Thanks, Felix! The trailer is not home made. It's a Carry-On 3.5x5SLHS 3.5x5-ft trailer from Lowe's. I transformed it immediately after purchase to mimic some ideas that I was using on the Carry-On 4x6 tilt-bed that I had sold after having used it for 20 years. I have a full write-up on my website at stealthgti.com/carry-on-3-5x5lshs-trailer/. However, it does not show the latest rack updates. I'll have to create a walk-around video. -Scott

@@felixcolon5149 - It depends on which rack you saw. The rack in this video is a Yakima with old school 1A Raingutter towers mounted to "TopLoaders," which create a fake raingutter on my trailer. If you've seen my most recent video ("Review Our Stuff"), then you may have seen a photo with another rack, which is an Outdoorsman 300 with an OffGrid cargo basket on top. I'll do a walk-around video soon. In fact, this weekend should be a great time to get some footage since I'll be hauling 100 gallons of water and 300 lbs of ice in support of a large bicycling event. After years of waiting for a *SMALL* manual transmission pickup truck, *with* modern safety technology, I gave up. I bought a used 4x6 utility trailer from someone I know, and did full maintenance on it (new lights and wires, new tires and wheels, repacked hubs, new deck), and I'm loving it! It's kind of funny in that the trailer had a rough life before, but now is in the garage all the time. Talk about a trailer retirement. LOL It's great to be able to carry "dirty" stuff without messing up the interior of the car.

Thanks for this video. I just watched your Yakima video and you look like a different person. @StealthGTI3 жыл бұрын
Awesome! I've considered an Outback. With factory roof rails, I'd likely consider the roof box over the trailer. However, that would also depend on what I need to carry and whether it would fit in the box. I took the Baby Trailer to California last year (documented in my "Coast to Coast" playlist). I felt compelled to unload anything valuable since it's easy enough to break into, being at waist-level. This year, I'm taking my newly-converted cargo trailer back to California (new videos in the works). It's been VERY nice to just leave it locked-up. I don't keep anything in it that I need to access each day. This has been WAY better than needing to unload each evening. I didn't bring a roof box this time. I was not pleased with the marring on my paint from long-term mounting of the roof rack. See more about my trailers in my playlists. Regarding me looking like a different person, YES, I feel different, too! I got down to 180, from 240, at a point. I felt too slender. I think 190 is good. Unfortunately, 2020 brought-on a few pounds, as did my current trip. I need to lose 15 pounds, which is better than my previous need to lose 60! ;-) Thanks for visiting!

This is a very informative video. I've always wanted a truck and I've had two old f150s which were nothing but costly trouble. Realistically I cant justify the purchase of a new truck. I really want a Honda Ridgeline but even used ones are quite pricey. For the few times i would really need a truck, I think a trailer would do the trick. I just don't know much about them. I think a nice trailer at about $1000 would save me a bunch of money over buying a truck which would be more expensive and have usually worse gas mileage.

@StealthGTI Жыл бұрын
A trailer of this small size is not so great for lumber. Plywood is too wide and has to ride diagonally and a typical 8-ft board has to hang out of the end of the trailer. Both are manageable, but a 5x8 or even a 4x6 trailer would be better. With that said, I've carried long boards on the rack above the trailer and I've moved plywood at an awkward angle. Take Care!

How do you weigh what is in the trailer and how the weight is distributed? Is it just a matter of individually weighing the things you put in or is there some other technique to it?
@StealthGTI2 жыл бұрын
I don't weigh unless I think I'm loading more than 500-700 lbs. Once it gets that heavy, then I think I need to pay attention. So, I weight items separately and put the heavier items closer to the axle. I mention that in the first few minutes of this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pF69n2Zoo9qGl9k. With the mulch, I knew that 1/2-bucket was around 1000 lbs, depending on moisture content. I didn't drive the Interstate with those loads since I was not 100% certain of its weight. For the gravel, the lot has a scale for before and after weights so that they know what the charge. My first load was too heavy for my liking; so, I shoveled some out and reweighed, with my goal being about 1000 lbs of product. I noted the level of the stones and then used that as a guide on future visits. Thanks for visiting!

One thing not mentioned I find very useful is the ability to attach the trailer to an ATV or lawn tractor. I have a small utility trailer. It's gets use. I recently bought a small Ecosport SUV. I'm limited to light towing with it. That trailer pairs great with it. The trailer is older r I use it with my previous a Jeep Compass. The trailer being a simple category 1 trailer and 2000lb axle make sit light enough that I can also use it and tow it with the ATV and also use it with the compact lawn tractor. I've routinely went and got mulch in trailer then came home and hooked the trailer to ATV or lawn tractor and towed it around the yard and flower beds. So convenient for that. Also handy for towing with tractor and gathering downed limbs or camp firewood with.
@StealthGTI4 жыл бұрын
That's an excellent point! I don't own a tractor or ATV. My property is not large enough to justify it. But, if I lived in the sticks and had more land, I'd certainly consider a tractor and pull this little trailer around as a dolly. ;-) Thanks for visiting.

I'm thinking of rolling the trailer to my back yard when not in use. Is this trailer light enough to do this or would it be too heavy? Also, is the trailer 3.5ft wide including the wheels? Trying to see if it would fit through my fence gate.
@StealthGTI2 жыл бұрын
The factory trailer is light enough to move alone... even this one with the wooden box is light enough, especially when I use my small trailer dolly (amzn.to/3wXfHzl). The 3.5-ft width is the size of the box, not the axle with wheels. The total width is closer to 60 inches. It will not fit through a gate that's only intended for walk-thru. Thanks for visiting!

Search for KZbin "3.5x5LSHS" and you should see one of my video in the results. The video will show what I've done to improve a great little trailer. With that shared, Carry-On has discontinued that trailer and replaced it with one that's six inches wider, the "4x5LSHS," available to order at Lowe's. Switching to a 4-ft wide trailer allows for easier axle swaps, should you ever need one. Like the 3.5x5' it replaced, it's almost never available without a wait. So, if you see one, snatch it up before it disappears. Thanks for visiting!

Nice video thanks for sharing it. Question? I noticed those bars like a rack that you have connected to the top. What are those and where did you get them. I have an 2020 Outback and thinking about purchasing a 3.5 x 5 Lowes trailer just mainly to haul my kayaks etc.
@StealthGTI2 жыл бұрын
I have two different racks featured in this video. One is a set of standard Yakima crossbars on gutter-mount risers. They clamp onto artificial "roof gutters" that are made by Yakima. They hold the bars about 4-6 inches above the trailer. I also feature a set of Outdoorsman 300 racks. They're designed for pick-up truck beds and required modification and non-standard mounting practices to fit them to my trailer. I don't recommend that path, especially since there appears to be newer and better options by both Yakima and Thule. After two coast-to-coast trips with trailers in tow (see my playlists), I have an appreciation for the lower racks for better aerodynamics. I'm on the verge of making some changes to my "baby trailer" to make the low racks more appealing. See more details about my baby trailer at kzbin.info/www/bejne/nXXZoGagrNeNpNE, if you're interested. Thanks for visiting!

Thanks for writing, Rick! And, yes, I see your follow-up reply. I do blur my license plates in online content. Most utility trailers have their license plates mounted beneath their driver's side tail light since there's a clear lens that glows beneath it. Unfortunately, my plate kept getting beat up since the tiny trailer runs the plate so close to the ground. Here in Virginia, we have the option to mount a motorcycle plate instead. So, I opted to flip my license plate bracket and put the plate above the light. I added a separate light to make everything legal. Thanks for visiting!

Paul - I'd look at Tractor Supply Co or Lowes for their smallest trailers. I'm told my Carry-On 3.5x5 model is scarce, but the 4x6 versions are not too hard to find. Personally, I'd avoid the small trailers from Harbor Freight and Northern Tools that you assemble at home. If you read their owner's manuals, each limit the speed of the trailer to 45 mph for some reason, perhaps as a result of the bolt-together design. I honestly don't know, though. For a hitch, a quick look at etrailer.com shows three hitches available for the latest Matrix. I like the #C12228 by Curt. It tucks behind the bumper better than the other models. Don't forget about the lighting module. Visit my website at stealthgti.com/torklift-ecohitch-and-carry-on-trailer/ for more info about my lighting module and trailers. Good Luck!

Robert - Thanks for the note. There's far more to my car than what's seen on the outside. My practice of blurring the plates may have started with a bit of paranoia in 1998, but it has been my standard practice for so long that I just keep doing it, even if it's accomplishing little more than learning or sharpening some editing skills. ;-) As for the plate being public where I live and drive, 99.99% of those who see me in public don't know what's in my car, but 99.99% of those who visit my website do know the car, but don't need to know exactly where to find me. It's an odd dichotomy, for sure. HAHA! I'll just keep doing what I'm doing... it seems to be working. In fact, I once had a car get broken into. The thieves stole the aftermarket head unit and a few small items (I forgot to remove the faceplate). They had no idea they were sitting on a gold mine of hidden electronics. Great video. I'm wondering how useful is a trailer if you need to face rural roads which are, at least in my country, unpaved and bumpy. I'm worried if the chassis of my car will end damaged due to the transmission of all the sharp movements. Do you have an opinion about that?
@StealthGTI3 жыл бұрын
I don't think bumpy roads will be a terrible problem if you don't exceed 10-15% of the trailer's weight on the hitch. In my case, I have larger tires on the trailer to soak up more bumps. My hitch is also mounted to the bumper's bolted mounting points instead of how some hitch go through the car's sheet metal floor. I'm confident that my setup would be fine on a rough road, albeit painful to listen to all of the extra noise. Thanks for visiting!

What is the best trailer for the chevy Suburban sir ?
@StealthGTI4 жыл бұрын
I suspect a Suburban can pull just about anything you have in mind, aside from truly heavy-duty stuff. What is "best" really depends on what you need to move and how much weight you're comfortable with towing. With that said, I don't think the trailer I featured in this video would be a good fit for a Suburban. It's so tiny that it would get lost behind it; plus, it would be VERY difficult to back with the 'Burb's long wheelbase. Thanks for visiting.
@djimmy6164 жыл бұрын
@@StealthGTI Thank u for replying to my comment ☺️ for some reasons maybe even with a suburban u still need a trailer , for ex if u have a farm and u need some sands u absolutely need a trailer . I found that suburban can towing 8000+ lbs , so what do u think ?
@StealthGTI4 жыл бұрын
@@djimmy616 - Again, it depends on what you need to haul. Do you need to keep your cargo dry? If yes, then you may want a cargo trailer (enclosed) rather than a utility trailer (open). Do you think you'll ever transport a car? You'll want a 7x14 at a minimum. A "typical" tandem axle utility trailer can carry about 5300 lbs of cargo, but weigh about 1700 lbs empty. Heavy duty trailers are obviously more expensive, too. So, it all depends on where you want to draw your lines.

Do you feel a need to run an auxiliary transmission cooler or any sort of "helper springs" in the rear when towing ~1000 lbs.? I'm debating running a similar setup with a '19 Hyundai Sonata SE and a Carry-On 4x6 covered trailer (450 lbs.) down the road.
@StealthGTI5 жыл бұрын
Ed - I do not use either of those upgrades. My car has a manual transmission. So, I did upgrade to a stiffer clutch. However, that was more of a necessity for the extra 80 hp and 100+ lb-ft from tuning upgrades than the trailer loads. I do not feel the need for helper springs because, even with 1500-lbs total trailer weight, the tongue weight should be less than 200 lbs, or perhaps the weight of a passenger. If your plan is to cover the trailer and keep the load low, then there shouldn't be any substantial wind load added to the driveline. In short, towing within the limits you present, you won't be asking your car's suspension or brakes to do anything it wasn't already designed to do, except for carrying a load outside of the car. This is especially true if you do not opt to pack a heavy load inside the car as well. Check the labels in your door jambs to see what they say for maximum cargo capacity (which includes passengers) and GVWR to tailor your expectations. Thanks for visiting. -Scott

Hi. Just curious, to what max speed have you taken this trailer? Some "sellers" of this trailer state 45mph max but it seems many people are going beyond that with no issues. I want one, but not if it has any issues on the freeway, up to 65mph. Thanks
@StealthGTI2 жыл бұрын
I don't know of any reports for THIS trailer, a Carry-On 3.5X5LSHS, being limited to 45 mph. Yes, the bolt-together units from Harbor Freight and Northern Tool have those notes, but not this one. To my knowledge, all Carry-On trailers are highway-worthy. To answer your question, I've maintained an 80-mph cruise over extended periods out west. My upgrade to larger wheels/tires may help since they reduce hub speeds. See my "Baby Trailer" playlist at kzbin.info/aero/PL-eEOW1YZ1aUfgb39PHbRFBoT0Z1YCONd to learn more about my specific utility trailer. Thanks for visiting!

How many cubic yards of dirt or mulch can the trailer fit?
@StealthGTI4 жыл бұрын
The internal dimensions of my trailer's homemade box are 58x41x18 inches, or 24 cubic feet. That's almost a cubic yard if filled to the top. However, a yard of soil would overload the trailer and exceed the towing capacity of my car since this trailer does not have brakes, especially if the soil's moisture content is high. Therefore, I usually request 1/2-yard, which fills to just under 3/4-full. Thanks for visiting.

Do you have any tips for towing the trailer when empty? Do you notice much difference? (I need to pick up one I've bought next week from about 100 miles away). Thanks in advance.
@StealthGTI3 жыл бұрын
If it's this exact trailer, you may experience some bouncing on rough roads and rattling on the hitch. A few cinder blocks or a 5-gallon jug of water at the front will help with the hitch noise. But nothing will stop the bouncing other than a load. Don't worry about that, though. The trailer will be fine. My recommendation about weighing the front is only for a more peaceful trip. Otherwise, the rattling won't hurt anything. Have fun and thanks for visiting!

The trailer started as a 3.5x5" trailer from Lowe's. I've done so much work to it that the frame and tongue is all that's original these days. I have a video walk-thru at kzbin.info/www/bejne/iGSog5iEdtuGmbc and a full write-up at stealthgti.com/carry-on-3-5x5lshs-trailer/. Lately, I've made a lighter lid and removed the rack for better aerodynamics. Believe it or not, I get better fuel economy pulling this trailer than with a cargo box mounted. It's quieter, too. I prefer pulling a trailer over mounting the cargo box, so long as I know I can find a place to park with a trailer along my journey. I even go so far as to scout ahead for parking areas via satellite imagery. HAHA! Thanks for visiting.

I have used trailers for 50 years and pickups over the years but nothing is quite as handy as a trailer. As far as small vehicles I pulled a 4x8 trailer for 8 years with a Ford fiesta amazing little tow set up I went 165,000 before I ever needed a clutch. I wish you would include some small part of your videos for anti-theft trailer theft is big business
@StealthGTI Жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing, Mike! As for anti-theft, I haven't bothered creating a video because the comments section would be full of sharpshooters that I don't care to moderate. HAHA! I use a simple tongue lock that will slow the average thief. However, anything can be stolen with enough time, tools, and privacy, including either of my two trailers. One good idea that I've read is buying a set of locking lug nuts and then putting them on one hub with an impact tool after removing a wheel. With 2-4 keyed lug bolts in place, the wheel cannot be replaced and the trailer cannot be rolled, towed or easily loaded onto anything without some work and NOISE (no privacy). The trade-off becomes that the trailers are less convenient to use. Is it 100% fool-proof? Probably not. But it's a good, relatively inexpensive deterrent. Thanks for visiting!

How difficult was adding oversized tires/wheels?
@StealthGTI5 жыл бұрын
Michael - It depends on your level of inclination. The factory fenders have to be cut off and replaced by larger fenders that are mounted higher. I don't have cutting tools, so I took it to someone who does. After mounting larger/higher fenders, new wheels/tires bolt right on. See more info at stealthgti.com/carry-on-3-5x5lshs-trailer/. I saw somebody killed when a trailer cut loose from the ball of the tow vehicle. Make sure you are not putting a 2" hitch on a 1 7/8 ball, and make sure the locking mechanism is adjusted reasonably snug, and make sure your chains are properly used, not rusted out, not dragging on the ground, etc.

I think Europe requires an endorsement for towing trailers as well. Their weight limits on vehicles are so much more strict than they are here in the States.
@StealthGTI3 жыл бұрын
Not sure if the weight limits are terribly restrictive. After all, the GTI's braked trailer weight limit appears to be based entirely on its tongue weight limit. SPEED is where they're quite strict, though. Exceeding the speed limit with a trailer in tow is a great way to invite the police to ruin a weekend. Pulling a trailer at 60 mph is definitely safer than the speeds at which some Americans pull their trailer. Thanks for visiting.

In North America the rated towing capacity of a Mk7 with DSG transmission is exactly 0 pounds ;) It's over a thousand for the same car in Europe :/
@StealthGTI4 жыл бұрын
Our speed limits and litigious society play a huge role in VWoA's decision to not "rate" the cars for towing. My current trip with utility trailer is going well. I have a check engine light and performance issue that needs diagnosing, but I have no reason to believe that it's associated with towing. I will provide updates as my travel series unfolds. Thanks for visiting.
@Strato504 жыл бұрын
@@StealthGTI Makes sense to me. There is no difference to 1000lbs of weight in the trailer (inc trailer) vs 1000lbs of passengers and cargo. With the trailer, it's off your suspension and tires. Performance wise aerodynamic drag is the only real difference.

@StealthGTI5 жыл бұрын
I think some have done it. But I'm honestly not sure. The deck length is 58 inches. I think a short wheelbase motorcycle might fit without being able to put the tailgate back on. However, I doubt that a longer motorcycle, like a cruiser, will fit. You definitely want to take some measurements of the bike and trailer to be certain. Good Luck! -Scott

@@StealthGTI Its real close the Fz07 that i own has a wheel Base of 55 inches
@StealthGTI5 жыл бұрын
@@joseperez2894 - I don't think that'll work. You also have to consider 1/2 the diameter of the front wheel/tire, which is approximately 12 inches. That would easily put the rear axle beyond the back edge of the deck. The bike MAY fit in there diagonally and with the handlebar turned, but you'd have to take a lot of measurements to be sure.
