Just some FYI, the programming cable is basically just an android phone charging cable. So, you can get a longer cable for programming if you desire/need to. Since I use mine as a base station (using the SEC 1235M power supply aswell) I have a longer cable and leave it in my PC and radio all the time.

Just purchased this radio setup recently as my first "real" HAM rig, vs my previous uV-5R. Currently using the D578-UVIII Pro for my "Base" station while I work on my Code Plug and get things tweaked. It's a nice rig and thus far, I've been very happy. I've even been able to make my first overseas contact via DMR; pretty cool! I may keep this as a base and get a twin for the truck so I don't have to switch them back/forth. The CPS is pretty good; but it does have a few quirks - wish Anytone would make it so you can move/copy frequencies in bulk and open various code plugs at the same time to make it easy to copy and paste from one variant into another. Looking forward to growing more in this hobby and stepping up to General and AE levels in the near future.

I am putting my time to good use, (I am on paid furlough.) I am studying for my Amateur Extra ticket. The test is next month. Regarding 220, no one in NW Florida is using it at all. I also heard that you can take the Anytone 578 Pro Dual Band Commercial unit, (the one I own,) and convert it so that it can use the 220 frequency. the one I have, can be converted to tri-band. Have you heard anything about this? 73's / Steve / K4SRF

It is a shame that more Hams are not using the 1.25 meter band, I really cannot understand why. and I agree with TimBo, we had better start using it or Commercial interests will grab it fast. I have a 1.25 meter Bridgecom Repeater 260 feet behind my house on the very top of the hill. It belongs to another Ham friend, and we have made contacts easily from this location in Central MA to Boston to the East, and Mt.Tom to the West. It is not crowded, and propagation will surprise many Hams. I love that new radio Dave, it is on my wish list for sure. And thank you Dave for taking the time for these daily videos, believe me, we all look forward to them every day during this lock-down.

I replace the mounting screws with thumb screws. Easy for adjustment and fitting. Saves a lot of fiddling about with screw drivers..

Timely video for me as I just ordered this radio a couple of days ago to upgrade the baofeng in my car. The baofeng also has 1.25m and I have several HT tri-banders as well. I also want to start playing with DMR and hotspots.

Are you saying you have a tri-band mobile Baofeng radio?
@davecasler4 жыл бұрын
The only Chinese mobile I have is the D578
@Chris-in-ky-ky4ckp4 жыл бұрын
Yep, the baofeng uv25x4. Technically quad band but here in the US we only have allocation for 3 of them.

Hi, I am totally new to HAM radio. I am studying for my Technician license. With the Corona Virus Pandemic, I am finding no clubs in my area conducting the tests. Are you finding this issue in your area as well?
@davecasler4 жыл бұрын
Yes, our club just cancelled their upcoming VE session. I suspect this is a problem nationwide.

Why is 220Mhz band only set at 5 watts maximum on most of the tri-band radios while the other bands go to 40-50 watts? Vic KA7SON

I suspect marketing wanted it, but engineering could only squeeze in a five watt PA before release.

Great review David! This looks to be a solid radio, but in my honest opinion it is overpriced by $150. I could get the Yaesu FTM-100DR at dxengineering for just under $300. I am somewhat stumped on why Anytone limited the 1.25m band to max of 5 watts.
@davecasler4 жыл бұрын
I don't think the intent was to limit it so much as marketing insisted on 220 and the engineers were able to squeeze only so much in.
