I think the "why" might also be people who can't buy good PCs for games, so they can buy this and play almost everything. That way Valve gets more clients.
@firghteningtruth7173

Yeah, its to catch mobile users that would normally play a switch or even one of the older handheld systems/phone, but doubles as a system for someone who cant afford, or doesnt know how to wheel and deal on cl TO afford a decent gaming comp. Or, has no clue about any of it. A lot of my friends from the relative ghetto dont even consider a pc a gaming option. Instead, theyd rather pay 1000 over list or whatever craziness to get the newest playstation when in short supply. So it might be try to catch some of that audience too.

And there totally going to usurp Nintendo. I’ve always prefer Nintendo consoles over any other gaming company. The reason being that most of there consoles are handled focused. I really don’t enjoy playing on a console or pc. So Nintendo has always been the easy choice. However I was massively disappointed with Nintendo’s New switch model. It fails to keep up with the visual gaming aspects. Now that this mobile pc is available I’m definitely going to buy it.

@godminnette2

@@godminnette2 Which is bizarre. I’m thrilled but can’t help but ask what their game plan is here. They are no doubt losing money on the hardware when you compare this to the Switch
3 жыл бұрын
@@godminnette2 believe me, most people will buy and use it as-is, and this will pull a lot of developers back into the steam store. Remember, gaming stores competition in the PC market where steam was king before, has changed a lot over the last few years, and xbox with its app and native integration on windows, and the new windows 11 store is painting a dark future for valve if they didn't do anything about it. I also think this is a great play. Microsoft and others can be taking the PC away from valve, but no one is competing with switch so valve had a huge opportunity here, and they damn took it
@wickersticks
@wickersticks 3 жыл бұрын
@@HellNaw98 I think they are just confident that the majority of people will purchase their games off steam anyway even if they offer them the freedom. Which, by all game sale statics I've seen that's a fair bet Also by making it a open platform they will be encouraging modders and homebrew communities to jump from their vita's and onto their own platform making themselves a nice niche
@Ethereal184
@Ethereal184 3 жыл бұрын
I agree with you. They definitely want as many people as possible to be familiar with STEAM and the possible services they can have. I think this was a great game plan, especially when nintendo is the only player in this space. I forsee myself impulse buying a lot of indie games with this. Games I wouldn't bother to sit down at my desktop for, but if I'm hanging out on the couch with the Steam Deck and an hour to kill, I'll drop 5 bucks on a new indie platformer or rogue lite. It's smart. I mean who's going to buy a $1000 glorified Switch? But if you make it really competitive with the pricing of the Switch, suddenly you're poaching Nintendo buyers. If you're in the market for a Switch you'll definitely be cross shopping this. And if you're not already sold on Nintendo's exclusives, this thing is going to have a way better selection of games. Plus docking and using as a desktop is really killer. This is going to be hugely popular with teenagers and college students I would think.

@@Katzelle3 ...if and when they eventually release it... but the wait is painful. I'd be happy if it even where powerful enough to just do smooth 1080p at stable 60 fps with added AA in TV-Mode. Isnt DLSS something that needs to be supported by the game itself? Love the tech tough. Seriously what i just mentioned coupled with the oled for handheld mode would probably be what most people dream of (as it still keeps the console affordable) Maybe even keep it 720p but running reliable 60fps. I wonder if newer tech running at less workload is better for battery life that older tech running at 100% load.

I would say this device would need to be priced around 600 in order to make some small profit. 800 would be a more fitting spot but I’m not, and many others, going to buy a glorified switch for 800 dollars. However I will totally buy one for 400. They are trying to entice a new audience to buy there console, even at a loss, and will make up for those losses in software purchases. It’s quite genius

Bit of theory here backed up with a bit of personal experience: The market they are after is the large group of console players who haven't gotten stock on the next generations of console due to all the issues getting product on shelves. The type of people who can't spend 1k or so on a good computer. I don't think so, these 2 markets are different, I don't know of any console gamer who would invest in a portable device instead of an actual powerful console, their is aim is after pc gamers who are willing to give portable gaming a chance without having to switch to switch and be limited in the system capability and features, and the other target is switch owners who are willing to give pc gaming a chance if it was placed in a good form factor such as steam deck, u can watch the IGN podcast "NVC 569" for more info they discussed this in the beginning, consoler gamers audience is really kinda out of reach, but if any of them is willing to do the switch it can be a good option for them but don't expect a very high performance in AAA games, I'm mostly an indie gamer and this device is perfect for me, without running into fps drops like in the switch OR have to pay double or triple the price of the game on steam (1. Nintendo has no regional pricing and 2. they add to the price as a host for the game on their console) so this is a win win situation really, and a final thing I remembered, steam has very extensive customization to the controller which is kinda important to me as someone playing platformers using analog stick and I switch the input type of the analog to d-pad on steam for much better experience, the switch has non of this, also the cross save feature, how many games did I have to replay on the switch just to be able to continue where I stopped on pc, these things make the steam deck very appealing option for pc gamers but nothing is really specific for console gamers, would love to hear ur opinion on these points I made.

Agreed, I myself was thinking if I should go for the PS5 (I have taken a step back with sony after the PS store fiasco). Sadly I don't think I will be able to get my hands on one for a while.

I doubt this is specifically a response to PS5/Xbox unavailability. They would have had to start development of this well before those shortages became so well known. But I do think this is a play to bring traditional console gamers into Steam world. I, as one example, just don't play on PCs. I have a decent computer that I use for photo/video editing, and I even have a number of games sitting in my steam account that I bought in a moment of weakness during a steam sale. I just have no desire to game on a PC, and prefer consoles. This is tempting though and I could totally see myself justifying this and putting off a PS5 purchase for a while.
@jellevm
@jellevm 3 жыл бұрын
I think it also targets former PC gamers, as they fit the same category pretty much. They can't/won't spend a ton of money on a gaming PC but don't feel very compelled by a console either. the "why" is an interesting question. But I think the answer is simple: because Gabe wanted it? it looks like this was a situation like at the end of the HL Alyx development, where the flat hierarchy of the company had to be lifted to make people keep working on this project. I really think Gabe is the force behind all these hardware development, if you listen to interviews with him he is convinced that games as a medium dont innovate enough anymore, so you have to change the way the games are played, thats why they invested in VR so heavily.

@@confusedbadger9647 Yeah that doesn't fly. Those people aren't scared off by the huge amount of things they need.... they just go buy a pc at best buy, or order a prebuilt. The market for this device is as follows "hand held gaming enthusiasts who don't care about playing switch exclusives and have a large steam library, or want to run emulators to play old console games on handhelds". I think you are going to find that niche mostly already owns a gaming pc, and the niche of hand held gaming in general isn't very big. Eh, Stadia is the trend we're eventually heading to. Just look at Xbox Game Pass (which would also work on the Deck I would think too since you can basically get it on nearly any device with an internet connection). Maybe we're not fully, technically, ready for that just yet. But someday you're going to have games that run entirely on a server, and you'll only need a device with an internet connection to play. And it might even get to the point where for a AAA title that'll be the ONLY way you can play. Like if you've got a game that is essentially running a supercomputer, and has a billion graphics cores, you'll only be able to experience that on a server. Which there's good and bad to that. I think it'll make gaming more accessible to people who can't afford high end hardware. But I loathe to cede ground to always on internet. But then we're already getting there as it is.

So if you have to buy the games, AND pay for CPU time, why not just own your own hardware?

It's actually not that bad of an investment, it's just that $400 always seemed expensive for a console but considering this thing is an actual computer it's actually a cool knick knack to try. While I do recommend a Laptop or building your own PC (not in an elitist fashion where prebuilts come from the devil), the market is extremely inflated and will probably stay that way for a while. Dave even mentioned that Steam may be losing money on this per sale, but making it back via software, so it's a pretty solid deal and nowadays you don't need much to run a fun game. When I first saw the tweet about this from Steam I thought it was kind of lame, mostly because I saw it as a handheld console which I personally have zero interest in. But the fact that it can be docked and used as a mini computer, that completely changed my mind. It's a $400 (+cost of additional storage) basically at the price point of what a DIY PC would be with similar specs. Sure it's powered by an APU and upgrades will pretty much be limited to the storage down the line, but the hand held portability would likely outweigh the rest of the cons for so many people, especially console players who are looking to get their feet wet with PC. Looking forward to this 👍

How powerful is it compared to graphic cards
@GhostintheShellOST
@GhostintheShellOST 3 жыл бұрын
@@randomdudeontheinternet1904 Both this and the PS5 uses the same architecture, AMD RDNA 2. PS5 is said to be 10.3 TFLOPs and the Steam Deck 1.6 TFLOPs. Hopefully we'll get actual benchmarks to compare this with PC graphic cards, but for now, that's all we get. Also FidelityFX Super Resolution could help quite a bit with higher resolution output when docked. Worst case scenario, this thing is probably really good for decoding video streams when cloud gaming.

Yeah. This all started with Win 8. MS tried to go after Steam by pushing their own walled garden store. Valve was like "Fuck that"- Hence, we got SteamOS, Steam Machines, the Steam Controller, Proton, and now, the Steam Deck.
