When you set it to 45fps at 90hz, if you get a missed frame, because the refresh rate is high, there is less time until the next frame is refreshed, so less frame time. It smoothes out the hiccups, when compared to 45fps in a 45hz container in the old steam deck

@@cloudGGs check the digital foundry video called "Steam Deck Gets Even Better: 40-60Hz Support, VRS, Refined Acoustics - Tested" after minute 12:20. They said that the drawback of decreasing the refresh rate of the deck to 40hz to cap the fps to 40 was the increase in frame time when a frame was skiped, compared to 30 fps at 60hz. So now it will no longer have this problem, because now we have an even faster refresh rate, so we can run 40 fps at 80 hz or 45 fps at 90 hz.

I’ve had my Oledeck for about 5 days now and honestly if the original Deck released like this, the Ally wouldn’t have been able to launch without some major improvements imo. I know I probably wouldn’t have ended up getting the Ally but it still has its sweet spot which is plugged in on the couch, at the desk at work, on a plane but mainly running anything but plugged in with superior performance. If the Ally had 60wh battery and a version of the Z1E that performed as powerfully and efficiently at low TDP as the deck, then that would be the superior device. Either way I’m excited to see what the Ally and Deck look like next generation.

I had an LCD Steam Deck. Got an Ally at launch and ended up selling the LCD deck because the screen on the Ally was just so much better. Plus I play plugged in most of the time so bumping up the wattage to get extra performance at the expense of battery life didn't bother me. When the OLED deck was announced, I told myself I wouldn't get one because I wouldn't want to give up the extra performance, extra resolution and VRR of the Ally. Then I tried out my friend's OLED deck, and man. It's seriously tempting. That screen is just so nice, even with the lack of VRR and a lower resolution. Just seeing it makes me want one, but again, I don't know if I would be able to give up the VRR and extra performance + game compatibility. When my friend and I were trying both devices, even at 15w the Ally tended to perform better, but I noticed that games loaded more quickly on the Deck, at least when loading to the main menu. Windows just has bloat that SteamOS doesn't have to deal with.
@filt3rless
@filt3rless 10 ай бұрын
That's a tough one! I love the Ally for the raw power, VRR, and 1080p display. But the deck provides that 'console'-like experience, and quick resume is one of the best features, in my opinion. Losing game compatibility is a big one, though. I can't get Black Ops 3 Zombies or Grid Legends working on the SD. However, I have a gaming PC and use Moonlight to stream the games to the SD, getting around 10 hours of battery doing that. If I didn't have a gaming PC, though, I think the Ally would still be my choice just because it can play the latest titles well and has broader compatibility, Game Pass, etc. One thing I did find on the SD OLED is that setting a 45FPS cap works great. It keeps the display at 90Hz, so if it dips below 45FPS, it's not as noticeable as it would be on the LCD model. And just an FPS cap will automatically pull the watts down. No need to set a TDP cap, which I really enjoy. To me, it's a much less 'tinker' device and is more of a 'just play' device.

It's definitely going to come down to what games you're playing and how important battery life is. I think for me the Ally can push more power, but at 25+ watts it gets around 1 hour. With the Steam Deck I frequently see 3-4 hours, or even 6+ in lighter games making it a much more "handheld" experience IMO. It's a really tough choice!

yep been using the OLED 2 days now... its astonishing honestly, the efficiency and battery life is something else. As an ally owner i will say there are some games i absolutely do think look better on the ally due to the lower resolution of the deck... cult of the lamb for example i think just looks better on ally, the deck is a shimmery mess at 800p... but then ill play a game like tetris effect on the deck oled and have my eyeballs blown out of my head by the clarity OLED brings at an individual pixel level... the deck oled has honestly made me end my 6 month ally relationship. Ally has some nice features ofcourse but its ultimately not as refined as deck even when not comparing displays. Good to see regular Ally content makers giving other handhelds the time of day, handhelds are handhelds at the end of the day and were in a great time for handheld gaming whatever you own.
@filt3rless
@filt3rless 10 ай бұрын
It is absolutely amazing how long it lasts. It's the only portable system I've owned recently where I don't feel the need to check battery percentage frequently. Another thing that's nice is when you set an FPS cap on the SD, it's really good at lowering the watts down. On something like the Ally, it'll still eat up the power. I like both though for different reasons and will be keeping the Ally as it's a beast in AAA games and allows me to play/do anything with it. But the OLED is great for picking up and just playing for a few minutes (which is all I have time to do currently).
@jinx20001
@jinx20001 10 ай бұрын
@@filt3rless yup totally agree, i know what you mean about it sipping power when capping fps. I also like how easy it is to lower down or higher the wattage by 1 watt at a time in just 2 seconds… so easy to find a sweet spot for games instantly instead of setting up profiles. I was also playing sonic mania earlier with pretty high brightness and getting back it reporting over 8 hours battery remaining, I was like what is this wizardry. Valve know how to work that magic sauce that’s for sure. Absolutely the ally still has its place though. FYI my deck oled left analogue stick clicks a little when I move it to, but I also had this on the ally sticks aswell, the deck sticks seem tighter with less play, definitely better sticks but yeh thought I’d let you know mine make that sound aswell, well my left one does.

Yeah I sold my ROG Ally for the Steam Deck OLED after having my Ally for 6 months. I realized the Ally just didn't really do it for me as I found myself gravitating towards my gaming PC since I felt like the Ally was just an inferior version of my Gaming Desktop. Why deal with windows on a touch screen when I have a windows desktop that will give me a much better experience? That made me realize how much I missed my Steam Deck because it just has so much more personality to it. Once the OLED got announced I was so happy because that meant the Steam Deck now fixed the issues I had with the LCD Screen (terrible backlight, dull colors, terrible touch responsiveness, 60hz, etc). Can't wait to fall in love with the Steam Deck all over again

Dude your videos are awesome as usual! I just ordered the OLED a couple of days back (as you suggested the gloss screen 512 model) I like my Ally, but when I used it handheld I always keep the tdp at 17W, and the SD performs the same on those TDP to Ally from my research. I also don’t think you need a 1080 screen in a small screen. Finally, what did it for me was discovering Moonlight/Sunshine; you see I also use my Ally docked to my TV to enjoy couch gaming, and there I up the TDP to 25W. But with moonlight on steam, I can now do the same as I have a good desktop 😁 I’ll be following your upcoming videos on steam, can’t wait for your optimizations!👍🏼

Thanks man! I think you'll like the OLED a LOT :) Moonlight is a game changer. I was just using it and getting around 9 1/2 hours of battery at 90Hz on the SD. It's a perfect combo, getting the OLED / battery life and graphics 😁 Then for lighter games the steam deck runs them well and still getting really great battery life natively. Planning on doing a watt comparison (every watt), to see how the LCD vs OLED compares and might even throw the Ally in as it approaches 7-8W (since that's the lowest the Ally goes in most games I tested).

I am not surprised about the Ally and LCD deck getting close to identical run times. They both have the exact same battery size so equal TDP means eauql run times. Why the LCD deck lasts longer is because you don't have to push TDP up as much to get acceptable performance in games. This allows you to run longer because it simply takes less power where as on the Ally you typically need to use higher TDPs to get decent performance in games. I do have the Deck OLED and I love it so far. Hopefully I can get an Ally or another Windows handheld at somepoint

The OLED is better than the LCD, but it feels a bit less responsive then even something like the Ally. You'll also want to cap FPS on the Steam Deck since there is no VRR and framerate fluctuations are pretty noticable. Overall even my 60Hz FreeSync monitor with a 57FPS cap feels a lot more responsive than the Steam Deck. The 165Hz on my laptop is in another realm.

That looks great👌 my first thought when I heard about 90hz on the SD was: nice. Now when AAA games are hovering around 35-38fps I will set it to 70hz and cap it to 35fps or so and have a smooth experience. That was for me one of my main issues with the Steam Deck... While playing uncharted or something as demanding it was on those lower 30fps and it would stutter quite a bit. That's why I got the Ally which is much smoother overall (even more with the VRR) . But that Oled Steam Deck looks really nice... Will probably skip it though as I'm very happy with the Ally.
@filt3rless
@filt3rless 10 ай бұрын
The Ally with VRR is superior in the stutter/smoothness department. I find I need to try and run a locked frame rate on the OLED still, even if the display is set to 90Hz. And when it's locked to a solid FPS it feels pretty good, but the Ally lets you run uncapped and fluctuating frames while being butter smooth. Definitely worth waiting for the next gen handhelds before upgrading. I wonder if we'll see an Ally 2 😮

I had Steam Deck LCD and I dont have good experience with it abd thats the reason I sold it off - - Games were not smooth - I was using quacked / pirated games and the performance was not smooth enough because of pre compiled shader cache - On some games it was okay but still there was stutter all the time and quality of graphics was not satisfying because you have to lower the preset - secondly the resolution was not 1080p like rog Ally Now I want to purchase the OLED Model because of the brighter screen but I wonder will that make any difference ?? or should I wait for Rog Ally 2 ?
@filt3rless

I didn't like the Steam Deck LCD. I just couldn't stand the screen itself. The OLED is amazing IMO. However, it's still where you'd want to run an FPS cap. The nice thing about the OLED though is the 90Hz refresh rate. So you can set a 45FPS cap and the screen stays at 90Hz. This makes it so there isn't any black flashing, and it feels more responsive than if the screen and FPS were both at 45. I don't know if it's worth it or not, but I find the OLED a lot better and have been using it frequently. The battery life is amazing, fan noises is lower, thermals better, etc. However, it's not that powerful, so when running older games it'll be great, but trying to push newer/demanding games will be problematic. I think it's worth trying, and if you don't like it then you could return it after a few days of use.

What's your thoughts on the Ally vs OLED steam deck IF you're able to get the ally Z1 extreme version for under $600.
@filt3rless
@filt3rless 10 ай бұрын
That's a tough one! It really depends on what you're looking for. If you have a gaming PC then the SD could be a better choice as you can use a program like Moonlight to stream more demanding games to the Steam Deck. If it's your only device and you're wanting something that does a bit of everything, the Ally is the way to go. You can dock the Ally and use it as a full fledge PC (even editing videos on it). But the Steam Deck has Steam OS and gives a more console like experience. Let me know what you're primarily wanting to do with the device and I'll let you know what might be the best choice :)

Nothing on this channel is sponsored. I buy things I think I'll like, some things I do, others I don't. The OLED was surprising in just how good it is. Excellent screen, quick resume, Steam OS and 4-5 hours playing Skyrim is crazy. It's a beast for a handheld. But for docking the system and using it as a computer the Ally or any other windows handheld would be a way better choice. I'm only using it for games, and mostly older ones at that (which is where it really shines).

If you wanted to test their battery life you needed to do a couple of things. Lock to a power target, aka 10-15w, that is the same lock on all the devices. Lock the fps to 30, for maximum battery life on all devices. Run the exact same tests.

I'll have to wait for steam to fix the stutter issue in 3.5. Before this I ran performance tests in the 7-10W range and got massive stuttering on the LCD model after the update. Not sure what valve did to cause this. The FPS control worked better here as it was sometimes 15-20FPS different in something like Skyrim when using 7W TDP on 3.4.11 vs 3.5.5.

Hey, this is a valid point and they're not brand new. So if I had every unit in it's out of the box state, the Ally and LCD would do better than you're seeing here. I will say though if every device was new, the OLED would still pull ahead by a pretty large margin.

At 15 watts on both (which is the max for the steam deck), the Ally is silent. You'd have to put your ear on the fan vent to really hear it. You can hear the OLED fan, but it's not distracting like on the LCD model. Now if you're running max power on both (15W on SD and 30W on Ally), the Ally is louder.

That is a very valid concern. The SD is definitely not for the latest AAA games. It's really good at emulation though and most of my Steam Library is very playable.
