Wow this might be one of my favorite videos by yours! I think Section.80 is one of Kendricks most underrated projects! Years ago i made an instrumental remake for Kush & Corinthians because it's also one of my favs on the album and there wasn't an instrumental on youtube yet. But one thing i wonder about, usually when making good, modern beats, it's all about having "hard knocking drums", or at least, drums that dont feel weak. But as you showed us with Section.80 they went for "weak" drums on purpose. This is a difficult sitatuion because if i make a beat with "weaker" drums to get that Section.80 feel, somebody might not like the beat because of the drums... Still, great video about this topic! Gonna listen to Section.80 again now

My thoughts are similar, as well. I was wondering if Navie might layer the kicks and snares with more modern boombap kicks and snares. But is that taking away from the original aesthetic? lol cheers!

Especially with the musical landscape today in hip hop. Everyone wants that vibey jumping trap sound with the Southside hi hat rolls unless youre Drake lol. I appreciate every beat on Section 80 personally. You have to like and enjoy real authentic hip hop to love these type of beats, weak drums or not imo

Plus Kendrick is the focal point because he's the artist that actually has a message along with the melody. Everything works together unlike alot of artists these days where the beat is the focal point because they are wack and generic.

This one made me subscribe because I learned some things I've never truly acknowledged before. I had no idea some songs even had samples because I assumed they were that simple. I remake many of them myself and I guess I haven't done enough research. I really appreciated when you pointed out the volume ratio between the drums and sample, noting that the drums were larger in the 90s than they were on Section 80. I've never thought about it that way and it's changed how I see much of music today. It taught me that a track can hit just as hard even if the drums are quieter than most of the ingredients, as long as they're all the perfect ingredients. Thanks for making this video! It's basically an 11 minute breakthrough.

Thank you Navi! I am stoked to know I realized this on my own, its cool to hear the idea from your perspective and have somone that is successful mirror what I felt made the difference. I have only had a controler for about a month and am still learning how it works... but I want to make my own tracks so I started trying. At first I was lost and thought like many I needed a bunch of plugins and fancy equipment. Then I watched a video on how Daft Punk made "one more time" and it was so beautifully simple I decided to try anyway. So first night I went for it, I made a remix of Gooey from Glass animals by speeding it up to 125bpm removing the bass layer. Taking a few loops from a house track that added the unique bass layer. Then using 2 different loops I mixed the levels till a clear balance was created. Let The sped up Gooey play and started and stoped the loops at the end of each 16 bar section to add and remove layers so the track builds to the break down, then builds back up till the outro. The way you explain it was exactly how I did it just kept listening to the balance and tried things till it was obvious. I totally agree if you dont need fancy plugins(all I used was a traktor s8) and no music theory experience. It is recorded and I can now remix this live in a set if I want to or play the recording as a track in my set. Hope your doing great. I subbed and liked the video and watched your 30 minute video in the description. 🕉🌌💓🎶✌

idk but what Kendrick do is actually simple. He rely mostly on 90 music, jazz, experimental soul, psychedelic/prog rock type beat, acid rock, etc. I have an idea, to everyone who wanna try hiphop/rap music, find a unique tune for example: japanese soul & jazz music, egyptian classic rock from 70-80's, psychedelic funk from eastern such as from middle east, asia, and more, or take a listen to my country music called dangdut (take the old one from 70-80's) or whatever u like. Just dont ever try any generic rap/trap bullshit. They totally sound same and boring. This formula has been used by artist like Kendrick, Kanye, The Weeknd (he just simply took Japanese city pop), Rich Brian, or the new Doja Cat song. Try this and see in 5 years! U'll be big because people think u're a new fresh air in hiphop/rap music scene while it's just u rapping to psychedelic soul beat. Peace!
