There are SO many games I bought years and years ago that I just couldn't justify sitting at a PC and playing for hours. The deck has opened up so many options and I hope the increased sales for that very reason justify more iterations of the hardware until it's at its pinnacle. Valve is in a unique position where they can break even on the product itself as long as they profit on software purchases. That's why they can make this thing so affordable.
@PakoSt

Good video and tight editorial as usual! Great job, Juan! There is part of the conversation that appears you've avoided and that is longevity. The Steam Deck will under all circumstances remain operational regardless when Valve stops official support. The device will still be able to run up-to date software and security patches a decade from now and beyond with minimal barrier to entry for the users. You are well aware of the short software support lifespan, the limitations of official and community driven solutions and heavy reliance on services for any current smartphone to have basic functionally. Preserving the games on Android is next to impossible. Major changes to system behavior between versions, inability to get the game executables at all through most distribution channels (technically you can if they are on the device but with heavy caveats) and so on. The Deck is missing entirely photo and video capture on its own. A very important win for the smartphones. The low barrier for entry with the Deck is where that thing shines. 64GB is 350GBP offering the same experience as the higher tier versions - sd card is a must for sure but even then the entry point is at most close to 400GBP without comprise to the experience. Looking at the long term perspective as of how Valve acts within the ecosystem and how it changes it is amazing. Comparing that to the actions (or inactions) of almost every company involved in shaping the smartphone ecosystem is a stark and contrasting image. Apologies for grumpy evening thoughts 😁 Enjoy the gadgets and use them to their fullest 😁

Appreciate the perspectives on either service and the value arguments for/against both. As I get older, my gaming needs are becoming more relaxed; more compartmentalized, in that my needs are narrowing or simplifying. The SteamDeck, while a fuller solution, offers more than I feel I'd need. A robust Android offering, a jack-of-all-trades with 6 inches or more in screen dimensions and that number in GBs for RAM, sufficiently addresses my needs for local and cloud gaming, with or without peripherals. That and portability. Would I notice the SD's weight? Love the pragmatic views you bring to the table. And the delicious snark.

I agree, his realistic and pragmatic views are a breath of life, in a sea of low-effort reviewers. I especially liked his points about budgeting. You can sneak in a Valve Steam Deck purchase by simply downgrading your Phone's purchase. We can even put them into categories: A) Phone B) Pocketable Small Console C) Portable Large Console In category A, you can have many options ranging from: Samsung S10+, Samsung A52-S, OnePlus 8 Pro, ASUS Zenfone 9, Sony 5 mk iv, Samsung S22 Ultra, ASUS ROG 6 Pro, iPhone 13 Mini, iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 14 Max. Those are just some notable examples. In category B, you have options such as: Miyoo Mini, RG 351p, RP2+, and RP3. In category C, you have options such as: AYA Neo Air Plus i3, VSD 64GB, AYN Loki 128GB, AYN Loki 256GB, VSD 256GB, VSD 512GB, AYN Loki 512GB, GPD Win 4, GPD Win Max-2.
@ekinteko
@ekinteko Жыл бұрын
In my view, best option would be to get: A1) Samsung S10+ with 512GB microSD card B1) ...replace this category with Razer JungleCat C1) Valve Steam Deck 512GB or you could get: A2) iPhone 13 Mini B2) Retroid Pocket 3 C2) Valve Steam Deck 64GB or there is also: A3) ASUS Zenfone 9 B3) Miyoo Mini C3) GPD Win Max-2 ...so you can mix and match the various options, and balance out your budget. And if you spend the time, you can get the A1B1C1 category to give you great gaming experience wether you're bringing a backpack, or just pocketing your setup anywhere on the go.

I mean while it's true I just don't see many games I'd wanna play on my phone like most of the games that you'd want to use a controller on are on other platforms and the ones that are exclusive to phones aren't made for controllers like 90% of the time. Like the most I'd wanna do with a phone is probably load it up with emulators and other games that I can play elsewhere. It's that and the fact that I need to keep my phone alive in case of an emergency to where I can't justify it. I'm not saying that this will suit you better but what I do is just have games on your phone that don't rely on your controller like I have the old Pokemon games on an emulator and more casual games in case of an emergency but if I'm anticipating taking the train or taking a flight, I'm bringing my switch. I can fit the thing in my pocket or at worst a small bag.

The only reason I play mostly on mobile over PC is simple. Time logistics. I usually have small gaps of time in my day where I can sneak in like 1 fight in Punishing: Gray Raven, or one or two songs in Project Sekai. Not sit down and PC game mad hard like I could do back in middle school. That and both of those games have insanely high skill ceilings so whenever I play other games I'm thinking "I could be improving at Project Sekai right now". But all that is an anecdotal me problem. PS: I forgot to mention, literal energy levels. By the time I do have time to play something for longer sessions, I literally don't have enough energy to game mad hard. But again, I can only speak for myself.

What mobile games lack is better support for peripheral controllers. It should be standardized, like when USB or Bluetooth controller is connected, Android ahould allow gaming with it. I will give example of current support. Android supports mouse, and it will work in general mobile interface, but if you run a game, mouse does not work in the game. Even in simple games where you have to point & click. Currently support for peripheral controllers is implemented by the developer, so... Yeah few of them invested in that direction.

This is a great discourse on the portable gaming experience. After all, it is about what you'll bring if you want to be portable. I'll still get a SteamDeck over a brand new shiny "gaming phone" though for my mobile gaming needs. What I think is important; is to have games having 'cross-play' and 'cross-save' features properly baked in. I don't see many "big name title games" that have both crossplay AND cross-save, but there are quite a few small titles that have both, and I think it is worth looking into their playerbases and getting a feel whether playing on a steam deck or a mobile phone is a better experience for them.

It's not a limitation of the phone, it's a limitation of the market. @SomeGadgetGuy
@SomeGadgetGuy Жыл бұрын
Well that's why I framed this as a total mobile strategy. If you have steam deck, do you ONLY have that, or do you ALSO have a phone with you too? The 64GB deck is a great starter buy, but the Steam Deck shines when you can reliably install games on faster storage AND utilize a memory card for ROMS and Media. It's nice having the lower cost option, but the full potential of a Deck is realized with a bigger SSD. It's not difficult finding a phone like the Blackshark4 or RM 6R for around $500, and you would have a gaming device and a phone in one purchase. Matching that, someone would need to carry a $100 phone with a base model Deck.

There is no doubt that smartphones and switch is more portable while steam deck can get uncomfortable because the controller is no wide and the length on it is close to a laptop size and the biggest problem is that the controller isn't removable and if gaming mobile gives us like we can install windows but not natively like we can on steam deck if we can install it natively their is no doubt that gaming phones would destroy steam deck as more and more manufacturers start to add controller support

Anything RM8 Pro & above trumps the Steam Deck - graphically & power-wise. And granted the Steam Deck has better default ergonomics, you have more options with RM like Razer Kishi, Back Bone, GameSir & many others. Red Magic is better honestly.

For someone who still owns the OG GameBoy all the way to the PSP 3000, mobile gaming has always been a part of my life. Unfortunately, after being delayed several times for the Steam Deck and waiting over a year, I decided to cancel my order. At this point I'll wait to see if a 2nd gen comes out. For now, I'll keep using my phone and Switch for all my mobile gaming needs.

Noooo you messed up canceling that reservation. The production spiked up tremendously. I understand though, I've waited 1 year and 7 weeks for my email. What makes me don't mind the wait is because I usually buy new console a year after it's been released. The newer steam deck is has a better manufacture. Also if you reserve it again, you can still get it this year. However, if you're happy with mobile gaming, shiod it's still a great platform for gaming.

See this is why I love this channel. Phones these days are IMMENSELY powerful pocket computers that are terribly under-utilized. This comparison just drives home the fact that phones have come a looooong way and can almost catch up to portable computers in terms of processing power. But i think we are forgetting one key distinction here and that is power consumption. Phones absolutely demolish PCs when perf/watt is concerned and that is even after the fact that phone chip makers have been slacking off a bit

I stream my gaming rig to my iPhone pro 13 (OLED) and use an Xbox elite 2 controller. I find that set up pretty comfortable. And I can remote pilot my rig at home using my phone with Magiclight anywhere I’m at with a WiFi connection. The only advantage I can think of with the Steamdeck is that its limited cpu can be utilized in situations where there’s no Wi-Fi connection.

Agreed, I nearly bought a steam deck but most my game collection is on Xbox or switch. Remote play and Xbox works for my triple A games and I can take to switch oled on trips where internet could be an issue. Also The screens on pro level iPhone and IPads are infinitely better.

@@Subvenio its different once your too busy for console gaming. I had all the time in the world before but with work and a family now barely even have time to use the switch yet alone ps4. Basically been emulating on android (I would do iPhone as well if it wasn’t such a terrible os for that) and that’s been satisfactory but this guy would be crazed to think steam deck does worse than android on emulation. You can’t emulate ps3 or Xbox on android like you can on steam deck yet alone switch at least well enough or GameCube stabile enough. Steam deck has emulation covered idc about that pc stuff cause even tho it does that decent most people have been using it for emulation since it’s good at that. I even see snapdragon gen 1 throttling worse than older chips with emulation like GameCube isn’t that stabile while a15 is seen doing well even with demanding GameCube titles like star wars but then again too much of a headache on ios

Valve is the God King of support, even surpassing Apple. That said, I share my sentiments with the other guy in the comments. I’m in my 30s now and feel that cloud gaming and a controller on my phone works pretty well. I cycle between Android and iOS. I’d say iPhones are a bit better in this department compared to Androids, but love my Pixel 7 for Xbox Cloud. I’d buy the other games on iOS though since you have the added benefit of playing on the iPad with a controller.
