Possibly other people have pointed this already, but you missed a subtle point in the lore. Alo Alo isn't where the lalas went after Nym; it's where they came from *before* Nym, and in fact, where they came from before they travelled to the Unlost World. If you complete Alo Alo Island before doing the Dawntrail MSQs you get additional text in the Living Memory portion that clarifies. Lalafell originate from Alo Alo island. During the Fifth Umbral Era, a terrible ice age rendered the island uninhabitable. The lalafell population split - one faction crossed the ice and migrated to Eorzea, where they founded Nym and Mhach, and to this day their descendants live. The other faction travelled through a portal to the Unlost World and now their descendants live in Solution 9.

I think you hit the nail on the head in the last video when you talked about how removing xp from trash fights took the fun out of them. Having to plow through mobs because it's a dungeon and they're there feels more like a chore than gameplay. It feels like the mobs have way too much HP in the criterion dungeons too. It all ends up feeling like a slog, which is why I don't do them that much even though I like the concept.

I kinda adore Criterion trash since the monsters have one or two mechanics each and there is also an "avoid the patrol" type mechanic in most of them that you really can't get in a normal bosses. (Please do correct any inaccuracies) Quick breakdown of Woox Walking: Normally when your character attacks in Oldschool Runescape they stall for a tick (0.6 seconds) however if the enemy's attack pulls you into your weapon's range, through auto-retaliate, and you queue a step back out at the right rhythm you skip this stall. The most notable boss that this is used again is Vorkath who has an attack that targets your current tile and .6 seconds later its it, thus if you're always moving, you never get hit.

When I raided in Guild Wars 2, one of my favorite raid bosses was a big lady with a flamethrower. She had a line AOE that targeted a random person and she'd spin counterclockwise and if it touched you, you were dead. instantly. if you knew how, you could jump over it, but it was pretty tight timing. Her boss platform also had a health bar and so it was a DPS race to beat her before the cannons around the arena blew up the platform. You could send people to the cannons to destroy them, but you needed someone to get a special action to throw a bomb at the player on a certain spot to launch them to the cannon, then they had to kill the cannon and fly back to the group. This boss also had three mini boss phases that were each unique, and one of them required you to stun the miniboss during a certain window or everyone got knocked up and back, usually off the arena. The boss also targeted the furthest player away with a very long lasting AOE puddle so usually the healer had to bait that and drop it and the boss did this basically every 7 seconds or so. The thing is, this isn't even all of the mechanics and the boss wasn't really even that hard. It's one of the first raid bosses they came out with, but I still think back on how many moving pieces there are in that fight and how increasingly chaotic and fun it got. Then I also remember how hard it was to get people who were actually willing to stop dpsing to go kill cannons and how even fewer of them could remember the order the cannons get killed in. Basically I guess what I'm saying is that you can create unique, complex, fun fights with their own mechanics but you can very easily create a scenario where no one wants to take personal responsibility, DPS don't want to do the mechanics, and everyone gets frustrated with each other as a result simply because some innovative designer thought this was a neat idea. tl;dr: game design hard.
@Boethion4 ай бұрын
Its really telling that the most innovative designs are all from ARR, HW and STB when they were still actively copying WoW (Alexander is just diet Ulduar). While I wouldnt call them creatively bankrupt just yet they are getting close to running out of ideas.
@obsidiangrimoire4 ай бұрын
I think the thing I miss most from GW2's raid wings and Fractal CMs was that you can't really DPS check to skip most mechanics because they usually involve an invuln phase or otherwise force the party to engage with them or die instantly, and the ones you can skip with DPS are _really_ difficult to do so on, Gorseval aside. You HAVE to engage with the fights as intended, for the most part, and combined with the mechanics of every fight being entirely unique, it makes raids and group fights always feel interesting to do instead of bosses just being big HP punching bags.

Also, not sure if this was intentional on SE's part, but I remember people used to theory-craft that Lalafells were actually Allagan experiments based on some descriptions of fish you could catch in Azys Lla. Not sure if the weird Lalafell fish here is supposed to be a nod to that, although its hard to tell how much of that is just the localization folks going ham with the english descriptions.

I see you keep complaining about the trash mobs in variant dungeons... But you seem to be forgetting that they're directly involved in several of the puzzles necessary to get all the endings (killing a certain order, allowing/not allowing a certain attack to go off, killing in certain locations/facing certain directions, etc). It's not all the time, but they do happen often enough that I feel they do add to the experience (plus they make for interesting challenges when you do the criterion dungeons). All in all, I think they're implemented well in variant/criterion dungeons
@ngwoo4 ай бұрын
I mean only like 1 or 2 out of the what, 30+ trash pulls per variant dungeon is actually used in a puzzle
@eorzeanadventurer71714 ай бұрын
@@ngwoo there's more like 12 separate trash packs in a variant dungeons, and 2 of them being directly involved in getting specific endings is a decent rate I think (16% to be precise). Plus, when figuring out these puzzles yourself, you've got to find the answers and the trash pack answers can be some of the trickiest to figure out

While I understand the use of guides for content sake, I am inclined to say a big part of the fun on Variant Dungeons is figuring out the paths by yourself. If you just look at the recipe and execute, it just feel like a big chore on the way to the 12 endings mount. The easy endings usually are the ones that give hints for the hard endings, and the hard endings are the ones that drop the hints for the secret boss. When you don't have a guide on the side, you aren't even sure which path is the one with the secret boss, and figuring things out involves a lot of experimentation. Said that, Aloalo secret boss is literally spelled out for you. I actually fought it before even unlocking all the endings, and took me a while to find out the last ending of the center path.
@Boethion4 ай бұрын
My issue is that I just don't have the patience to rerun the dungeon 20 more times because I failed to figure out a puzzle when its already such a chore to get through them with all the boring trash and spoungy bosses. That said this is also my fault for doing them Solo instead of trying to find a group and blast through them faster.
@NibelungJ4 ай бұрын
@@Boethion I get it, it requires a specific mindset to tackle it, and just like the MSQ, some people take the MSQ as a reward on itself, and others just see it as the gate blocking access to endgame content. For me, since the bosses and enemies aren't really a challenge after the initial runs, it becomes just "form a theory, check it out, think something else if that don't unlock a new ending". Everyone have their style of content they don't enjoy. I absolutely loathe Eureka and Bozja, and I know I'll have to tackle it eventually for achievements. Your reaction to Variant is the same I have for Field Operations.

Regarding trash in old raids: I've often thought that the design of the Coils would've made more sense if each tier was one big long continuous duty with multiple bosses and trash/mini puzzles in between. It would've felt much more like "raids" in other games (which are more like bigger harder dungeons) as opposed to the modern FFXIV "raids" which are functionally just Trials with a different reward system. But because Coils was split up into a bunch of Turns per tier, instead of feeling like a big dungeon it felt like a series of boss fights with random timewasting bullshit at the start of a few of them. And going forward from there the devs just leaned into that and made future raids actually just a series of bosses with nothing connecting them.

I don't think its necessarily an issue with the mobs themselves. In other mmo's instanced dungeons have structure. The SPACE has a clear purpose. An area might be a kitchen or a factory floor. In FF14 dungeons most areas are not defined in that way they are all just arena's or paths to arena's without context. This would take very little effort to add and then suddenly the trash mobs would make sense in context. Furthermore there are group combat mechanics that can be added with the areas context in mind. A factory floor where the foreman barks orders if you focus the foreman you fight less trash mobs, a forge area where you have static furnaces that if you destory them first you fight less trash. The consequence of not doing them properly is really just time instead of a loss. tldr: adding purpose to areas will lead to trash making more sense and even lead to better mechanics.

TBH I think the sole reason for "trash" is just to pad the run time otherwise players would be completing dungeons "too fast". Granted they could put a cooldown mechanic after you complete a dungeon but yea that is annoying also. It really all stems from a progression curve and how fast they designed you to go through it. That said doesn't mean I like it, just understand the principle is all. Similar arguments are also around with the "quest arch types" in that there are only so many arch types. yea it sucks, but coming up with a new one isn't as easy as one thinks. Usually they end up being some variant of an existing type. TBH I prefer when the world "appears" to change because I did a quest. For example we need X resource so we can build a wall, after you finish said quest a wall is build. Same variant we need X resource to repair wall. After quest wow the wall is repaired. You can tie that into having local mobs constantly trying to "destroy" said wall so it seems more organic. Still a glorified fetch quest, but it seems to the players perspective less fetch quest and more inworld building.

I am in general no fan of trash, but I can get into trash that is design like mini bossfights. The Criterion try to make trash more strategic with either boss mechanics oder stage hazards to make you move. The normal "spam aoes and wait" trash isn't fun for me. The only time I enjoy it, is in giant dungeon pulls where good mitigation spacing and healing is necessary to get through it. But sadly they removed a lot of them when reworking old dungeons.

extremely funny to get a dungeon trash mob rant in the only content where they're actually tied to puzzle solving, granted it's only 1 or 2 per variant dungeon. i remember trying to solve Aloalo alone and absolutely losing my mind over the tree because i did it by *accident* once and had no idea what i did. in Sildihn i could *see the other path* but hadn't actually unlocked the ending that gives you the answer for the drakes so i had a run where i did it *almost* correct but accidentally killed the 2nd largest first by a server tick (thanks for all those automatic aoes, yoshi p) and then thought i had to kill them smallest to largest. but it's leagues above what the rest of the dungeon trash have ever offered besides "should you let the morbol seeds hatch in arum vale for more exp" and the answer was "only if you're in the exact level bracket where it would matter and even then, only if the party allows it" and now they don't drop exp at all so you're just wasting time if you let them hatch
