Steam Deck - Using a NTFS Formatted SD-Card

Mate, wanted to thank you for your clear and concise instructions to get the SD card to mount after a reboot. Been using the Steam Deck to play Destiny 2 on Windows and then SteamOS for everything else and have had absolute pain remounting and setting back up the Steam library every time I wanted to swap back to SteamOS. Thanks for this. Wanted a way to not have to swap between 2 512GB sd cards. Now I have all my Windows & SteamOS games on one 1TB card. Only issue is I have to go into Desktop Mode to mount the sd card to SteamOS every time I power it on. I followed the guide to a tee and assumed it's supposed to auto mount on SteamOS? No issues on the Windows partition. EDIT: My issue was resolved. My mistake: I thought hitting the Enter key was suffice to "activate" the script. Apparently all along I was supposed to "Save" by hitting Ctrl + S (then Ctrl + X to close) which I didn't realize until a redditor pointed that out to me. Hope this helps someone down the line.

oddly when doing this, I found that if I installed steam games in Steam OS onto the NTFS card, then windows wouldnt recognise the crad and wouldnt let me mount in Win 11. When I formatted it in a windows 10 PC then put it into win 11, then installed a steam game within Windows, then itworked fine on both

Anyone else face this error seems windows is forcing some permissions I disabled fast boot so not sure what else could be causing this: An error occurred while accessing 'deckSD', the system responded: The requested operation has failed: Error creating directory `/media/NTFS-GAMES' to be used for mounting /dev/mmcblk0p1: Read-only file system

Great video, but It didn't work for be at the begining because I've copied and pasted the command code from the description and the "/run/" in the mount point is missing. Could you correct it?

After I specify shutdown (all previous steps have been completed), Steamdeck no longer turns on and it becomes necessary to reinstall SteamOS.

I used this to mount an NTFS partition on my internal drive, but Steam (Linux desktop mode) won't let me add it as a storage option. It's worth noting that the Linux desktop Steam app has been updated since this video, so it's different. Any one encountered this?

*bump* yeah, same here. the SD gets mounted and is accessable, but it's nowhere to be found in steam and it just does nothing when you add it manually.

I've been doing this with my sd card for a while, but i wonder why speeds are way slower on ntfs than on ext4? even sometimes my deck will freeze for a bit while downloading a game. is this normal or am i a idiot

On my end I'm trying to create a steam library folder but it says it's read only. The file is edited correctly but I have some gamepass games in another folder on the same SD card, could this be causing issues ? Edit: figured it out, had to disable fast startup in power settings in windows where you choose what the power button and closing the lid does. Apparently fast startup locks NTFS drives in some stupid way that renders them read only unde Linux.

Works on my 64GB card. Thank You. BTW. When I try to remove my card on working steam, in Desktop Mode I receive admin password prompt. So I swith off my deck and remove my card manualy to use it on PC. Looks like steam is working fine without card too (but with that line in etc > fstab).

done this great setting, but I found reboot to gaming mode not able to auto mount SD card, it need to be back on desktop mode every fresh boot for mount SD, will there be any fix can help with this?

I didn't do any of this yet my deck uses my SD card for windows and steam os. Can even play the games downloaded from deck on windows... This just seems like a lot of work so please correct me if doing this does anything different?

hi there sir, followed your guide and was originally using the sd card for xb gp games, but now on the steam os i also want to use it as to install a few games my ssd almost full, but when i install a game from steam os ie resident evil 7 i get the "disk write error" already cleared the dl cache as one tip i read and restarted my deck but is still get same error, any tip? much appreciated ty

I'm not interested in dual-booting a windows system on my Steam Deck, I just want a convenient way to have my Steam Deck SD card formatted in ext4, but easy plug and play access to the file structure in Windows so i can use my SD Card Reader on my PC. I want to remove the SD Card from the Deck, plug it into a Windows PC to add files, and put it back into the Deck. Is there a way to do such a thing for free?

Hello. I have followed your steps but when I shutdown te device it stays on the boot logo. I have had to reimage my deck twice. Though I only have SteamOS installed. WIll this not work on SteamOS only?

Any chance you were able to resolve this? I only have SteamOS on the steam deck as well, but had windows installed on the SD card, but after following the instructions in the video, I get stuck on the boot logo too when trying to boot into steamOS, but I can still open windows on the SD card just fine.

@@andrewvanvliet9094 Hello. I have not at the risk of having to wipe my Steam Deck again if it fails.I have too many games installed now. I just connect the ext hard drive when I want to use it and mount it manually in desktop mode, but it does read it.

Thanks for the tutorial. Everything works except that I have no permission to delete or make new folders on my SD card. I can only move existing folders to my main drive. Do you know how I can give permission to be able to delete files on my SD card?

Can Xbox game pass install games to a BTRFS sd card I have mine formatted to BTRFS but when I try to install games from game pass to my sd card it does not allow me I was curious if I formatted ti NTFS if that would fix my issue ? Any ideas thanks

Thanks for the tutorial, it was very instructive. I was just wondering, is the BTRFS format better than NTFS ? I have been moved from after Q3 to Q3 2 days ago so i am hyped, and counting the days. I just got a 512gb WD SN740 2230 SSD from a laptop to swap the 64 gb SSD. It is a Gen 4 instead of a Gen 3 but it should work i hope.

from what I've heard BTRFS does a good job with compression and can help with load speeds on slow SD cards. if my SD card wasn't already full on NTFS I'd be tempted to try but I don't want to change now. I upgraded my 64gb to a 256gb (only gen3) the speed difference is crazy m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/fYGnk51_Z6uUbrc . running a gen4 in gen3 will probably mean it will runs very cool as it's not been pushed to the iimit so should really help thermals and keep it running cool and quiet, so good choice I reckon!
