interesting. I added a feedback loop to the "1000w" version using a tl431 and a pc817 in a similar fashion to yours. I found that when the duty cycle was less than 49%, there was much ringing on the transformer and the fets got very hot. it's likely your transformer has enough stray inductance to avoid this problem, or your control loop is better.

Its a good desing but it needs snubber diods and a snubber network to keep back inductance from blowing up youre transistors like that. As for short protection try a few fets with there bace cenected to the positive of the output through some rrsistors soo if a short acures. This causes the output voltage to drop witch causes the fets to shut off.

Thanks for sharing. I watch many of your videos because you are one of the more knowledgeable DIYers on YT. The following is not meant as a criticism so bear with me on this. The gate wave forms are not good. the turn on is fast but the turn off is very very slow, almost 20uS. Why? This should not happen. Check the wave form of the input current. this can cause heating of the transistor die and hence transistor blows up. When one goes then all of them will go. Does the chip heat up after several minutes of use? If so then with those transistors perhaps you do need to add a gate driver. Imagine how it would work at 47KHz. I also noticed that the schematic says 47KHz but the wave forms period is about 63uS for both sides. the scope says 15.7KHz but that is for both edges so the frequency is around 8KHz. How does this work out for your primary side turns? At this frequency you need to have 15 Turns on each side. I think you are using 4 or 5 Turns, so you need to speed up the turn off in order to run at 47KHz. Secondly the SG3525 is a voltage mode controller and there is no mechanism for equalizing the Volt-seconds on each side of the transformer. The 3525 was made just before current mode control chips became available. If I want to make a low cost push-pull, I use a UC3842 chip (10 for $1) as the controller and apply its output to the 3525. Both chips are very cheap and with a little bit of additional circuitry you can make a reliable current mode controlled push-pull with current limiting and excellent voltage control. otherwise your transistors will blow up.
@Basement-Science
@Basement-Science 4 жыл бұрын
I think you are mostly right. Although if 6:55 shows a gate voltage, then that means the frequency 15.7kHz is the same as the output AC frequency since two such gate waveforms are necessary to create the entire AC wave. That is a very low frequency though. It might cause problems as well. I think you are correct that the very slow turn-off is a problem. It could even explain the strange exploding capacitor if both transistors were (partly) on at some point. Although I´m not sure which capacitor in the schematic it was that actually blew up. I don´t understand why this slow turn-off happens though. I would not call the SG3525 a very powerful gate driver, but apparently it can source and sink the same amount of current (absolute max +-500mA, steady state +-100mA). The combined 3,4 ohms of gate resistance per pair of mosfets is very low for that sort of gate driver though. Maybe the ic itself was already damaged from that? The peak gate drive current with those resistors could be as high as 4,4A for a short time.

10:40 I see few things wrong with this circuit. Gates resistors have too small values. SG3525 can only provide 400mA peak. No snubber network on the MOSFETs drains. Value of the 1k potentiometer is too small to limit the feedback current when zener diodes are conducting and finally there should be one extra ceramic low ESR capacitor near the source pins of the MOSFETs because electrolitic capacitor alone does not have low enough ESR to deal with sharp current spikes during transistor switching.
@vitsirucka6385
@vitsirucka6385 2 жыл бұрын
I built this circuit with a small transformer and a only 2 MOSFETs and it worked for loads under 100W. Today I upgraded it to 4 MOSFETs and bigger transformer, similar to the one in the video. Powered it on, lit a 40W bulb normally, tested for around 20s and BAM! Got the exact same pitch sound and exact same loudness bang from the same capacitor. I hope the capacitor didn't kill the IC or MOSFETs.

I think it can only (strictly) work with SMPS only. Obviously transformer based devices won't work.
@Basement-Science
@Basement-Science 4 жыл бұрын
There are problems with that as well. In an SMPS the input capacitor is normally charged to 325Vdc, but with this circuit it will only charge to 230Vdc. Depending on the rated input voltage, that could be a problem. Also, in its bridge rectifier, only 2 of its diodes will have to handle all the load. The other 2 will pass no current at all.

Great video , I’m just learning about these control chips , looking at the data sheet I’m not sure that the SG2535 has any advantage in the non use of a gate driver over the TL494. both IC claim 500MA~ source to sink Actually the TL494 claims 500Ma per transistor and the SG3525 states 400Ma peak per drive transistor. So I think they are both very similar it would come down to personal preference on something like that Those fake mosfets are the dumps I’m sure I have a bucket of them here, makes scavenging worth while in some aspects and Television sets {both old and new} all the more desirable. Edit looking at the block diagram of the SG3525 I can see that the gate drive has two NPN with the output from the bridge of these , traditionally that could allow for a nicer gate drive in terms of on time etc, so perhaps it is better from that point of view. However I’d be inclined to use a built gate driver anyhow so no great loss and probably not a huge difference at lower frequency. Great video
