Yeah, its to catch mobile users that would normally play a switch or even one of the older handheld systems/phone, but doubles as a system for someone who cant afford, or doesnt know how to wheel and deal on cl TO afford a decent gaming comp. Or, has no clue about any of it. A lot of my friends from the relative ghetto dont even consider a pc a gaming option. Nintendo: We can't put a new powerful chip in the Switch for $400. Valve: *Cough*
@friendlyfriday34453 жыл бұрын
They technically can’t because the console has to be priced up higher than 400 in order to break even. There selling this device at a greater loss. One of the team members at the interview basically said selling this console for 400 is super painful. I would say this device would need to be priced around 600 in order to make some small profit. 800 would be a more fitting spot but I’m not, and many others, going to buy a glorified switch for 800 dollars. However I will totally buy one for 400. They are trying to entice a new audience to buy there console, even at a loss, and will make up for those losses in software purchases. It’s quite genius
@readyforlol3 жыл бұрын
@@friendlyfriday3445 Every gaming console on the market is sold at a loss. They make their money back selling games on their gated-off store and with exclusives. Bit of theory here backed up with a bit of personal experience: The market they are after is the large group of console players who haven't gotten stock on the next generations of console due to all the issues getting product on shelves. The type of people who can't spend 1k or so on a good computer. (especially now with GPU prices) I have plenty of friends who fit this that are on the PS4 only because they haven't had the ability to buy a PS5 or a PC yet for various reasons.
@Dclawspker3 жыл бұрын
Exactly
@zer0legend1093 жыл бұрын
I don't think so, these 2 markets are different, I don't know of any console gamer who would invest in a portable device instead of an actual powerful console, their is aim is after pc gamers who are willing to give portable gaming a chance without having to switch to switch and be limited in the system capability and features, and the other target is switch owners who are willing to give pc gaming a chance if it was placed in a good form factor such as steam deck, u can watch the IGN podcast "NVC 569" for more info they discussed this in the beginning, consoler gamers audience is really kinda out of reach, but if any of them is willing to do the switch it can be a good option for them but don't expect a very high performance in AAA games, I'm mostly an indie gamer and this device is perfect for me, without running into fps drops like in the switch OR have to pay double or triple the price of the game on steam (1. Nintendo has no regional pricing and 2. they add to the price as a host for the game on their console) so this is a win win situation really, and a final thing I remembered, steam has very extensive customization to the controller which is kinda important to me as someone playing platformers using analog stick and I switch the input type of the analog to d-pad on steam for much better experience, the switch has non of this, also the cross save feature, how many games did I have to replay on the switch just to be able to continue where I stopped on pc, these things make the steam deck very appealing option for pc gamers but nothing is really specific for console gamers, would love to hear ur opinion on these points I made.
@bvgreui3 жыл бұрын
Agreed, I myself was thinking if I should go for the PS5 (I have taken a step back with sony after the PS store fiasco). I like PC gaming but the investment to get one is high, coincidentally my laptop is starting to die. For me this is a perfect opportunity to start finally playing the games in my steam library, while also not needing to buy a new laptop. Sadly I don't think I will be able to get my hands on one for a while.
@danh27163 жыл бұрын
I doubt this is specifically a response to PS5/Xbox unavailability. They would have had to start development of this well before those shortages became so well known. But I do think this is a play to bring traditional console gamers into Steam world. I, as one example, just don't play on PCs. I have a decent computer that I use for photo/video editing, and I even have a number of games sitting in my steam account that I bought in a moment of weakness during a steam sale. I just have no desire to game on a PC, and prefer consoles. This is tempting though and I could totally see myself justifying this and putting off a PS5 purchase for a while.
@jellevm3 жыл бұрын
I think it also targets former PC gamers, as they fit the same category pretty much. They can't/won't spend a ton of money on a gaming PC but don't feel very compelled by a console either. And former PC gamers, like me, would already have a ton of games on Steam, which makes this way more attractive.

@andmicbro13 жыл бұрын
Eh, Stadia is the trend we're eventually heading to. Just look at Xbox Game Pass (which would also work on the Deck I would think too since you can basically get it on nearly any device with an internet connection). Maybe we're not fully, technically, ready for that just yet. But someday you're going to have games that run entirely on a server, and you'll only need a device with an internet connection to play. And it might even get to the point where for a AAA title that'll be the ONLY way you can play. Like if you've got a game that is essentially running a supercomputer, and has a billion graphics cores, you'll only be able to experience that on a server. Which there's good and bad to that. I think it'll make gaming more accessible to people who can't afford high end hardware. But I loathe to cede ground to always on internet. But then we're already getting there as it is.
@seahyx1203 жыл бұрын
@@andmicbro1 plus with 5G internet and the like, it's all coming together. I predict we will see this in full force in 10 years. Handheld gaming consoles that can stream triple A titles in smooth 120hz, and light and thin enough to beat the switch.
@C02Equinox7633 жыл бұрын
@@andmicbro1 There are several issues with Stadia and the like. 1. As you say, you need a good quality, always on connection. This is impossible for MOST of the globe currently. Competetive gamers will always prefer local for less input lag. 2. Those services require you to already own the games... So if you have to buy the games, AND pay for CPU time, why not just own your own hardware?

It's actually not that bad of an investment, it's just that $400 always seemed expensive for a console but considering this thing is an actual computer it's actually a cool knick knack to try. While I do recommend a Laptop or building your own PC (not in an elitist fashion where prebuilts come from the devil), the market is extremely inflated and will probably stay that way for a while. Dave even mentioned that Steam may be losing money on this per sale, but making it back via software, so it's a pretty solid deal and nowadays you don't need much to run a fun game. When I first saw the tweet about this from Steam I thought it was kind of lame, mostly because I saw it as a handheld console which I personally have zero interest in. But the fact that it can be docked and used as a mini computer, that completely changed my mind. It's a $400 (+cost of additional storage) basically at the price point of what a DIY PC would be with similar specs. Sure it's powered by an APU and upgrades will pretty much be limited to the storage down the line, but the hand held portability would likely outweigh the rest of the cons for so many people, especially console players who are looking to get their feet wet with PC. Looking forward to this 👍
