We were in Italy last Fall and I completely agree with all that you say. We frequently ate at small places that did not have an English language menu, but there was never a problem even with our extremely limited Italian vocabulary. I really love your enthusiasm.

I do want to say that in Japan it is the norm to have samples of the food in the window, so I wouldn’t worry about eating in that Japanese restaurant in your video. That would be fine for that cuisine, but no other.

Thanks for the informative video! Going to Italy this summer and I'm so excited! Also, FYI: The plastic plates of food in the window are totally normal for Japanese restaurants to do. It's an art form in Japan, called 'sampuru', and many restaurants in Japan have it in some form! Even small family owned places in a town that no tourists go to. In my six months living in Japan, whether or not the restaurant had this in the window had no impact on the quality of the food. It's to show off how good the food looks, and culturally to Japanese folks, it's very appealing. The first set of plastic food you showed in your video was also Japanese, so that's why they have it most likely. I'll steer clear of it at Italian places though! No plastic pizza for me, please!

Not the most fun subject, but when I walk the streets of Rome I just cannot help but to feel terrible for people who are eating at obvious tourist traps where I know food is going to be less than average but the prices are going to be sky high. Truly hope that this video will change things. Please share it with anyone who is planning a trip to Italy or Europe in general.

Look for trattoria, osteria, and the best....agriturismo. If you are a true adventurer then the agriturismo is the way to go. You can go online and book a stay or check if there are any local agriturismo where you are visiting and get a reservation for dinner. The food is almost always outstanding.

Have a trip coming up to Italy and it will be the first time for me coming from the US to Europe. It seems, much to my chagrin, that the common theme for traveling in Italy to the touristy places are scams, pickpockets and the dangers of certain trains/travel. It's quite unfortunate and a bit disconcerting I must say.
@tinalettieri
@tinalettieri Жыл бұрын
I'm a 76 year old woman alone. I feel perfectly safe on trains etc and even in the streets. Just guard your purse and be street smart. Use a cross body bag and since Italian men carry bags of some sort, if you are one, you can get a manly bag and carry it cross body too. Do not put your money and passport in a backpack unless you have a little lock on that compartment. Of course touristy places are scams. That's not unique to Italy. It happens in NYC and Disney World too.

I think occasionally breaking the rules can result in a decent meal. A few years ago I was walking down the Corso Umberto in Taormina and all the restaurants on the strip were full of tourists. My family and I wanted to pick a random side street and see if we could find an uncrowded restaurant. We hadn’t walked far when we found a place at the end of the road. There was someone out there inviting us in. It was hot and we were tired and we were ready to scrap the rules. We ended up pleasantly surprised. The restaurant has the most beautiful garden dining and the food, while not the best meal I ever had, was delicious. We tourists were glad we were trapped. We are a foodie family, so our standards are pretty high.

It's very simple. If there's a server outside encouraging you to come in and a menu in several languages on a little podium. LEAVE! The food will be awful and the prices exorbitant. Go to places with Italian only menus and use the translator on your phone. Service is relaxed. You will be given plenty of time to make your choice. You're not expected to order within 30 seconds of sitting down. I eat and speak Italian so this is not a problem for me. I have never been scammed in an Italian restaurant. Oh yeah, I forgot, the poster pictures of the dishes are a dead giveaway. Leave!

Very true. A few additions: In my experience, most food in Italy is good to very good. There aren't that many bad places. Generally, if a place looks good, it probably is. The first time I was in Italy in 1977, we were poor. So Italy in my mind doesn't really associate with food. The best we could afford was the cheapest kind of pizza in the cheapest trattorias. Which had a great positive side to it. Walking around looking at monuments and other things on an empty or semi-empty stomach is so much better. You perceive everything so much more clearly. And a meal (not too heavy) after such a walk tastes wonderful. With all the walking, I would get pretty seriously hungry by 7 pm. Which meant I was often the first customer of the evening. Well, I don't mind. The food is just as good. I've never seen menus with multiple languages under multiple flags. Maybe because if I see high prices, I don't go there. Not quite "the later the better." At 12 or so everything closes. If you are hungry at 2 am -- tough luck. I am not aware of any 24-hour places, that's very much an American thing. Plates of fake flood on display are Japanese. If you are craving Japanese food in Italy, go ahead and have it. I've had one Chinese restaurant meal in Italy (because there was nothing else in that area), and it was pretty bad. American Chinese restaurants are much better. Don't know about Japanese restaurants in Italy. But in America fake food on display in a Japanese restaurant is a pretty good sign. Italian fake food on display -- that's another story.

we encountered another scam in Trastavere, at a restaurant with gluten free pasta and pizza. While waiting for a table, we noticed a table of young American tourists who seemed to have a problem with the details of their bill, but didn't take all that much notice. After our meal, I thought the total seemed high, so checked the items on the bill. It was out by more than 20 euros. The waiter was not in the least embarrassed when I pointed it out, suggesting that he was sure we had intended to leave him a tip. The total should have been around 80 euros. I think this was a well practised routine by this person. We were quite shocked.

That's terrible but Americans can't seem to get that you do not tip in Italy. That's what "servizio" or "coperto" on the bill means. So, I guess the young ones have come to expect a tip from the Americans.

Does your phone have a translator? You will not be expected to order within 30 seconds of sitting. learn the categories while flying then when you get a menu, if you want fish go to "pesce" and if you want meat, "carne" then take out your translation app and have at it. You know how to read pasta and pizza already.

Lol you said don't walk Rome Termini at night but you said most restaurants don't open until the sun goes down. Especially in Fall and winter. Will we be safe enough?😊

1. Times for pranzo and cena are earlier in northern Italy. 2. Never go for a restaurant with a "Menù Turistico". Obvious. 3. Don't look for a restaurant with 54 different dishes! 4. Once when visiting Genova, we encountered a sign which said "Cucina Regionale". We followed it. Don't do that! It's not at all what you think.

It's true everywhere about restaurants near major attractions. Sometimes you just have to walk a couple of streets over and you'll find a hidden gem of a restaurant that will blow your mind away. Happened to us twice in Paris. Back in 2007 we found this nice little spot in the 7è arrondissement, food was excellent and service was super. This year, in July, we found this Japanese restaurant, a hole in the wall, really that served off the hook dishes. You just have to look for them, and that's what we'll do when we go to Italy. I guess I can live with having a late lunch, but I'll have to have a snack at the time we usually have dinner here, around 6 and check my blood sugar (I'm type 1 diabetic) so I can tough it out until 8 for dinner. Bonjour! Hi! from Montreal, QC Canada. Oh, btw, I just smacked the "like" and "Subscribe" buttons. 😁 Getting used to your vibe the more I watch your videos, it's pretty nice, although I did not expect you falling backwards on your sofa, and neither did you, I think!

Well I enjoy scamming the scammer 😃 when one of those men outside the restaurant invites me in and I need the il bagno, I tell them I have already eaten, but would love to look inside for next time, and then once inside I ask if I could use their il bagno, then afterwards I say thank you and never return again, it works very well for me 😂

lolll yes whenever i go abroad...i spend my calories on high quality things like ...protein ..i dont even eat pasta...i can make that at home easily. i go for things i wont find easily in the uk or food i cant make..the only high cab foods ill induldge in in italy are pizza, lasagna, gelatto and other deserts ;) so your advice was perfection 😁 nothing makes me cringe so hard when we go to very high quality restaurant and people just munching away at the bread instead of having patience

I do have the question about restaurants in Rome. There are like you said lots of restaurants that wave you in. The people stand out front and try to get you to go in. In my opinion one of them was very very good. Do you recommend staying away from every single one of them that has somebody outside trying to show for you in?
@StayFabulousTL
@StayFabulousTL 2 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily. This is the rule that works majority of the times but of course there are exceptions. I know a very good trattoria in Rome and they do have someone who calls people in.

@@StayFabulousTL Anastasia, I think if someone is new to the country, doesn't know the culture or language, it's best not to take a chance because most of them are at best overpriced and of poor quality, if not outright scammers. Many years ago, we landed in Milano and wanted to go to Lago Maggiore. I started negotiating with the cab drivers. My new husband didn't know a word of Italian. The first guy in queue tried to charge me a whole lot. I had researched it even before the internet. This was the further out airport, I always get them confused but we weren't that far from Maggiore. The guy tried to tell me we had to go around Como and blah, blah. I sort of joked with him and told him he was crazy and exactly what route to take. One of the other drivers jumped in and agreed with me. That changed the first guy's mind in a hurry. Then it was all "Ok, I was thinking you said Garda" or some such nonsense and more blah, blah but we got to Stresa for a reasonable price and many auguri for the newlyweds.
