A good idea is to fasten the front door seatbelts through the inside handle and then into the fastener. Doors can’t be opened as easy from outside incase someone trys.

Hi Jill. Thanks. Good suggestion. Never tried that. My concern could be feeling trapped/or being delayed in an emergency, although I’d still have the side door if I needed to exit. Increased van door security is already something high on my priorities though. Thanks for the tip 👍🏻

I reckon a ridgemonkey pan would make a good clonker too! I, of course have form with this. It was a plastic saucepan and I was 5 and my poor sister was 7. I know how to clonk! She’s never forgotten! 🤣🙈 I’m the same as you for many things. Only thing which worries me wild camping is my dog wanting a wee in the middle of the night. Can I just say, and not meaning to upset you, that your tribute plaque for Bri is lovely. Made my eyes leak. ❤️🤗

Ah thank you, that doesn’t upset me at all. I look at the plaque every night before lights out and first thing every morning when out in the van. I feel he’s with me always 🙂. Your poor sister … but thanks for the tip haha. Obviously I’m not condoning clonking 😂

I think out possible uses for the everyday items in the van too and keep them easily to hand because although we can’t carry weapons with intent, we can use “reasonable force” to protect ourselves and there are plenty of things to help us with that.

I’ve just done NC 500 in a hire van mostly off grid / wild camping and as a solo female newbie I used all the knowledge I’d gained from your channel and others like Getaway Geese. I would never have done it without seeing you do it first so keep up the good work I’m sure I’m not the only one gaining confidence by following your example. “There is strength in numbers “ we only park on sites , I would rather pay and be safe and secure. But, having said that I don’t feel comfortable too close to forests or woods. When you parked up iN that isolated place where the wild goats are in Scotland , no way would I camp there , not because of people attacking but I find it too eerie. We always try to scope a park up out in daylight and then go back to it later if possible. We don't like turning up somewhere in the dark. Some useful tips there Sue, not just for solo travellers. Gut instinct is the best. We have turned up to planned places that have been recommended on P4N but then we have turned up and it hasn't felt right. xx

Hi Sue. All great sensible advice and lots of good points I had not thought of. The name on your hotspot a good example. Just about to pick up my first van and aim to do 50/50 campsite to wild camping especially in Scotland as a solo male traveller. Whilst I completely agree travelling as a solo female may seem more concerning, all your advice has been taken onboard as all the issues you touch on have put me off in the past contemplating wild camping. I am now about to take the plunge as you put solo travelling into perspective as a safe and enjoyable pastime with a few safeguards put in place. I used to wild camp a lot and only had 2 worrying occasions... both were scary at the time, but it transpires I wasn't actually under threat as such... one time I inadvertently parked in a place where people "meet up" let's say. At night. To meet other like minded people. It was quite chilling at the time. Bizarrely, since having my dog we haven't wild camped... we only been on sites. He isn't prepared to rough it! Good point, about fuel. We never have less than half a tank of diesel, in the van.. Talking about moving from a dodgy location.....the times we have moved from a place that turned out to be dodgy....As you say....if the red flag goes up, move first, as last... Fabulous Common sense. Something I do is share my location on Google maps with my daughters. They then know where I am at all times. And of course I have my trusty companion Bella. She always lets me know if something is not right... Great video. Happy camping 🥰

Not a good idea to have “weapons” of any sort in a van but I used to keep a can of Raljex in the cupboard above the sliding door. I did suffer from cramp so it was needed and it smelt dreadful if accidentally sprayed on clothes. You have to be very careful not to get it near to eyes as it can cause temporary blindness. Another trick is to record a large dog barking on your phone and play it back repeatedly as needed.

Some really sound advice Sue. We both think you are a star going to all the places you go and we keep saying we must try wild camping. I have been a bit nervous about wild camping given some of the problems folks have had where vans aren’t welcome. I try and avoid hassle as get enough of that at work in the week 😂 I would love to try it but want to get an outstanding job of CCTV fitted first for that extra peace of mind. Some great tips and advice, hopefully soon we will brave it as we are inspired at the beautiful places you visit. But when it comes down to it Scotland calls you. Those Swans on the gentle sea waters at Arran are beauty personified.

Hiya Sue - very useful vlog and you're totally right to say that it's not just females that will feel nervous - I'm not ready to go out yet, but I know that when my car/van is ready I am going to be terrified, Just like you though, my mantra since Patrick died has been "the worst thing that could happen to me has happened and so I can cope with anything less than that." All the safety tips were very useful - my router at home and my bluetooth name is a version of 'PSNI Car 3' (Police Service of Northern Ireland) to hopefully keep naughty people at bay...mind you if I were as lucky as you clearly are to have a manic xylophone player secured under the bed I would fear naught! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Wishing you a lovely weekend. I 100% agree with all what you say and I often repeat to others when asked about living and parking in a van, all the points you made are for everyone and not just women and yes you made that point at the end lol, ALWAYS when parked up face the way you need to drive just incase you need to move quickly, remember the phone will use more power if the signal is not very good, also iv seen ppl put screen cover on when parked in a lay-by, if you need to get a way quick the last thing you need to do is get them off, I know iv repeated some of what you said so sorry about that and yes imagination is big thing when first starting out in the van... it even kept me awake when I first started...LOL

Great advice. I always think about Getaway Geese when they started wild camping, I think it’s Stu! He was so anxious at first and now they go all over and are so confident. I know it sounds ridiculous but I’m not even sure I would feel, confident to camp in a campsite on my own. I think it’s more about driving, parking and setting up the bigger van. My three little delinquent dogs are also a bit of a handful 😂. I’ve finally booked a campsite for next week so I can test out my new van to make sure everything is working OK. I’ve dragged my feet a bit because I lost my mum and then I lost my dad just 8 weeks later and everything has been in a bit of a spin but I think just this week I’m feeling a bit better so I made the effort and booked the campsite, I’m feeling quite excited. I had to do it because next month we’re going to Poshcats rally and then in June it’s Hermanfest so lots to look forward to. Thanks for sharing another great video, I always enjoy seeing what you’ve been up to.
