Why is the Steam Deck community so hard on each other? Lol. It’s almost a year in already. No one needs any more videos about reasons to like or dislike a steam deck. The man fits a lot of adults today. We have some disposable money to play with, bought a hyped up new tech device, got some enjoyment out of it and sold it. It doesn’t end up like the Vitas , just in a desk drawer somewhere. It’s off into the hands of someone who may really want it. Possibly someone without a “Gaming PC” or without a major console. It’s totally fine. Valves most valuable asset here isn’t the actual Deck, but the software. SteamOS and Proton have the potential to actually rival whole consoles. That’s the diamond here.

@@Dhdgcvnnnfx I wouldn’t say it’s a total waste of money, it just needs to be marketed more towards real expectations. In 2010-2012 , Deck woulda been the godsend of gaming. That small window where ps3 emulation was good, yet anticheat and crossplay wasn’t really a thing. Today, in 2022/2023, the Steam Deck is good, but the developer side of gaming has gotten better. EAC is JUST annoying enough, online play is becoming more and more exciting , crossplay is becoming more and more appealing. It’s gotten to the point that Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo can spot any efforts from a Linux/Pc base almost a mile away and counter them. Sony has even cooperated with Microsoft and opened up their games for crossplay. They’ve moved the “fun factor” beyond Linux reach FOR NOW. Right now, there’s a cool designed LG handheld on commercials all over , and that only advertises streaming games. Of course it’s an Android system with Remote Play for PlayStation and Xbox. If it has any hardware power behind it , I think that device is gonna do good. It’s just simple expectations. It’s better to undercut its potential and stick a competitive price on it and let users be amazed at what you actually can do versus to over exaggerate its potential and have folks disappointed

I never played so much games as I’m playing since I got my steam deck. I get bored of being in my home office isolated from everyone with my eyes glued to my ganing computer. With the steam deck I can play on the couch next to my family, play for half an hour, put the gamr in stand-by and resume it later. It completelly changed my gaming habits.

I suffer from much the same thing that you talk about here. I purchased the steam deck last night, but refunded it today. It's an appealing device but upon reflection I realised that I really have no use for it and am just falling victim to consumerism once again. I have a rtx 3080 desktop with a great monitor setup which is my main platform and I also own a 3060 legion 7 laptop which I rarely play games on. I had also purchased a switch a while back and felt compelled to play it just because of the fact I paid for it. But it quickly got sold as it just wasn't making much sense to me to own one. I also own both next gen consoles which are collecting dust, although the dust shall be wiped clean when I get my hands on God of War Ragnarok. If I had to take a long train to work or if I travelled a lot I think a steam deck would be the perfect device, though. I realise that I am lucky to be in the position I am in to own these nice things but all you truly need is one system to play games on. For some that could be the steam deck, for others a console, and for those like me a PC. We shouldn't fall victim to consumerism as it leaves us always wanting more. I reckon that learning to appreciate what you have is more valuable than owning the biggest houses, the fastest cars, the latest technology, etc etc.

This is very fair. I don't have a deck yet, but it appeals to me as a device to help me seperate spaces. Currently my desk computer is for games/music production/web surfing/research/watching movies etc. It's a lot of time tethered to a desk. I quite like the idea of going to lay down on the couch (probably a mental health + to be away from desk) or taking it to a friends house. I don't have a lengthy commute or anything that the reviews talk about... I just want one.

Same, it is just the separation from my workspace that I like a lot. When I hold the steam deck in my hands, I know that I can only game on this thing and nothing else. But on a PC, I always have this guilty feeling that I could just do something more productive with it.

I also imagine that our desktop setups absolutely chew through our energy bills. Whereas a few hours on the steamdeck is likely nothing in comparison. I am painfully wary of energy efficiency at the moment in the UK, where our energy prices have spiked and will do so again come April 2023. Can i really justify this huge rig with dual screens? Probably not.

I'm heavily considering selling my Steam Deck. I recently bought an OLED television and hooked up my PC to it via display port, and I haven't looked at my Steam Deck for weeks. I came to the conclusion that I didn't even really want the Steam Deck, rather, I just wanted to escape being hunched over a desk to play games. Everything looks so amazing on my television, and since I never feel compelled to take a device as large as the Steam Deck outside, I kinda just don't see the value in having it anymore. Now, if the Steam Deck was pocket portable, that would be a different story, but if I'm gonna sit around my house playing games either way, the Steam Deck isn't really my go to. Cool device, if you want to escape your desk, but if that's all you want it for, there might be cheaper ways to achieve the same goal, and even get a better result.

This is why I sort of prefer the little emulation handhelds companies like Anbernic and Retroid make. As someone who has a gaming PC it's nice to have something you can actually stick in your pocket if you feel like it. The Deck, yeah it's handheld, but it's not portable, so I might as well just use my PC.

This I agree with, I have a Steak Deck for now and no gaming PC, but I have a Series X and use that all the time. I just found myself plugging my Steam Deck into my monitor inside for work and playing at a rubbish resolution. I could use the built in screen but it seems daft with a keyboard and mouse to do that. It's too big really to take out the house so is kinda a bit pointless to me.

I am selling mine tomorrow. I love the idea of it and it is an awesome device. But, for some reason I got consumer guilt from it. I never touch it compared to my other consoles. Mainly because I can play all the games on my PS5, or Switch. I thought it would be another great addition but I feel so guilty spending that money and it just sitting. So I feel better knowing that someone else will be able to enjoy it and love it a lot more. I also just wasn’t a big fan of how short the battery life was. Obviously its a literal PC so I understand. But, it kind of took away from my experience. I am genuinely so happy it has been so successful. I just do not need it because I have all the same capabilities with my other consoles. I wish I got the joy that so many others experience from it. I had the initial excitement but it wore off after a few weeks. I think if I had been a PC player and had my collection then I would have probably kept it. But, all the games I was interested in I either already had on my other consoles or just didn’t want to stomach up spending $60 on Steam.

The reality is that when I'm playing online game I'm on my PC and when I'm in bed probably reading a book on kindle or watching video/browsing on my android phone... So there is very little incentive to own a device for me at least when I'm not traveling. I didn’t regret, wanted to try, so I sold it for 900$ after one week. For me small display, small font, not such beautiful graphics as I got used to see on my rtx 3080, 30 and even 40 fps for me is not enough, my eyes are getting tired after such low fps, fast battery draining, really 1 hour with game F.I.S.T and 60fps - it is all what you can wait from Steam deck and if you want to play longer than 1 hour - you need powerful powerbank, something 65W from Baseus for extra 70$ and overall for comfort gaming more than 1 hour you have to connect: gamepad, powerbank and maybe monitor, it is not portable gaming with many compromises. Unstable working of non steam store (logout from epic game if you use Heroic or Lutris launcher after each reboot), for some non steam games you need uplay or origin installer and epic game will not install it, small buttons (comparing to normal gamepad). After a few evevning attempt to play in something I asked myself "what am I doing? Why I need this?" When I sold it and play again in F.I.S.T. on my PC I realized how many details I loose on Steam deck and 144 GHz... Maybe will buy second generation to try again.

I like this forum and respect all views regarding keeping or selling your steamdeck. Initially I bought a 256gb steamdeck to make extra dosh (sorry times are hard). And use profit to buy a next gen graphics card to beast up my gaming rig. However, out of fear of idiots scamming a sale decided to keep it. Man was that the best decision ever. Most time has been in Steamdeck 90% Vs pc rig 10%. Pc for AOE2, RTS. But steamdeck has been my goto Mass Effect legendary edition, stardew valley, grand theft auto. Simply cos one button press it's on in seconds, no pc+Mon+speakers to turn on. Lay on sofa comfy as for 2-4 hour pure gaming bliss. Electric bill is cheaper! Installed a 512gb micro SD PNY for £90. Also when steamdeck runs out of juice, it's time to do something else - pc use to suck my life away! Thank you Valve!!

I have multiple gaming PCs all the consoles and all the stuff in a well set up gaming den but truth be told I don't care to be tethered at a desk as long as I used to back in my day of heavy raiding in D2 and WoW. When I'm not working at my desk for 70% of the day I'm on the couch or the bed with my dogs while the wife is beside me watching TV. This is why the switch used to be my main console for a LONG time but when the steam deck came out it allowed me to play my PC games without being stuck at my desk. ALSO. whenever I'm traveling, waiting at the vet/groomers/drs apt/on a plane or even waiting on my wife for any reason I don't need to carry my gaming PC or laptop with me to play my PC games. So yeah - solid win

The reason I bought and am keeping my Steam Deck is that it servers multiple purposes for me. I had been looking for a good Linux tablet for quite a while and in Desktop Mode the Steam Deck is a pretty decent FlatPak machine. The input is a little clunky but the trackpads are very comfortable for mouse movements and after getting used to it duel trackpad typing. Software wise Desktop Mode is a bit rough as it is treated more as an add-on feature and often suffers from regressions with Steam Input, but generally it works well thanks to KDE Plasma. It has an impressive battery life and stays comfortable to hold for a long time, but the Deck is not built to have any standby functionality. As a gaming device I have found great usecases for the trackpads, gyro and capacitive sensors. This makes me able to play the games I was already playing on my desktop in a more comfortable way, namely Vintage Story and Okami benefit from the extra inputs. Part of the fun for me is trying to find mappings I like more with it and experimenting with Steam Input to play games that you wouldn't think would work on it. This combined with the optimised experience in Game Mode makes it a great experience as compared to PC, even for games I installed by other means. Another use I found for it was using it as a controller with all it's unique features over Steam Link. Either on my PC to play games with it's inputs or for quickly setting up a local multiplayer game using the media player attached to the TV. As I don't have any console besides the family Switch, it even fills this gap by streaming to the TV, but I usually prefer it's screen or my desktop's. Because the Deck does both these things well enough and because of how much fun tweaking and digging into SteamOS can be to me, the device was and is worthwhile for me. But if it wasn't as flexible and open as it is, I would have never bought it, as for just the Game Mode it's expensive and doesn't add much besides a sort of new Steam Controller. As you are not really interested in any of the usecases I found for it and thus doesn't add much to your setup, you selling yours makes sense to me.

I mean if it is just nice to hang out with friends and family playing games, probably with headphones, what's the point. Still not being social. Really even as a on the go device it misses. Battery life sucks. Much better options for mobile gaming. Steam deck is a fad. It's cool what it can do, but not a replacement for pc gaming. Bits asked what makes it cool. What makes it cool is that it is cool. Just because it is cool does not make it the be all end all.

@@smidlee7747 so I quite often use my phone and my razer Kishi with game pass streaming when I am waiting for my kids in the car after football or something, but that happens once or twice a week.

@@rrorge That’s a common scenario. That small amount of time waiting on kids to get out of school. But the Phone and a Kishi fills that space pretty quickly. Especially with Remote Play for PlayStation and Gamepass for XBOX

You could have used moonlight to stream to it . But yes I get your point. It’s a useless device if you are home.

@SpaceDiino true. I love the steam deck but it can be a lot of effort to get things working properly

@SpaceDiino I dont think this is hate, he's just stating that at some stages in life you must can't be bothered to be tethered to a desk to play your PC games. You know one thing I've never needed to take while I'm gaming since I got my steamdeck? Bathroom breaks... Just saying
