i don’t know why but ashley does not give herself credit - she’s a brilliant mc, she’s a talented singer and amazing cohost of her real and interesting youtuber, meticulous and detailed video editor. Like to be able to multitask all these jobs and have the transferable skills to be able to do them is so inspiring so she really need to give herself credit when it is due. I think this paragraph may come off as aggressive but i wish ashley could understand how inspiring she is a woman even though she may not see it in herself.

no fr she does SO MUCH, esp (not to compare but to give perspective) when so many other former idols haven’t been able to bounce back after leaving unless they were foreigners who went back to their country & built their businesses there. the fact that she has a really stable career in entertainment and last year was her official year of making her own name after LC disbanded (nonetheless, in a pandemic LOL), she’s done so well and will only be continuing to do well. genuinely, she’s built this fanbase that isn’t determined by how well she performs; but just by being herself and talking out her thoughts, and that means more than the fickleness of typical idols fans that usually grow out of their faves. of course, people do really want her to return back to music, but at the same time, it’s her pace, which has so much more value than doing what’s trendy.

@19:25 I’m not sure if Korean idols are aware , but a lot of fans have “comfort idols” . It’s basically idols who make us feel better with their music/lives (basically content) or they give you that “hey imma listen to ur problems and give you advice “ vibez. BM has been my comfort idol for so long , even before Get real 😭 i just hope he knows a lot of ppl appreciate his warm nature and easy going personality .

You described it so perfectly! I have a few comfort idols and this podcast is a comfortable space for me too. These idols who constantly lift us up, give us advice, and genuinely spread love are the best. BTS are my comfort idols because they make me feel like I'm not alone and they're the type of group that's like, "Hey, I know you're having a hard time right now. Let me cheer you up and make sure to hug you through my music." It's so beautiful that these idols can make such a comfortable and safe place for people online and concerts as well. I also appreciate BM's warm nature and easy going personality a lot. He's someone who really lifts me up and makes me happy with his energy! I hope I can meet both him and BTS to tell them how much they really helped me get through tough times :)

BM is that positive homie we all need haha. As an Asian-American growing up (well I"m a '93 baby so my generation at least) the only mainstream artist we had representing us was like William Hung. And he was famous for all the wrong reasons (cuz he fit all the stereotypes). It's why I moved on to Japanese and Korean music by age 11. So when I student taught first grade like two years ago, all my South East Asian students one day were saying to each other "You like BTS? I like BTS too!" That's why I got nothing but respect for what BTS has accomplished. You can pursue creative arts my younglings haha.

Honestly, I think the fact that people tend to lean more towards Korean artists is because they show who they really are. Not only through their music, but their v lives, RUN episodes of BTS, interviews, and podcasts like this. It's so refreshing to see them being human and being super goofy. That's actually why I can't relate to Western artists as much because they're always so mysterious. I only know these artists through their music. However, Korean artists are so different. I love seeing all these goofy and funny sides to them. That's why I enjoy this podcast as well. I love BM's personality so much because he's so open and hilarious. Ashley is so sweet and so goofy too. Peniel is absolutely hilarious while being very wise. It's a nice feeling and it makes me feel more connected to them as people :)

RE: the question about Asian artists in America, the ones they mentioned(Joji, Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak) are the big ones. On the female side, H.E.R. is up there. She's not American, but British artist Rina Sawayama is building up a fanbase in the west. There's actually quite a few on the indie side, most notably Mitski and Japanese Breakfast(I would LOVE if Michelle came on Get Real one day). I'm still mad that Utada Hikaru never really took off in America like she did in Japan. I still have hope that it will happen for her one day.

Yet, I may be commenting on something similar to their content---I don't mean any offense. What I wanted to comment on was how the racial ambiguity of mixed race Asian Americans may make it more difficult for many consumers to racially stereotype them in the same way that monoracial Asian Americans are often stereotyped. This may help to explain why the most famous Asian Am musicians tend to be mixed race rather than monoracial. Also, those "non-mixed" Asian artists who have found huge success in the U.S. are usually foreign (rather than U.S.-born & raised) artists, which enables groups/artists like Psy, BTS & Blackpink to conform to the longstanding and popular U.S. stereotype of Asians as perpetual foreigners - these artists more easily conform to the expectations of mainstream American audiences more so than an artist like Tiffany Young, whose American upbringing and accent-less speaking cause cognitive dissonance for those who have a hard time seeing Asians in America as anything but perpetual foreigners.

I think one of the best parts of Get Real is how the focus is always on growth of character, and uplifting others. Positivity and being wholesome is something, that doesn't often get the spotlight, but you guys are showing, that having good manners and just being nice can be cool.
