I watched so much of your content when I first got my Steam Controller, so thank you! I love the Steam Deck controls. I haven't used the track pads as much as I wanted but that's because I haven't had as much time to dig into the interface and I haven't found a good game to play to utilize them. The controls feel natural to me for the most part.

Having picked up a Steam Controller after getting a Steam Deck, I immediately noticed how comparatively imprecise the Steam Controller's trackpads are. The pressure sensitivity with clicks emulated by haptics was a genius improvement, with how the click point can be adjusted in software or even how the pad pressure can be mapped as a trigger. I am thinking of attempting to map the left pad pressure to brake, to use the left trigger as a clutch pedal and the right pad as the manual shifter in a driving sim, for when I pick up such a game that supports this. When emulating DS games on my Deck, I hold the device sideways and use the pad as the button cluster, which works surprisingly well and feels good too. Instead of making the pad press even softer, you can make it activate on touch, which is as light as you can get. When I played Vintage Story on Deck I used flickstick with gyro and navigated the interface by gyro mostly. Referring to later in the video, I use both capacitive stick tops to control the gyro and shift the input mode, the latter for making the immersive mouse mode work. I plan to re-create this layout for playing Better than Adventure!, which is a modification which has replaced Minecraft for me, for which I host a server. After feeling them on Steam Controller I fully agree with the removal of the duel stage triggers, having them feel like linear key-switches with a hard bottom-out now feels much better to me. I disagree with the Steam Controller feeling cheap, it's light but quality, aside from a sharp edge near the bumpers. I have found that my Deck's plastics do get a tad oily, but it lacking glossy surfaces help. What makes the Deck's back buttons amazing is that they work best by pushing up and can be used as a jump or spring/sneak modifier comfortably. To me the new Steam Input interface is a massive upgrade, but this is from learning it first and generally being able to navigate these interfaces quickly. It lacks the clear overview but advanced settings are much easier to reach and the general lay-out makes more sense to me, opposing Nerrel's stance on it. Now there is a way to change the default Desktop Configuration and you can use presets to set your own 'defaults' that are quick to switch to. For me the Deck's ergonomics are near perfect after getting used to it and figuring out how to hold it. A large part of this is letting it sit deeper in your palms and facing more forwards than you would expect from traditional controllers. The design works but it's one of a kind so you have to ignore what you are used to from normal controllers. Additionally, the Steam Deck can be used as a Steam Controller already, by running the Steam Link flatpak on it as a non-Steam app. This approach is more reliable and flexible than using SteamOS's built-in steaming functionality and is how I use my Deck at my desktop.

I don't know who's idea was to put both trackpad and stick, but it was brilliant. You can easily play PC only games like Stalker, where mouse control is essential and won't work woth sticks. Yeah, it's not as comfortable as with mouse and keyboard, but still more comfortable than any other portable devices. I really enjoying it. I can aim more accurately and navigate in inventory without issues. And if you need less accurate input in games like Witcher, Elden Ring, GOW, Brutal legend, etc., you can use sticks instead. It just works. Now I want same controller for consoles. I hope Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo will notice this feature and add trackpads on their controller or make special verisons of their gamepads with trackpads.

Written through a translator. Trackpads without good software to customize them have little functionality. And the companies you described don't know how to make good software. So even if they add trackpads, it will most likely be like a primitive touchpad like a laptop or legion go.

Perhaps a controversial opinion, but I feel like trackpads should have replaced right analog sticks years ago. First-person games have never felt good on controllers to me, no matter how many bandaids they try to throw at the problem like aim assist and such. It would also make porting mouse-heavy games to consoles much easier than it currently is.

I'm another Steam Controller power user who has had the Deck for a while now. I still VASTLY prefer the Steam Controller over Neptune (the name of the built in controller on the Deck)... for many reasons. I'll not list them all though, to prevent this being an essay. Suffice to say, I view Neptune as being several steps backwards from the Steam Controller in controller design as concessions for normies. Thats not an inherently bad thing and I do think that its better than the sony layout, but as an enthusiast who wants the unadulterated "dual trackpads as primary inputs" experience the Steam Controller remains king. I'd very much rather prop up the Deck on a table and bluetooth my sc to it versus using Neptune. All the Deck has really done for me is confirm I still really want to see a SC v2 that retains the layout of v1 (the nice large round pads in their proper locations; the dual stage triggers) but has 2 more grip buttons that *squeeze* to activate and *NOT* push in to activate (I highly disagree with the Decks back buttons being objectively better) as well as all the under the hood tech spec improvements (newer higher specced gyro and trackpads, force sensing on the pads instead of the physical click, higher polling rate, capsense for the SINGLE left stick). Basically an actual v2 with improvements, not a full on re-imagining like the Neptune.
@jdedwards9208
@jdedwards9208 2 жыл бұрын
That's a good point about the squeeze vs push activation about the back buttons, I like both but I suppose that just comes down to preference. I would love to see a proper trackpad-focused Steam Controller II from Valve, but I do think it's less likely than a controller that has perfect feature parity with the Deck- though making it affordable and comfortable to use with your hands closer together would be a challenge so who knows. A controller with swappable parts would be neat. I wish Steam Controller fans were a large enough voice for Valve or a third party company to cater to and create another proper controller, but I'm just glad I like the Deck's controls and that the pads are fine for me.

They really could just make stickers for the trackpads. I've seen trackpad covers that still allow for full trackpad functionality so there's no reason why someone can't make a sticker that gives you the cross indent on the trackpad, one that's removable and replacable even.

I do miss the dual stage triggers on the steam deck because I used them a lot on the steam controller. In FPS games that use one of the triggers for firing, I would map that trigger to only fire when I bottom out and hit the switch while the analog portion of the trigger would act like what some gaming mice have and call a "dpi clutch" to slow down the movement of the camera - so that I can flick the camera around faster, when I am NOT in a firefight, but when I am actually aiming at something, I'd have more precision.

you can mod the steam deck to have them! Someone made a 3d printed thing you install internally on the trigger that has a tactile switch, so you get that restistance and button clikc feel. The problem with the double click triggers is for most games, that is not useful and may present a problem with accidental clicking plus, is a thing that could go bad inside of the controller over time faster than the other options. Though many people would be okay with buying the replacement, opening up their steam deck, and fixing it; valve wanted to sell the steam deck to everyone from casual gamers to pc gamers with thousands of dollars spent on their steam accounts. From a business stand point the steam controller sold abysmally, with valve having to sell of their supply for 5 dollars because of how bad it sold. Also valve did get sued because of some of the functions so maybe they just wanted to forget some things. .

What do you mean by the back buttons are better? Sure there's two more but they're clearly worse. With the controller they're really easy to click wherever you want to click them from right at the very edge to just off the very center of the back but with the deck it's significantly more difficult to click them on the edge to the point where I've made a concious effort to change where I press them. I've seen several other people make this complain about the decks back buttons as well they're just not as well positioned to lever onto the actual button making it a lot easier just to press over the button rather than use the paddles.

I have owned my steam controller for over 5 years and think it's one of the best accessories for my pc, I remember the CAD puck mouse and rate the steam controller as just as game changing. I had no skepticism when getting my steam deck as to the control usability but I have one complaint. The L/R 3&4 buttons on the bottom back are sot suited for my hand when playing casually as in leaned back in a couch or in bed, and I used L/R 3 on the steam controller A LOT especially for driving games, so much so it took me years to play forza from the Microsoft store because I was so used to using them as shift paddles and Microsoft made it virtually impossible to use anything but an Xbox controller, So I just didn't play it until someone gifted me an Xbox controller, but that is a testament to the awesomeness of the steam controller. Alas, I can't use them as easily on the deck, maybe if I sit rigid all serious like, but if I want to do that I go sit at my desk. For me to hit those buttons comfortably I have to use a claw grip on the sides and I'm supporting the thing by its side edge in the middle of my hand so my thumb and fingers can move freely and it just feels awkward and lacks support, I get they had to find a middle ground with hand size and portability, and my hand size isn't middle ground I guess. Still love my Steam Deck but that one little thing dictates that I can't really play driving games on it natively without an external controller.

I would have had to import it, but it sounds like a really great controller for a lot of use cases. 11:00 The back buttons got Valve into trouble by SCUF (patent infringement on their patents on back buttons) and it's likely the reason why we can't get them again. I'm guessing Valve is paying for the back button support on the Steam Deck now and I'd love to see them bring a Steam Controller 2 with the current layout of the Steam Deck.

You can actually change the desktop configuration. You just have to open up steam on desktop and go to controller settings and then desktop controls. I don't think you can do it for game mode menus but at least the desktop can be made better

I've been playing with my Steam deck but I haven't actually played any first person shooters so I can't really say yet. From the few times of messed around with the trackpad it seems like it's too easy to accidentally press it.

for the next controller they should replace the 4 buttons on the front the xyab with a joystick so we have two then put the buttons around so between the joysticks one up and one down and one to each side of the joysticks then allso another set of buttons on the back of the controller like it is on the steam deck

For me personally the steam deck trackpads have an uncomfortable position. When I use it for more than 20 minutes my hand starts hurting. I like using the trackpad way more than the stick for a lot of games but the position is just too awkward. I don't have a steam controller but I really wanna try one to see if that's better. I wish the trackpad and stick were switched on the SD.

@@joseandresjulienbarriere8786 The Steam Controller is fun legacy tech but the recent improvements to gyro control in Steam has made the trackpads obsolete for camera control in my opinion; you can get mouse like precision from a Dualsense on PC with high sensitivity. I don't understand why a lot of controller companies don't stand for steam controllers, they only release sticks I don't think the developer knows how important the touchpad is in fps There's a real game mania at the steam company Other companies lack something. Even if there's one or more touchpad, it doesn't click... If you could really use your brain to create a pad that sells well... please listen to the consumers!!! A year later, only the pads are still coming out without improvement...
