Congratulations for your acquisition! Great video👍👏. Be careful while using performance mode (or balance in G-helper). There is a bug that shuts one of the two fans on the Ally while on that mode and could damage your Ally because the temps get higher and higher. There was a PSA on the discord section of the XG-mobile.

Merry Xmas! I got the XGM3080 as well. It came as a bundle with my Flow X13 laptop which I had purchased previously and works a treat with the Ally! I also bought the ROG portable 15" monitor as well, so that it makes a complete mini gaming system. Strange about the USB dropout issue, I have yet to have that problem at all.

Glad yours is working well! I love mine as well, but the USB problem is a big deal. That is a mini gaming rig you have there. They're all super small parts compared to a full setup, yet give awesome performance. One thing that's magic about the XG Mobile is the fact they got the PSU, GPU & ports inside of it with no external power brick. And it has enough power to charge your laptop/Ally and power the GPU.

I bought myself the 4090 XG for Christmas and it’s nuts. I have it docked to my 77” 4k tv and I can run Cyberpunk on ultra settings with ray tracing averaging like 90 fps.

I almost got a 4090 XG. That setup sounds amazing. It's unbelievable performance from what I've seen online. What's crazy is the Ally + XG 4090 isn't a crazy price either. I was just looking at 4090 laptops and they're more expensive then the Ally + XG, and I'd rather have dual functionality. Plus the thermals are a lot better when the CPU and GPU are completely separate (unlike most laptops that share a heatsink across both). Enjoy the setup man! :)

Thanks! :) I got it at BestBuy for $1,000 on sale. It shows it's usually $1,500 which is way to expensive IMO. But for $999 it's not too bad for the functionality. The other eGPU's I've had in the past that take actual desktop GPU's have been huge. This one really is something special. I think the USB port might be a common issue that isn't seen because most people aren't hooking up an SSD to the back. Hopefully they release a similarly prices 4070 or 4080 soon. My only other concern is if Asus is going to continue producing these and the XG Mobile devices. It seems they're always out of stock and I wonder if they're just testing it out and could drop it at some point. Also, I was wondering what your thoughts are on this style of video? I didn't write any scripts at all for it. I tried the more "just talk" approach. But I also think I might be rambling a bit too much and/or repeating myself 🤣

And for no script you did an excellent job showing this thing. Like an actual setting up going along and getting roadblocks just like in real life would. I wouldn't mind getting more of these at all! As for the xg mobile yeah at that price is not too bad thought it would be higher TBH. Yeah Asus should back up their stuff more! We're kinda left on our own. When I read scripts I feel like a robot 🤖🤣 There is a RTX 4090 version that has HDMI 2.1, but it's $2,000. Honestly if it went on sale for $1,500, and was in stock, I'd probably pick it up. It's a real bummer this 3080 one has a USB issue. I like everything else about it, but that flaw is too big to overlook.

@@Droideka666 Honestly if I were able to swap it I think the new one would have the same issue. I could be wrong, but I'd definitely be leaning more toward widespread. Just like with the SD Card reader on the Ally before Asus said it was "thermal related", I thought it's most likely a hardware issue. Man, hooking it up to the 4k OLED @ 120 VRR would be an amazing experience. The XG Mobile 6850M has HDMI 2.1, but I've heard it's more trouble than it's worth so I'd personally stick with the Nvidia eGPU's. I'll definitely still be doing all the same editing. I enjoy doing the benchmark videos, they just take a WHILE to make haha.

I got the Asus RoG Flow X13 with XGMobile NVidia GeForce 3080 bundle when it first came out and before the year was up I experienced the USB issues as well as the metal claws on the connector failing. Sent it in to Asus for service and they not only fixed the XGMobile USB issue but also the connector. Haven't had a problem since. You may need to send in the XGMobile for repair.

Hey Filterless, while running an XG Mobile do you think there’s any performance difference if you change your VRAM down to Auto or 4GB? This would give the Ally more RAM to work with which in my opinion it should help. Good video idea lol

Hey, yeah I'd set it to Auto if you're mostly playing in docked mode. That will give the system more RAM. I've even found Auto to work pretty well in handheld as well, so you might not need to switch it back and forth and can just leave it on Auto :)

@@CHiTO316 Hey, I would but I don't have the XG Mobile anymore. Since mine had USB issues I returned it. I also have a laptop that's really close in performance to the XG 3080. There won't be any performance impact unless the game is running out of system RAM, so Auto and 4GB would be identical in most games. Just a more intense game that can utilize 16GB's of system RAM would benefit from it being set in Auto.

This card has been a game changer for me. I play my ally more on my tv than handheld mode and been great making my games 4k 60fps for everything i have thrown at it. I have a 2tb upgrade in my console so dont have the usb issue. I feel going into its next gen Asus should do a bundle with the console and xg mobile and show it off could definitely have some big uptake.

I got an XGM 6850M XT myself. There were some hiccups at first but everything was all ironed out tho. I mainly got it cause I have their X16 labtop as well. So it made more sense in that way. It does only supply around a 20% boost from my X16 3060 but a bigger boost for the Ally of course. I will probably upgrade to the 4090 once it's on sale tho as I'm more of a green fan myself. 😊 I do have a 4090 rig I made several months ago. Hopefully you will get a working 3080. I would've went for that but it was more expensive at that time and it didn't have HDMI 2.1 like you said. The 3080 runs 4K better than the 6850M yet it only has HDMI 2.0. So strange. I got my 6850M for only $600 so it was a great deal.

$600 is a steal of a deal! I think I'll either get a 4090, or a 4070/4080 (if they make them). An XG Mobile definitely makes a lot of sense when both your laptop and handheld have it :) I think Asus did a really great job with it (even though I wish it wasn't a proprietary port).

You may have a defective XG Mobile. I run almost the same setup, XG Mobile 3080 to Ally with my XBox Controller plugged into the USB port. I'm also a huge Forza nut, and have not run into your issue while in Forza. Triple digit hours in Diablo 4, also have not had the issue where the ports die. I also have an SD card running in the SD card port of the XG Mobile. Have you tried switching the USB port? Individual USB ports themselves sometimes causes issues, for example on my desktop, one of the ports refuses to read any external HDs.

Hey, I have tried switching to different USB ports. An external 3.0 USB HUB allows it to run longer before disconnecting (as it limits bandwidth to around 500MB/Sec). It's a very strange issue. I'm wondering if it could even be that something is wrong with the Ally causing it to disconnect. Unfortunately Best Buy is now sold out so I won't be able to exchange it to test a new one. Glad yours is working though, it's one of the setups I've enjoyed the most.

I have the 6850MXT XG Mobile and I’ve never had that disconnect issue. Very early on in the Rog Allys life (I’ve had it since launch day) I did have issues with getting the XG mobile to connect at all due to software bugs with the software but that was fixed and now it’s been flawless.

I’ve been using an external SSD (Crucial X8 1TB) with the XG Mobile 3080 connected to the ROG alley for about a week with no issues so far. I’d definitely try to get another one.

Hey, is the enclosure a 10GB/s one? I noticed it lasted a lot longer when using a HUB that limited it to 3.0 speeds of around 400-500 MB/Sec. Glad yours is working though. The 3080 with the Ally is definitely one of my favorite setups I've had. And the whole setup can easily be thrown into a bag to take on the go, which is 👌

Not for nothing, but when you were using the xg-mobile in your fatal flaw setup, weren't you sending the video feed up and down the line (didn't have an external monitor plugged in, while when you just used your plain Hub the video signal wasn't going anywhere because it wasn't doing any graphical processing or display off-system? So that wasn't really an apples to apples, no? Although, as wide of a bandwidth that line should have with the full utilization of the PCIe port, you would think there wouldn't possibly be a bottleneck compared to a situation using the usb-c alone (unless you only got limited lane usage). Maybe how the firmware is currently configured to prioritize lane usage is janky once you add extra input signals and concurrent drive read/writes? I've been so busy, haven't tested my 3080 out yet after I nabbed it price-reduced like you, but seeing this I think I better put it through the paces sooner rather than later.

Thanks! And it does this when connected to an external monitor as well. On Asus' website for the xg 3080 they say "A separate USB 3.2 Gen 2 link adds 10Gb/s for the I/O hub and prevents peripheral traffic from impeding graphics performance.". The thing that is concerning is the other ports shutting off. I don't know of any situation where that should be happening. As an example I could plug 3 10GB/s hard drives into a HUB and it'll never disconnect from my Asus laptop. I won't get the full speed, especially if pulling from 2 drives at once, but it'll never turn the ports off or disconnect. To me it's a pretty serious issue as I believe it to be hardware related. The way I'd test it is running Horizon 5 off the drive as it's pulling data from the drive frequently and will let you know if there are hiccups with the USB port. Also if you have the xbox wireless adapter connected, sometimes the controller will stop responding for 1-2 seconds (without flashing), and that's another sign. Definitely let me know what you find on yours.

Hmm, that is interesting; makes sense that the usb lanes would be dedicated to peripherals---but then I have to wonder if it's still a bottleneck at the cpu once all comes back, peripherals and gpu data? Since it happens mid-game, I wonder if it's a memory load issue? Did you lower your assigned memory when you started using the gpu to free up what it's no longer using for integrated graphic processing? I'll stop hypothesizing and test today.

@@Jankylulu Definitely let me know if you find a portable gaming OLED one as I'd be interested in getting it too :) And I'm using the SD mostly. I love the Ally, but I play in handheld a lot and the battery life of the SD OLED is just too good. I also like the slightly bigger screen, the four back buttons, quick resume and Steam OS. I find it a lot easier to just pickup and play. But I don't play any multiplayer games that would have issues on the SD. And my entire library is already on Steam so it's really convenient.

bro , i have almost the same setup, except the g helper. i cant see 150w of the gpu, even though the cpu is around 20% usage.! i tried it on 2k res with ultra RT, on other games like elden ring, hogwarts legacy, spider man and call of duty, i get 80 to 110W only. all drivers r the last and everything is fine. what could be the reason

The usb-c port is for data only not video so keep that in mind. The 4090 is overkill for the Ally. If you had other flow devices then it might be worth it but I would still wait for a sale tho.

@ryanze26 ok . The usb c from the ally itself maximum bandwidth is also 10 Gbps . Its not realistic what you are asking for. Hence why they need to make a special plug just for the xg mobile to achieve fast bandwidth for that type of egpu. When they have the better epu (faster in bandwidth already there are youtubers compared the USB c to gpu vs the xg mobile ) . Why would they make a hub for usb4 to egpu ?

@@bboyalanleung123 USB4 is 40gbps and we can do Frankenstein Egypt for cheaper. We can have rtx4070super Egpu + enclosure in USB4 for 700. Compare it to xg mobile rtx 3080mobile priced at 1300 then many will think that proprietary xg port is more like business thing than technological advantage. At least that is my opinion. People can have different view, but for me if we can convert xg port to something like USB4 and multiple USB 3.2 20gbps, it will help budget mind like me, or maybe only me.. hehe

They have made it confusing. The 4090 is $1,999. The one you're seeing is most likely a 3080 or the 6850M. If you send me the link I can check it out. The only option I'm seeing on the 3080 is "Where to buy" and then a link to Amazon.

I have the AMD XG Mobile and my only real complaint is the lack of up to date drivers from ASUS. My Ally stays docked most of the time to it and I use it as my desktop until i head out, then it gets undocked.

Hey, I have wanted to create a tutorial on how to do it. What I'd recommend for monitoring the stats is GeForce Experience. They have an overlay that you can enable and choose the stats you want to see. The RTSS overlay is glitchy and doesn't work well. I had to keep fixing it when restarting and disconnecting/connecting the XG Mobile.

@@YelNatSttocS Hey, it'll only work on the Nvidia eGPU's. So the 3080 / 4090. I think the AMD Overlay would be the best option, I have a video here about it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/robPfoivebKZlck The FPS counter I'm using "looks" nice, but it's a bit of a pain to use and is primarily just used for benchmarks. I think the Asus monitor and/or AMD Overlay are better options for monitoring the stats. The AMD overlay should let you monitor all the stats you want on the AMD eGPU as well as the internal Z1 Extreme. Let me know if you have any questions about it and I'll try to help you out :)

It could be that I have a defective unit. However, I've seen this issue on other devices HUBs/Docks. Unfortunately I can't get a new one to test it since BestBuy is sold out.

Awesome vid,if you could figureout how yo fix the ramp up and down of xg mobile fans in idle that would be swell. I use ghelper with custom fan curves unticked for silent and balanced. In turbo i have custome fan curves enabled and set a static fan rpm from low tempartures until 50 celius however it still ramps up and down 😢 Note: from what i understood xg3080 has 3.2 GEN 1 which is 5gbps max speed. I find it easier to directly connect the ssd enclusre directly to the rog ally when doing a file transfer and then redocking.

Hey, for the fan noise try right clicking on the desktop and selecting "Display settings". Then scroll down and you should see "Graphics". Once you open graphics you should see something near the top that says "Change default graphics settings", click on that. Then you'll see "Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling" and it's probably On. Try turning it Off and restarting. This should stop windows from running on the GPU. And could help with the fan noise. If you're noticing stuttering in videos or the browser feels slower after changing this to Off, then it might be worth toggling back On. For the XG Mobile on Asus' website they say "A separate USB 3.2 Gen 2 link adds 10Gb/s for the I/O hub and prevents peripheral traffic from impeding graphics performance.". However they do state the USB ports themselves are "4xUSB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A". I've also benchmarked the drive and it is pulling well over 5Gb/s so I believe they are 10Gb/s total bandwidth. The thing is it shouldn't drop the other ports off. Even if I plug in a 10Gb/s drive to a much slower computer, it should just limit it to that speed without interfering with the other ports. For example I'm using a T9 drive which has Gen 2x2, allowing for 20Gb/s, but my Macbook only supports 10Gb/s. It's my primary drive I store all my footage and edit off the drive and it's never disconnected, nor have I had any issues with all the other devices I have plugged into the computer. And thanks :). Glad you liked the video. The 3080 is awesome outside of this issue and I'm pretty bummed I'm running into it. Even tried my Sandisk SSD which also causes the ports to drop :/

Do you ever feel CPU bottlenecked? I was getting horrendous stutter in BG3 act 3 and I doubt the XG mobile would have helped since gpu usage never went above 90% The fact that the ROG ally only has 16GB shared memory is also a bit concerning for longevity.

Will it damage Ally in long term? Ally got temperature 93-95 degrees with xg mobile! Even in low settings it goes minimal 89 degrees

I think leaving CPU Boost off would be the best option. That should reduce temperatures quite a bit while still giving you great performance.

I sudpect the problem is that It's only a half bandwidth PCI Express connection (8 lanes instead of 16), the GPU is saturating it, leaving nothing left for the SSD drive and any other devices connected to the ROG when data needs to be transferred over the bus, hence the disconnects.

Hey, that's what I was thinking too originally. However when looking up all the specs on Asus' website they say this "A separate USB 3.2 Gen 2 link adds 10Gb/s for the I/O hub and prevents peripheral traffic from impeding graphics performance.". So I'm thinking I have a defective unit OR it's something with the Ally. I can plug the drive directly into the Ally though with no issues.

All these enclosures use crummy, cut back laptop GPUs. Still better than the ROGs of course but these are NOT as powerful as their desktop namesakes.

Hey, this is the mobile version. The desktop cards are a LOT faster. However, this device has the PSU built in, and is slimmer and more portable than just a desktop graphics card. For what it is, it's a really great device (despite the USB issue I show in the video). I could have a defective unit though, but I'd imagine even if I was able to swap it the new one would have the same issue.

I've found that the 4090 mobile works pretty nice especially with their ROG portable display. Its def. worth the cost...

I'd imagine it would be able to play Cyberpunk at 4k without much issue with the 4090 attachment. I might get one in the future if it goes on sale and I'll definitely make a video on it if I do.

That z extreme won’t make difference for the 4090 trust me I was thinking of getting it until I did my research 3080 is the bread and butter you can run cypher punk on 4k with the 3080

Its very hard to obtain these non rx 4090 models. Those at least are under 1000€ with some luck. Ive bought a rtx 3080 16gb for 630€ for example

Hello! I don't know if anyone can help me. My xg mobile 3080 gets very hot (85°) even with a low workload of 40-50%. What could be the problem?

I've found that Asus seems to have it tuned that way. I believe you can manually adjust the fans (although I had to return mine because of the USB issue and they didn't have any replacements in stock). But mine would sit at around 86c no matter what power profile when gaming.

In the meantime I did some research and I discovered that there is an Asus tool called Gpu tweak III, which allows you to set the maximum temperature limit to 75 degrees, in this way I should also preserve the duration. I also opened the XG and the fan was really dirty (I bought a second-hand XG), the fan blades are very small. Anyway thank you for the reply, have fun with your Ally.

So, if I sum it perfectly, Silent Mode + 1080p/1440p is the way to go. Which is absolutely fine by me. Plus I don't play heavy games anyway, so it'll be a very nice experience. Thanks for the video man !

My 4090 /Ally works great! Only issue is with the connector not activating and deactivating when i want it too. Pockets Itching to see what the Z/X Flow experience would be like.

That is a beast! I heard the 4090 is a lot quieter than the 3080 as well. Hopefully the price drops. The CPU in the Ally is also an absolute beast so I doubt the laptops would net much performance gain. I have a 5980HX in my G15 and the Ally is about the same CPU score on TimeSpy.

I do think that it is really a good device. However, I it is wayyyyyyy too expensive for just a mobile GPU. You can get full blown PC that perform much better with that amount of money.

I got a 6850xt and there was not problems with it i was about to sell it cause of the noise but hey 1440p silent and performance or ok it think to run it on the games still plays alright just not the 200fps as the 4090 pc i have but kk i think... Not a 4k gpu but alright at 1440 games are playable🎉

And it only costs $300 more dollars than a 3080 laptop 😂 I fell into the handheld hype and got an Ally Extreme. I used it for a day and realized how dumb it was. If you want to make it decent you have to strap on battery packs, get external GPUs, etc That alone defeats the purpose of this device...portability So I exchanged it at Best Buy and got my $700 back. While I was there I decided to go see what they had as far as laptops. I came across an Asus Tuf laptop that had all new AMD components, 7k processor and 7600S GPU. Best part is that it was on sale for $749! Bigger screen, better battery life and the best part is that I can actually play my games at 1080p vs having to play at 720 I mean look at the goofy setup in this video. A spider web of mess to get less performance than a laptop that is cheaper By the time you get a Z1 extreme, upgrade the drive, get the external GPU and monitor you could get a $1300 laptop. The Ally makes zero sense
