One thing that a lot of producers dont talk about is most of the time the sample is what's swinging the beat. The drums are usually not crazy swung its just the sample that is making the beat swing so hard. If you stem out Dilla drums most of them aren't crazy swung. Minus a few execptions
@JayDAndre
@JayDAndre 3 ай бұрын
Yo Fam you are one of the first people ive heard say this! Everyone thinks they have to swing the drums something crazy everytime. Sometimes just by shifting the sample a bit you can reach the same outcome! Or even pitch stretching it to give it a different time feel! Great stuff homie! 💯🙌🏾

Bout time someone mentioned this! I'll also add that he often swings the bass to achieve the same effect- like you were saying, not necessarily the drums.

ay this was interesting asf 😂 I’ve been working w Boldy James recently; and we’re mastering some of the Drug Dilla work, and you was right on. Boldy rapped over Dilla’s last instrumentals, and plans on releasing this in the first quarter of 2024. Much love 🙏

The reason the drums are like that is because he played them by hand. They weren’t sequenced or programmed and then adjusted with swing or dragged out. They were played in time with his ear and feel. That’s why it’s so hard to replicate. It’s like trying to copy someone finger print or they’re signature.

Yo! so i jumped the gun a bit on the last reply more often than not J Dilla didn't quantize but in some of his later work you could hear it sometimes. so 100% true was definitely an overstatement lol. He didn't often use the swing feature on the MPC but he did have these tools at his disposal though and sure he got some use out of it. @@dragomirtsekov8077

no he used quantize. there was a tool in the mpc that allowed yu to nudge notes.
@margateswede
@margateswede Ай бұрын
If you think about it, the samples he flipped were not on a grid themselves. So using free hand and micro timing on the mpc to make things fit was what helped him develop his drum style. Once you use loop points and freehand you develop your own feel. No two live drummers play the same piece exactly the same. Dilla was a genius producer but it seems like half of his groove was the way he made things fit that felt right to him. That’s part of his personality. You can get close but I should imagine he would think that’s a strange thing to do. You can apply his workflows and studio tricks but its not going to bounce unless it comes from something that makes you feel good, that sounds right to you and makes you laugh out loud or get up out of your chair and move. Be your own favourite drummer.

Great points homie! Especially with his sample choices, it can be weird doing these emulation type videos trying to get a certain sound of a popular producer. In all honesty my main goal is just to peel back the curtain a bit and show a little bit on ways you might be able to get similar sounds in hopes people try and find their own way ya know! We learn by emulating our favorites and turning that into our own jam ya know! Thanks for engagin!

If you go to view in the piano roll time segments select beats and then drag the drum stem into the piano roll you can see exactly where the drum hits are (bonus tip make sure your time based settings is 96 ppq pulses per quarter note and use that finer grid resolution as a guide)

“It’s a whole thing, it’s hard to explain” Could you make a video about the whole thing and explain it… Little bit hard to follow if trying to re-produce this, feels like you’re onto something here, not quite wrapping my head around full concept. The fact the metronome syncs if you drag all the drums has me pondering

@@JayDAndre Do you even do the basics like play with the velocity of your drums? Or use different variations of the same snare instead of only using one? Layering rimshots/snaps/claps and snares? Also, what made you program drums in the playlist instead of the piano roll?

@DaveDEF82
@DaveDEF82 8 ай бұрын
@@JayDAndre If you play your drums you will automatically get different different velocity levels. For example think about your most basic hihat pattern with a hat being played on 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 (the + being the "and"). Usually the hats hitting on the "+" would be played with less force and therefore be less loud. These dynamics add to the timing aspect. He would also sample drums that were already layered or sample a two hihats sequence instead of one... Check Narokx breakdown of Players: Sample Breakdown: Slum Village - Players (Prod. By J Dilla). You can even see in the waveform that the second hihat in that sample is less loud than the first. He also sampled way more breaks than you would think seeing how you attributed that to Nujabes. Check Narokx's breakdowns. He has definitely some of the best insight. He even remade this Elzhi banger: Hardest Dilla Breakdown EVER [ Love it Here (The Look Track 5) ].
