Slight correction. You can't sell your blood here in the US, but you can sell your plasma. Whole blood has to be donated and goes to hospitals. Plasma goes to pharmaceutical companies, and it tends to go to making medication for hemophiliacs, which is why you are allowed to profit. If you want to consider a process that pays about $25 for several hours of your day a profit.
@DavidJBradley4 жыл бұрын
Gonna have to claim English ignorance on that error. Medication being for profit is deeply upsetting.

I used to donate plasma twice a week to make rent. haven't donated in a few years and I still tell doctors that draw my blood what the mark is from so they don't jump to conclusions. I have to say it didn't occur to me that this didn't happen elsewhere.

So, wikipedia, but still "fun". Allegedly, the bodies Burke and Hare delivered were still warm sometimes, so obviously not snatched from a grave, and Knox engaged in deception so as to not allow for the probable recognition of a well known mendicant by his students through severing the poor man's hands and head before the main dissection. An interesting thing to read more about when I have time and stomach.

Fascinating and horrible stuff. I read a book years ago called Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers which was about what people decide to do with their bodies when the die. The book ends on a strange note where a man who wanted his body donated to science dies but his widow is reluctant to carry out his wishes because it's against her beliefs. The author tells her she should do whatever she feels is best and so she has him buried. And I remember getting so mad, like I get he's dead and can't get mad about it but it does feel extremely disrespectful to me.

I just remembered: according to Christian theology, the human body had to be buried intact in order to go to heaven intact. That was changed in the second half if the 20th century. .

Thank you for this really interesting video. The issue of stolen bodies on display was smth I mostly connected to the struggles of Indigenous Peoples throughout the world, but it was interesting to hear about this perspective that I’d not even thought about that much before! Also, there’s something very historically funny about “uniquely British problems that are not an issue in the rest of Europe” coming up... 🙈
@SebastianSeanCrow3 жыл бұрын
29:00 also on this guy there are modern day people with his same condition that have chosen to donate their bodies when they die, multiple people, so there’s not really even an excuse anymore to keep his body in the museum in any fashion.
