I saw someone else saying that this thing most likely exists to help Valve grow the presence of Steam in Japan. A lot of games work with an Xbox controller, and since Xbox’s presence is basically nonexistent in Japan they decided to work with a local company to make a controller that functions like an Xbox one. The guy was also saying a lot of the same things you did where that company’s controllers aren’t outright bad, but they aren’t good either. They’re in the awkward middle ground where they’re functional, but feel cheap. He was also saying that this isn’t an indication of Valve making a Steam Machine 2 or a new incarnation of their weird controller (I remember having that contorller. Not sure if we still have it. I think the thing might not have worked, so we got rid of it. I’ve heard the people who like that controller really like it). If they were to dip their toes back into the console market they’d most likely make a controller that’s basically a more compact version of the Steam Deck’s controls.

I agree. Seems like Valves entry to the Japanese market. And the Japanese economy isn't the greatest, so that is why the controller is "cheap" relatively speaking. It is also worth noting that this controller seems like a slight redesign of Hori's existing Xbox controllers. They seems to have licensed controllers for a few companies.

I use the trackpad on Deck as a mouse because with PC gaming you never know how often you'll need a mouse. Doesn't mean I want to be using it for camera movement all the time, especially with awful feeling right stick emulation... and it especially doesn't mean I want no good D-pad for 2D games on my controller. These are things the Deck's revised design actually considered; instead of replacing parts, they added, and it's actually way more usable even as a handheld PC as a result...! It is unlikely to fix the stuttering as I think that is likely a Bluetooth issue, so try wired and see if it fixes it. 10:25 From my understanding that's the case. The OLED Deck can wake on Bluetooth while the LCD models cannot due to the Bluetooth hardware on the LCD models just not supporting it as a feature. As for the weight, it's definitely the lack of rumble since the Sixaxis was just unusually light while the Dual Shock 3 was actually the expected weight-the Sixaxis did seem to have reasonable battery life regardless of lack of weight, so it may not be a good indicator of battery size. That said Hori does make good fight sticks, but they've made some odd design decisions with their gamepads. For example their Switch left JoyCon that has an actual D-pad instead of the 4 buttons seems like it'd be an obvious upgrade, but it lacks an onboard battery, rumble, and gyro. It's not necessarily a deal-breaker, but really it makes the audience who would likely purchase it much smaller.

I'm really bummed out about wake-on-bluetooth being OLED only. But can't justify the upgrade atm. I just posted another video talking more about the controllers. Another commenter mentioned that lightweight is a good quality for gyro gamers, so I think the reduced weight is more reasonable. My two biggest problems now is the fact that the gyro works best when plugged in, and the trigger button travel distance is really short. Also, a joycon without a battery, gyro, and rumble does sound really bad lol. What were they thinking?

@@LandenL Hori is better known for their fight sticks and it kind of shows. I always find it funny how companies design a product like a controller that’s going to be presumably held for an hour+ so they design it to be light, but then everyone thinks that feels cheap because it’s not a 1kg stone in your hands.

It doesnt happen often, but same games do get weird about gyro input. its usually best to just map they gryo directly to mouse input. I'd also recommend testing it with a non-valve game. valve has this weird thing they like to do where they build these API's and features like steam controller input for their games, then half ass the support for them so shit only kinda works. best to just map everything to either xinput or mouse/keyboard.

I think most people would have preferred basically a steam deck with out a screen even if it cost like $100-125. The fact that its missing mouse pads means its a deal breaker for me. He might not want to go into steam input and set everything up but the people who this controller would have been designed for would have and like it. Yeah setting up radial menus, command strings, and etc can be a little time consuming but once you have it set; its set. The controller seems like it was a half ass attempt to make a controller compatible with steam input. Can you even set those 2 paddle and 2 front buttons to anything you want like esc, or a keyboard button? This just seems like another overpriced controller

Are we sure it's Bluetooth and not 2.4 ghz with the dongle? Usually 2.4 is lower latency but there are standouts like the DS4 and dualsense that has better latency via Bluetooth than wired. According to the latest LTT controller video the dualsense Bluetooth latency beats most contollers wires, 2.4 ghz, or Bluetooth.
@LandenL3 ай бұрын
I tried using the dongle the other day. It's definitely a Bluetooth dongle. But the problem is, the Steam UI doesn't distinguish between the built in Bluetooth and the dongle. I am sure you can go into linux and write a script to handle all that, but I do not care enough.

Picked one of these up off ebay for too much, but I am a gyro enjoyer that does not like the ps5 controller and they do not make ps4 controllers anymore. I watched your other video first. Good to know gyro is better with a cable, but that makes is sound like a polling rate problem with low powered blue tooth. I hope Hori or Valve can update the firmware, probably Hori. But I don't know if I will notice if that happens as this is a Japanese domestic product.

Yeah I have the same issue with the nitro deck on the switch. The right face button should not be the same shape as the other ones because since it’s on the edge it has to slope along with the controller to make it seem like the controller is one shape of that makes sense. This one falls completely flat (no pun intended) as the button cuts off like a cliff. I was never a big fan of hori accessories because of their very cheap quality. 8bitdo does make cheap controllers from a price perspective and it’s no where near the quality of an official controller but at least they put a ton of features on their ultimate controller and at least put in the effort on the quality of their products.

I just have one question about it, regarding Emudeck. Normally, Emudeck works fine on handheld mode, but on docked mode you have to manually go into the individual emulator itself and re-select the controller input since it counts the xbox controller and the buttons on the steam deck as 2 different controllers. Can this controller "trick" it into always thinking I'm using the steam decks buttons so I wont have to always do that?
@Khajitxi4 ай бұрын
Do the back paddles count as their own buttons like the steam controller has a monopoly/patent on for at least another decade? If so, that alone makes it easy to use out of the box compared to other modern controllers as you have to fidangle a solution in steam to make backpaddles function.
