You have to give a steam loco it’s head now and again. Blows the tubes out and it’s fun

Many thanks for this wonderful compilation, I too have not seen preserved steam at speed like this, and had forgotten what the sound was like

Well I've both watched and filmed a lot of amateur videos ... but frankly this is the best compilation of high speed steam trains I've seen .... excellent crisp HD quality sight and sound. Even managed to capture the dopler sound effects in some .... top video, well done.

Great stuff. Impressive that many are hauling 11, 12 or even 13 cars - plus the diesel in some cases - at that speed (and you know there'll be a full complement of passengers). Steam rules.

Thanks Laurie. The diesel locomotive adds a bit more weight to the train. In some cases, the load is equivalent to around 16 coaches!
@984francis9 жыл бұрын
+JS Rail Videos More accurately said, if you will permit is that the diesel adds a load equivalent to 3 coaches to the consist.

What an absolutely brilliant video! The 'action' shots are superb and the locations surprisingly varied. I'm surprised at which Regions allow Steam running (and which don't, without the ubiquitous 'diesel hanger on'!). The double-heading shots are particularly brilliant! Thank you!

Thank you very much, your comment is very much appreciated! Yes, there are certain parts of the network that now have a ban on steam, but that's for various reasons. It's always brilliant to see steam on the main line, especially at speed! Regardless of which region!

JS Rail Videos An interesting view at 29.33, with a Steam loco attached to the rear of a Steam excursion, as viewed from an over bridge!

This was the 'Blue Bell Explorer 2' back in November 2013. The tour itinerary took the train down two branch lines, and to maximise steam operations they used two locos - 34046 'Braunton' and 44932.

Some great photography and good sound. What would help those who do not live in the UK is identification of the locomotive by name. class and wheel arrangement, and the location.

It certainly is 60163 'Tornado', passing 6201 'Princess Elizabeth' which just so happened to be waiting at Swindon. 60163 was running late so she sped straight past, the atmosphere and sight is something we will never forget!

I'm still somewhat puzzled as to the criteria for the Authorities requiring a 'banking' diesel on Steam Excursions - does it depend on the Region on which the train is running, or perhaps the Power Classification of the locomotive? It seems that 7P and 8P locos are permitted to run on their own, but anything less powerful seems to have to have a 'banker' (with the exception of those excursions 'double-headed' by 2 Black Fives)?
@GreenAspectVideos7 жыл бұрын
A diesel is sometimes required as part of turning procedures, where a turntable is not accessible. However they will be used to assist steam tours when requested. Another example would be to reduce the risk of lineside fires in the Summer months! The loco would still be piloting, but with the diesel doing the work.
@ronleitch77887 жыл бұрын
JS Rail Videos For turning purposes, if the Steam loco is going to be 'pointing the right way' for the return trip, it would require either a turntable (few and far between nowadays), or a triangle! I don't see what difference a diesel at the front is going to make!
@ronleitch77887 жыл бұрын
I do, however, agree with your point about Line side fires if the Steam loco is NOT working 'flat out'!
@GreenAspectVideos7 жыл бұрын
It's also about finding a path in the working timetable. Sometimes there isn't enough time to find an alternative route, so a diesel would be necessary as part of a maneuvre, or to haul part of the journey.

Brilliant videos, a steam locomotive at speed is a real spectacle, it is a shame that many of the trains have to have a diesel tacked on the end, which is a real turn-off to any steam enthusiast.
@GreenAspectVideos7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Philip. Operational constraints mean that a diesel is needed at the back. Such as when there are no turning facilities at a terminus, and the diesel hauls a small section of the journey. They also assist when required, example being when there is a high fire risk.

Great vid, shame about the incessant wind noise. Suggestion get a piece of fairly open foam, cut it to size, find the microphones and stick it over them with any sort of tape you are happy with.....making sure of course you don't obscure the mics with tape of course....... then no more wind pop !
@GreenAspectVideos5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for commenting. Please bear in mind that some of these shots were taken around 7 / 8 years ago, and the equipment wasn't as advanced as it is now. We appreciate the noise isn't exactly nice, but we suggest watching more recent videos on the channel if you're looking for videos with less wind noise.
