One thing I've learned from my personal use of Glidecams and 3 axis gimbals is that the gimbals require, for buttery smooth operation, a camera with IBIS or lens with IS. Without it there's quite a lot of shake and vibrations in footage. With the glidecams you can use any lens and you will still get buttery smooth footage (operator must be skilled of course).
@VideoUpskill7 жыл бұрын
That's a really good observation, I agree 100%. I follow Brandon Li and a lot of his cool gimbal setup lenses are stabilized or IBIS. I bought the stabilised primes to really experiment. Unless the lens is hugely wide todays gimbals do work much better with IS on lens or body. Haha now I miss my glidecam a bit.
@ThePxr017 жыл бұрын
Hi Jorge, exactly matches my personal experience. A lot of people get caught out with this one. I found the footage using the voitlander on my gh4 (fully manual lens) a bit jittery when used on the 3-axis gimbal yet it is unexpectedly smooth using a glidecam
@VideoUpskill7 жыл бұрын
Yep and I'm looking forward to seeing what the 4 and 5 axis gimbals of the future will hold.
@shriramrabinthiran74877 жыл бұрын
Hmm I don't know guys. I have the gh4 which has no image stabilisation and I recently switched from the glidecam hd2000 to the zhiyun crane. I'm getting smoothness as good as what I was getting on the glidecam- it's awesome! The biggest factor for me is focal length. With my 10mm samyang lens combined with the DEC LensRegain, it's an awesome combination!

I own both and would have to say that with your first setup you don't have to switch out lenses and cameras for events when trying to go between long and wide. I like the zhiyun but I see the y axis jitters a lot and it's mechanical in some movements using the joystick. Super easy setup though and compact.
@VideoUpskill6 жыл бұрын
Hunter Jackson True really good points. At the moment I have a backpack where I fit the Zhiyun with A6300 10-18 IS lens attached for super styled moving shots. Then in the front part of the backpack I have my Sony A7s with 24-105 and 70-200 for better quality shooting and audio work. Overall I really enjoy shooting with modern small camera setups 😊

I used to have a glide cam but it got stolen on a gig. There is a very large learning curve with just being able to set it up to be balanced. And as soon as you change your lens the entire balance gets thrown off... or even if you just flip open your lcd screen... it will have to be re-balanced. Honestly it was a pain to use.
@VideoUpskill4 жыл бұрын
Yes I totally understand, for practical use gimbals are super helpful and what I use these days. The only time I can think I want to use a steadicam these days is if I want a specific look to the camera movement for an advertisement or film.

Great video! Recently switched to the zhiyun from a glidecam. One of the other benefits of the glidecam is that it's a completely mechanical system. Recently went on a trip to Sudan and we got caught up in some strong winds during a desert trip. It meant that I couldn't use the zhiyun as I was fearful that sand would get into the motors and ruin the gimbal. The glidecam, you can beat up with no concerns about functionality in future! Also no need to worry about batteries being charged and so on with the glidecam. But all in all, the zhiyun and the likes are complete gamechangers. Takes the skills of the operator pretty much out the equation and does the hard work for you!

+Shriram Rabinthiran Spot on mate, totally agree. I went out to a shoot and saw it was raining lightly and I thought, I would have flown a glidecam no problem but the Zhiyun not risking it. Zhiyun/gimbals make filmmaking lots of fun.

Video Upskill totally true about the weather conditions making it harder to use a gimbal. then again on a non weather sealed camera I don't see the difference on the weather if your cam will be in it anyhow. main reason I'll be having both gimbal and glide cam for those days I don't want to risk breaking the gimbal. I film park skiers and snowboarders so I'm in the snow all the time. best of both worlds use the gimbal on nice Days, use a weather cover and glide cam on crummy days. I wonder if there's a way to slip something over the motors to keep it from getting moisture in. almost like an elastic band around the open slits
@VideoUpskill6 жыл бұрын
That's a neat idea, I'm sure weather proofed gimbals are just around the corner the way technology is moving, sounds like you've got a great system. I am really enjoying the Zhiyun still after all these shoots.

I just bought the AFI gimbal, and with that a quick release plate. That way I can release the camera to use it freely from the gimbal and I don't have to balance it again once I put it back, and the other thing is that the screen will be a little bit higher, and I will be able to see it better
@VideoUpskill7 жыл бұрын
Percy Duran That's an awesome idea thank you for sharing, what quick release plate do you use?
@PercyDeSaint7 жыл бұрын
I bought this one, however it has a screw at the botton (you can see it right next to the golden release), that depending of the camera may interfere as it is not flat. I use the A7SII, so far I haven't had a problem with that because it stays outside of the base of the gimbal, in combination with the plate that comes with it. It works for me, but I would recommend to buy something completely flat www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00G7IRCLE/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s04?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Looks like your camera weighs around 500g without a lens so I would suggest a Crane v1 or v2 or plus but not the Crane 2 as Crane 2 is mainly designed for heavier cameras and not Crane M because it's designed for tiny point and shoot style cameras with a max payload of 600g. I just bought a Crane v2 for my A6300 and a7s.

Great question, I have sold my glidecam now, I would say if you are going to go super lightweight like an a6000 then it may be under the minimum weight limit of the Liang steadicam (there are only so many weights you can take off). Maybe go for a smaller steadicam Yelangu s60t. You can always change your mind and sell it later if it's not suitable for your setup, I made a video about this topic kzbin.info/www/bejne/nXe6kox9bcxrp9U

Try EC1, you will have another thought in your mind! Zhiyun Crane is just 1 gimbal. There're many kinds of them.

That's true, although I think the EC1 needs you to use some PID software to set it up and I heard the Zhiyun didn't need that and it's ready to go so I bought that as a first gimbal but yes you are right, lots of different tools available which is great for us.

@VideoUpskill7 жыл бұрын
Activate Halo Yep for sure, A7s doesn't have lightning fast as the a6500 etc but it's totally helpful for being confident the centre part is in focus after around 1 second and for situations where you are recording and don't want to pull focus which could mess up the shot. I have a setup for center frame push activation auto focus, it's come in handy. Maybe I should make a video explaining this handy feature and to use it.

I put on a rode videomicro on my gh4 on my gimbal. Realized its top heavy. Although its still doable, once you turn it off it becomes a catapult. Can you try it out on a steadicam and see if you have problems?
@VideoUpskill7 жыл бұрын
dizkoteck I can see the balance would be out on a gimbal. I have put the rode video mic pro on my a7s on my glidecam and it has flown fine as the design of the glidecam is quite different with all the weights at the bottom. I have sold my one but I'm pretty sure it's all good as I have also flown my FS100 on it and that thing is very heavy so I had to add more weights to the base sled. The more weight you have on a steadycam style unit the more it will be resistant to subtle bumps or user error making for a smoother but heavy operation.

Can i use a mirorrless in a glide cam?
@VideoUpskill7 жыл бұрын
+Leonardo Oliva Glidecams come in different sizes, sometimes you can't take enough weight off the base of the sled to match the lightness of the camera which means it could be sway around and always be unbalanced. I also think glidecams benifit with slightly heavier dslrs, which means with a light bump even then they would be stable. If you would like a steadycam with a mirrorless camera I would suggest looking any mention of a minimum payload (your camera must be x heavy) or try buying a smaller size steadycam and if it doesn't work then sell it.

Video Upskill i have a question and it might take you a while to answer. I just bought a canon hf r80 with no mic connection anywhere on it. I also bought a mic and a trip pod. I want a light to go along with it. I also want a glide cam. (I want a lot of things) Been researching trying to fin the set up. Now take into consideration that i have already bought two of those things and I just want the glide cam. With no place to mount a mic, I was looking at either a rail or L-bracket. In other words I bought the wrong camera but im still trying to build a rig. LOL what do you think.
@robertmason75537 жыл бұрын
When I say connection I mean no place to place one. I know it has the mic input but there is no place to mount one.
@VideoUpskill7 жыл бұрын
+redman masonji That's a true balancing act! Lol yes I see. Good thing is glide cams usually have a large surface on the top so I would go for rails and a magic arm to position the mic roughly above the camera to help keep consistent balance. A lighter and handy option may be a Manfrotto quick release plate (the long sliding one that have 1/4 inch tripod style mounting points) so it's easy to connect a magic arm to the quick release plate and mount the mic to the magic arm. Magic arms are so handy I may do a video on them
@robertmason75537 жыл бұрын
So are you saying it will work?????
@VideoUpskill7 жыл бұрын
Sorry without trying I can't check everything will balance, it was just a mounting idea, traditionally I have always flown without accessories as it's mostly for short highlights shots. Maybe have a look at your total rig weight and look at the different glide cams and what their minimum and maximum payloads are. Sorry I can't give a clear answer.

Thanks for your question, Zhiyun crane you will be able to do complex camera moves easily/quickly and you will enjoy it. Flycam you will spend more time learning how to use the tool and you are limited in the style of movements for example you can't easily do the move at 2:37 with a flycam. The benefit is the Flycam is cheaper. Both do a great job but I recommend the Zhiyun. I Have a canon hf r 80 at .51 lbs. Now with all of the accessories I ordered for it, will that come into play as far as balancing. Says that this is hard to balance at .44 pounds. if you get my drift.
@VideoUpskill7 жыл бұрын
+redman masonji Yeah I see what you mean, careful placement of accessories is important, the good thing is that your setup is quite light so the neutral way to add center weight would be to put a quick release plate underneath the camera on the crane for example. I have had a situation where I wanted to use a wireless mic and small monitor and have found using a small magic arm can allow you to use accessories without throwing out the balance. I may make a video on using a magic arm on the Crane to use accessories whilst gimbal shooting. If you need more weight, I think I even saw someone mount a battery power brick somewhere too.

I have been using Glidecam HD 2000 with Canon D700 with 10-18mm Lens (wide angle) since last 2 ~3 years and have good amount of understanding of drop-time, balancing etc. My question is: Despite of lot of practice over the years, I am getting disappointed by feet jurk coming in the raw footage. I would like to understand is there anyway I can supress the feet movement (slight up-down) in raw footage without using any post processing software. Kindly guide. AG from Singapore
@VideoUpskill7 жыл бұрын
Your setup sounds good. I can maybe suggest 2 points. 1. Glidecams work the best when you "ninja walk" bend your knees at all times when you walk to absorb the bounce and keep your arm comfortably bent. 2. The setup may be a bit on the light side. I know if I fly a very light camera on a glidecam, any subtle movement causes it to shake obviously, however if I fly my heavy setup like a FS100 everything looks very smooth and slow moving but pretty soon my arm can't hold it for long. Perhaps add weight to the top of the camera hot shoe, it can be any item and try these too suggestions.
@aegclass7 жыл бұрын
Really appreciate your quick response. Another question. If I buy 3 Axis Gimble then "footsteps" suppression during the shot is achievable?
@VideoUpskill7 жыл бұрын
Glidecam is better for footstep suppression because of the flexible handle design. I would say footsteps are even more obvious on the 3 axis gimbal because there is no stabilisation on our up/down motion, wide lenses and IS do help a lot also as you already know. I briefly mention the idea at 2:01. I think it comes down to walking with the knees bent and keeping you arm soft but at the same height as best you can.

Steadicam - Relatively cheap - More pratice required - Get a 2nd one for backup or 2nd camera or loss etc. Gimbal - Relatively expensive - Easier to use - More Flexibility - Better take care of it if you get one! 🤓

it's a glidecam, not a steadicam*

glide cams are better and cost less

I find glide cams are good because they cost less and you can still get awesome results, the zhiyun crane is so simple to get professional results easily that I find I can work faster and pack much lighter and get great shots more consistently. Both are awesome and more manufacturers and technology will get cheaper which means great news for us filmmakers :)

$550 is not my idea of "affordable"

I think the Zhiyun Crane was the first affordable quality gimbal when compared to the days when the only option we had was this original 3 axis stabilizer amzn.to/2Drv0kG

Gimbal is the best

I have to agree

Non c'è confronto. Sono un operatore steadicam professionista, e anche queste piccolette rendono benissimo, il problema è che non sanno bilanciarle, non sanno come si fa un bilanciamento dinamico e preferiscono vincere facile col gimbal.

I just bought gimbal and footage is super stable, but I don't like it it is very unnatural and robotic...

Great work, welcome to the world of stabilizers :)

Video Upskill thanks. Just managed to get everything balanced, but my steadycam always leans to one side. I can't get it to level. I wonder what the problem is.
@VideoUpskill7 жыл бұрын
+Kon Chatzi It's tricky to say what the issue is without using your steadycam model. I'm assuming you have already adjusted the left right baseplate adjustment. There are plenty of handy steadycam balancing tutorials on KZbin to get an idea. Perhapse try changing lens or camera combinations to make sure you aren't too far over or under the weight recommendations (I'm sure it should be fine). Or try looking on KZbin for some people using the same model steadycam as you have and see if they have specific tips.

Video Upskill Video Upskill not quite sure what is going on but I have sort of concluded there may be a manufacturing fault. The camera is balanced, but leans to the same side regardless of camera position or orientation. I might just buy a gymbal stabiliser.

+Kon Chatzi I see, maybe have a look for a second hand Zhiyun Crane since v2 and 2 is out. They are truly a reliable stabilizer.

Get dji ronin m way better. Glide cam is shit
@VideoUpskill7 жыл бұрын
+calisthenics 585 Ronin m is awesome, I would say more stable than a Zhiyun crane, The Zhiyun's portability and value is awesome, I can easily pack it in my backpack, camera attached and pull it out and shoot very fast.
