+ADMIRALSCORNER One of the advantages of travelling on arranged tours, is that know where to take the best photos. This tour was organised by the "Railway Touring Company", it is in this years brochure under the heading " "Black Sea Express". not quite the same itinerary, as it is altered a little each year.

Cheers Steve, I have some more fascinating workshop and stored locomotive visits to post. It's taking a while to post my Bulgarian experience on KZbin as each video takes many hours to edit and I am also restoring my model railway after many years disuse and then there is work as well. Never a dull moment. Bye for now ..... Tim.

Terrific! By the way, Tsar Boris of Bulgaria was a railfan. I read somewhere that he used to enjoy being at the throttle. His son Simeon, now in his eighty's, is heir to the throne.

Cheers, I'm pleased you enjoyed it, some of the carriages making up our train were from Tsar Boris's train, I had heard that he liked to travel around the country in his own train. I didn't know he had a son, I've learned something new today 😉.

@@Timsvideochannel1 I love Eastern Europe and I love trains. I'm a history and language buff also; but admittedly don't know that much about Eastern European railroads per se. I did notice during the museum tour that at least one steam locomotive was from the Škoda works in what used to be Czechoslovakia. BTW, Simeon is perhaps the only living man who could potentially be called "Tsar".

Mountain class locomotives are few and far between these days, the only other ones I have travelled behind are NZR JA class No. 1271 and Slovakian "Albatross" No. 498.104.

What happened to the steam engine
@Timsvideochannel13 жыл бұрын
Hi, some of the steam engines are kept in working order to haul special trains, some have been placed on plinths at railway stations, whilst the rest slowly rust away in engine depots awaiting their eventual fate.

Hi tim another wonderful vid,I love the beautiful restored steam engine and the low down buffer shots bulgaria and the balkans is really the hidden gem of europe ,Cheer's bob from getting colder sydney it was only 17c the other day.

Hi Robert, wish it was 17C here in the UK, I don't think the temperature left single figures today. Bulgaria is a surprising country, with an almost complete rail system (No Beeching Axe). I'm looking forward to summer arriving. Take care. Tim.

is it a 3-cylinder?
@Timsvideochannel17 жыл бұрын
Hi, I didn't know the answer, so I looked it up and found this article confirming it is a three cylinder locomotive: - In 1941, the Bulgarian State Railways (BDZ) placed an order with Henschel & Son in Germany for fifty BDZ class 03 express passenger locomotives. They were of the type 2′D1′h3S (2-4-1 axle arrangement, simple steam expansion, superheating, three-cylinder, fast train service) and were designed to be capable of hauling heavy passenger trains over the often severe profiles of the 4 ft 8 1⁄2 in (1,435 mm) standard gauge Bulgarian mainlines, with gradients of up to 2.8%. The first two locomotives were delivered by the end of 1941. During trials, it proved that the specifications of the BDZ designing engineers were correct and that they had successfully overcome the shortcomings of insufficient power and some construction problems that had been experienced with the BDZ 2-8-2 Mikado class 01 1′D1′h2S and class 02 1′D1′h3S locomotives. Mass production began the following year, but was interrupted by war restrictions introduced by the German authorities and delivery was halted before the full order was filled. Only ten more locomotives were built and delivered at the end of 1942 and early 1943, and the total number of the BDZ class 03 remained at twelve locomotives, numbered 03.01 to 03.12. After 1958, these locomotives were gradually converted to mixed fuel oil and coal firing, which resulted in improved steaming ability and better performance, particularly on mountainous lines. During their 35 years of service, they exhibited excellent performance and only minor problems were experienced, such as oval wearing of the leading axle's inside crank. After factory repair, one of these locomotives, no. 03.12, was preserved in the depot at Gorna Oryahovitsa and returned to operation for tourist trains.

You can actually see the rod from the 3rd cylinder move back and forth if you look for it: 24:20, 26:33 and 31:35 for example. (It's at a slight angle.)
@raymondleggs55086 жыл бұрын
in the us there are 3 cylinder locomotives, that will never be restored to operation because they have 3 cylinder. The biggest example being the last remaining union pacific 9000 plus it's a very long rigid frame loco! being a 4-12-2
