The thing about objects coming alive after a while is referring to a Japanese legend. Basically objects kept and cared for for a long time acquire souls and become a variety of yokai. You know the umbrella monster? That's one of them. The thing Mount Rokkon teaches you is basically the Japanese legend wholesale, without any Final Fantasy twist.

34:28 - In ARR, dungeon mobs actually did drop loot. I'm not sure why they stopped, but I think it was because the items which were dropped by dungeon mobs ended up oversaturated on the markets. Because Amdapor Keep's wolves dropped wolf fangs, wolf fangs on the market board were worth 6 gil. There probably could have been other solutions besides removing dungeon drops entirely, though (like reducing the drop rates).

Adding since I don't think you mentioned it, but the reason they changed it so that you don't get anything from killing trash mobs, is because back in the day people would only spam certain leveling dungeons up to a specific point, get their experience, and then drop out of the duty. It was a change to combat bad faith players, like how they changed ilvl requirements for crystal tower

The lore about very old objects acquiring souls is already introduced to the player in Stormblood. This is Susano's schtick: he's a valuable sword that's been around so long he's got himself a soul, and if you stuff enough aether into him he'll made a little body to hold it.

The idea of object gaining spirits is part of Japanese folklore. The Tsukumogami Emaki describes how an object would become occupied by a spirit after one hundred years, so people would throw out old objects before they became a hundred years old, which was called the "susu-harai".

Personally I hope that we get more race-specific variant dungeons! I.e something for the poor dang Duskwights or the Roegadyn's homelands? I also know we got the Blindfrost mentioned at the end of EW, so I imagine that's coming since everything else so far was accounted for!

34:47 once upon a time actually you got XP and tomestones from killing dungeon mobs. Patched out getting the tomes a while ago, and patched out XP from dungeon mobs with EW (which was a nerf to xp gain)

I thought it was changed to you getting all the XP from all the enemies at the end, which admittedly is still a loss since percent boosts are only done once as opposed to every mob. Never knew the tomestone one since I started a few months before EW.

@@GoldenAlphaOmni so i cant say about the tomestones per kill thing cause i started officially when SHB dropped. But all mobs in dungeons used to give EXP so usually when you loaded one up someone would be asking if its speedrun or full clear. ARR dungeons were made with the idea of full clearing so there's rooms where there's one or two enemies in them. Before EW dropped though, i wanna say sometime midway through SHB patches, they changed things so now EXP only comes from bosses in dungeons. killing extra mobs is meaningless now.

@@GoldenAlphaOmni XP gain pre EW was per mob AND boss. and yes, percentage boosts is what made mob XP so good. Another indirect nerf that flew underneath the radar was to gathering via Picked Clean, where you could sacrifice your HQ gathering for more NQ items, and depending on what you're gathering, you could get a ton of it. (think I got something like around 90 Darksteel Ore with Picked Clean on one node)

For what it's worth, "objects being left on their own long enough becoming sentient" isn't a XIV specific bit of lore, it's actual Japanese folklore. Shintoism believes that something with a "strong" enough will becomes a deity, and that the divine can be found among all the living. The word they use for God, "kami", itself more or less meaning spirit, explicitly refers to that idea. It's been some years, but I believe the Ruby Sea part of Stormblood MSQ makes mentions of those concepts. As for objects, this is called tsukumogami, and it's a pun. Tsukumo can mean "a tool" but can also be written differently to mean "ninety-nine", so the belief is that if a tool survives ninety-nine years without being damaged, it can come to life.

I know the tell for the icon on Moko with his turning slash is weird since it turns with your camera, but honestly, I found it really helpful to determine the safe spots in the criterion and savage version since he does 3 slashes in a row at that point. I go to the first safe spot and aim the camera as if it's his back, then turn my camera for the second safe spot, and then I can easily read the third one

Good luck with the paths on Aloalo Island. The hidden path is easy to figure out, but it is finicky. You have to do the steps in a VERY specific way. My own Achievement hunt is going well. This week I got all the Shared FATE achievements for Dawntrail and a couple more jobs maxed. I'm thinking about holding off on leveling and focus more on old high end content. I still need a couple Endwalker mounts and some of the "Complete Savage X times" achievements.

We noticed that there is a little trick with the exp to level any job you want without playing it. The job you enter the variant dungoen with will get any exp you get from the dungeon, even when changing to warrior or other good solo jobs. We enter the dungeon with the job we want the exp for, switch to the job we want to play and then take the 30% exp earrings on that job.

Cider's points about the lack of reward or fun in fighting trash mobs is honestly the main reason I liked FFXIV over the other MMOs I've played because they have Trials allowing me to just skip straight into boss fights with mechanics

I don't know why exactly they removed the xp from trash mobs between bosses and instead went for cumulative xp from the bosses, but I remember us going "hey, i need (a small amount of xp) to level, anyone wanna kill a couple dungeon mobs?" because the dungeon mobs definitely gave more xp than overworld ones lol and so you would level up before hitting the first boss and just leave the dungeon

The talk about how killing regular mobs doesn't feel worth it really stuck with me. It made me realize that, aside from map completion, there are a bunch of places in Dawntrail maps that I never really paid that much attention to - because why bother? Shaaloani is the Wild West filled with freaking dinosaurs and it doesn't offer you any reason at all to interact with any of them, unless you really want 2000 EXP.
