I saw someone else saying that this thing most likely exists to help Valve grow the presence of Steam in Japan. A lot of games work with an Xbox controller, and since Xbox’s presence is basically nonexistent in Japan they decided to work with a local company to make a controller that functions like an Xbox one. The guy was also saying a lot of the same things you did where that company’s controllers aren’t outright bad, but they aren’t good either. They’re in the awkward middle ground where they’re functional, but feel cheap. He was also saying that this isn’t an indication of Valve making a Steam Machine 2 or a new incarnation of their weird controller (I remember having that contorller. Not sure if we still have it. I think the thing might not have worked, so we got rid of it. I’ve heard the people who like that controller really like it). If they were to dip their toes back into the console market they’d most likely make a controller that’s basically a more compact version of the Steam Deck’s controls.

I agree. Seems like Valves entry to the Japanese market. And the Japanese economy isn't the greatest, so that is why the controller is "cheap" relatively speaking. It is also worth noting that this controller seems like a slight redesign of Hori's existing Xbox controllers. They seems to have licensed controllers for a few companies.

Exactly the reason. This is actually A Nintendo switch controller that has just been made into a steam deck with back buttons and capacitive touch sticks. That's why there is a lack of travel for the triggers. I was really hoping that valve would make one by now with four rear paddles full gyroscopics and haptic feedback. Maybe soon

@@CrocoDylianVT if you saw the Steam Controller 2 patent that Valve made before they're sued by Scuf, you'd know that it's actually possible. The only reason they can't make Steam Controller 2 is because of Scuf. Scuf played "the little guy" & patent-trolled the first Steam Controller, all thanks to the beloved back grips. Every other company that has those grips has to pay royalty to Scuf, and Valve didn't want to pay. The judge of the case ate Scuf's accusations right up, ignoring that Scuf was patent-trolling & they overcharge their controllers by 2~3 times the MSRP.

Someone in these comments said "Screenless steamdeck controller" and that's pretty much what I'm waiting for. I don't have a steam deck but I imagine it's gotta suck if you wanted all the inbuilt controller features while playing it docked. You'd pretty much have to play in some tethered setup holding the Deck while have the usb-c cord connected to the monitor (most monitors I heard take usb-c for video, power and even extended ports since they have those too). And that's not even mentioning you wanted all those features but don't care for the Deck itself.

I missed this at first, but realized I would mostly use it alongside an additional button anyway. Like aiming down sights, or when aiming a bow, etc. So I just adjusted to make sure it activates with this button and it does roughly the same thing. I also found the capacitive touch somewhat unreliable at times, even on the Steam Deck. I would often activate it accidentally, so I actually prefer my own method instead.

If you use gyro you dont want very heavy controllers usually. As for the gyro showoff, the setting you used is not ideal, you really wanna use as mouse or to mouse in order to get a good idea. I hope the gyro issues are due to set up and not hardware because if it's just a meh controller with meh button feedback and meh gyro sensors, it's somewhat of a slap to the legacy of the og steam controller.

Wanting a light controller for gyro is a good point. I didn't think of that. It's hard to tell in the video, but the gyro feels like it is moving in small increments instead of a smooth movement. In programming terms, it feels like the gyro is using integers instead of floats. Idk if this is a bug or is unfixable. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

@LandenL yeah, you definitely want mouse gyro. Joystick input for gyro is often pretty bad. Setting vertical sensitivity lower, and resting it on your lap or a desk is pretty important for steady gyro. There are many ways to skin a cat though. Some people also have success with acceleration. Gyro is promising, but there is no gold standard quite yet. I have been playing with gyro quite a bit lately. Flickstick videos has some guides.

The Steam Controller's fatal flaw is that it replaces parts of a standard controller instead of adding to them. I use the trackpad on Deck as a mouse because with PC gaming you never know how often you'll need a mouse. Doesn't mean I want to be using it for camera movement all the time, especially with awful feeling right stick emulation... and it especially doesn't mean I want no good D-pad for 2D games on my controller. These are things the Deck's revised design actually considered; instead of replacing parts, they added, and it's actually way more usable even as a handheld PC as a result...! You have so many buttons you can map to all kinds of common keys, really making it your own.

Not really since this thing supports Steam input natively. Including the gyro functionality which doesn't have to be setup under PlayStation controller support settings on Steam. @@severinevans346 thanks for reminding me how silly the median gamer is. The steam horipad has an xinput mode. You have to pair it to your pc in the steam mode for it to be supported in steam natively. Want to know how much effort it takes to get a playstation controller working in steam? One setting. Thats it. And it works. The whole needing to configure the gyro thing happens for basically every controller, because devs chose default templates that rarely have the gyro configured. Dont be fooled by the branding; both the horipad and a playstation controller take some effort to get fully functioning. Only, the playstation controller has objectively more functionality (trackpad) and likely a better gyro.

@@Mennenth I think they are both six axis gyro so I don't think it's better it's the same. I don't know what you mean by median gamer but if you are claiming some kind of superiority that's extremely narcissistic. Also dualsense and dualshock 4 neither have touch capacitive analogue sticks either but the Hori pad does. They also weigh more which isn't good for using gyro over long periods. If you want to try out the gyro with baseline settings that should feel pretty good, use Gyro to mouse [beta] with these settings: Set your gyro activate button to what you like Gyro speed deadzone turn off Gyro precision speed, turn off Vertical/horizontal output mixer set to -25% Acceleration linear 3DOF to 2D conversion set to Local Everything else can be set as default and you can adjust your sensitivity to what feels best. It is unlikely to fix the stuttering as I think that is likely a Bluetooth issue, so try wired and see if it fixes it. But these settings will be a good starting point and much better than what you're currently using. An updated video using wired with these settings would be appreciated by the gyro community if you feel like it/have the time. 10:25 From my understanding that's the case. The OLED Deck can wake on Bluetooth while the LCD models cannot due to the Bluetooth hardware on the LCD models just not supporting it as a feature. As for the weight, it's definitely the lack of rumble since the Sixaxis was just unusually light while the Dual Shock 3 was actually the expected weight-the Sixaxis did seem to have reasonable battery life regardless of lack of weight, so it may not be a good indicator of battery size. That said Hori does make good fight sticks, but they've made some odd design decisions with their gamepads. For example their Switch left JoyCon that has an actual D-pad instead of the 4 buttons seems like it'd be an obvious upgrade, but it lacks an onboard battery, rumble, and gyro. It's not necessarily a deal-breaker, but really it makes the audience who would likely purchase it much smaller.

I'm really bummed out about wake-on-bluetooth being OLED only. But can't justify the upgrade atm. I just posted another video talking more about the controllers. Another commenter mentioned that lightweight is a good quality for gyro gamers, so I think the reduced weight is more reasonable. My two biggest problems now is the fact that the gyro works best when plugged in, and the trigger button travel distance is really short. Also, a joycon without a battery, gyro, and rumble does sound really bad lol. What were they thinking?

I just have one question about it, regarding Emudeck. Normally, Emudeck works fine on handheld mode, but on docked mode you have to manually go into the individual emulator itself and re-select the controller input since it counts the xbox controller and the buttons on the steam deck as 2 different controllers. Can this controller "trick" it into always thinking I'm using the steam decks buttons so I wont have to always do that?

I think its so funny that mice used to have more weight as a selling point but nowadays we try to make them as light as possible vs what you said about the controller. Maybe as gyro becomes more standard, people will worry more about the weight for fatigue. But yeah man. Steam menus are always a time an a half to wrangle but its worth it once you figure out some of the nuances and advanced features on em lmfao. If i had to guess, it was probably using controlstick as gyro aim or maybe it is just the bluetooth connection but eh who knows lmfao. You can wake it up from sleep if the dongle was connected, don't think it would turn on though. Other gamepads can do the same on LCD Deck with dongle. As for the gyro being weird, maybe it's a few days off from being fully patched software wise with Steam? Idk, it's clearly got issues. The gyro not functioning whatsoever is a current bug that is yet to be fixed, so hopefully they'll address the Hori gamepad as well.

For the LCD at least, the dongle should have an active power source apart from the Deck (like a plugged dock) and the Deck must have been suspended and left connected before suspension (if you unplug it while suspended, it won't work as the USB would have desynced). It's a hardware problem on the LCD (it was designed to cut all output power on suspension, unlike the OLED).

@@MaoRatto I don't think I want to be limited to direct input cause I seem to think steam won't play nice with that (am I wrong?) Currently when I use the 360 controller, steam auto detects it and automatically sets up the buttons for games. It's almost like steam has all this custom code in it just for using xbox controllers. Even a lot of the games like Skyrim have little xbox button icons in game. It sounds like I'd have to use some third party wrapper to convert it to xinput or something. 8bitdo looks good, especially the one with the drift free hall effect sticks, but that one costs more than the xbox controller and has to be shipped from overseas with no local warranty. Still, might be worth it for those sticks but then i saw some reviews on Amazon saying they're too sensitive, like the spring resistance on the sticks is too low or something?
