What the Steam Deck has over the other similar Switch-like devices that can play PC and Steam games is the price. It is way more affordable than a $1000+ machine and Steam games are supposed to be optomized for it. I am looking forward to the future of that device. I wanted to pre-order one, but I'll probably wait until there is a version 2 or version 3. It is rather big, so hopefully next versions will do like laptops and get smaller. In the meantime, I'll continue enjoying my Switch.

As someone who started with a gameboy, moved on to a ds, then to xbox, pc, and now own both a deck and a switch, I can confidently say I prefer the deck over the switch. Not because the switch is bad, but because last I had a Nintendo device, they were pocketable. And that is the charm I wanted; a pocketable nintendo device. If we're gonna take a mini tablet with us in a case, I'll pick whatever has the most power and utility. And since I'm Dutch, the size isn't much of an issue.

It really isnt complicated to use, so far I have tried fallout 4, elden rings, assasins creed black flag, far cry 3, F1 2020, mad max, no mans sky plus a few more and have not had to tinker at all. Its great. Plus steam games are so much cheaper. Some games will require tinkering with no doubt but lots work just fine out the box. When I get a dock I will use it as a portable pc as well. All for 350 quid plus a 60 quid 512 sd card.

I got into the steam deck lineup in the beginning of June this year with the website saying anticipated purchase between October - December in Canada. I'm planning on waiting it out since I've got a "to be played" list on my other consoles that could take me a year of straight playing to get through. I decided to take the plunge mostly to get access to the smaller indie cozy games that either don't come to the switch or take forever to get there. The switch is my before bed cozy gaming console. Loved the review, pumped I found a Canadian cozy game streamer to follow!

The Steam Deck promises all the things I want but don't want to spend tons of money on different set ups as a VERY casual gamer of both Indies and AAA stuff: It's basically a PC, I can use it with my external display and use mouse/keyboard if I want. I can take in on business trips and my commute to get some time in. I can play on the couch, not sitting at a desk, and in between during the day. I can (hopefully) emulate all my old windows games that I liked to play as a kid and much more. And can still get the at the moment newest stuff to play. And I can use my existing steam library and make use of their crazy sales, no need to repurchase for high prices. And all that for a really affordable price. I'm shook.

Yeah, the Steam Deck definitely isn't a Switch killer. Not even sure what "killing" a device that has moved 100 million units would look like. I do think it puts a bit of competitive pressure on the Switch 2 or Switch Pro or whatever's coming next, but the current Switch is firmly established with lots of big name first-party titles and a few other key advantages for the "non-tinkerer" demographics. That said, I'm very excited to get my Deck in Q3. It has its own key advantages and I've been hyped since the moment it was announced. I've been buying various multi-platform games through Steam when that's an option, in preparation for the Deck and because I'll have the option to play them on my laptop until then. I'm also very excited for older games that either haven't been ported to Switch or are only on the NSO subscription. (I prefer to buy and keep games instead of renting them and we all know Nintendo will sunset the Switch eShop eventually, just like they're doing to 3DS and Wii U.) The Switch could've been the absolute king of retro. It has the specs to run basically everything from any older console. I used to want every game I've ever loved or even kind of liked to get a Switch port. Now I want them all on Steam and a bunch of them are already there. So while the Steam Deck may not be a Switch killer, I definitely think it will have an impact in many areas of the gaming market, including Nintendo's third-party sales figures, even if customers like me are only a comparatively small slice of Nintendo's 100 million Switch users.

Yep comparisons are a bit silly really, as you say, you buy into a platform, nintendo, steam, playstation etc. I think the steam deck is cheap for what it is and valve will make its money from games sales rather than from the deck, much like amazon do with their fires.

I still have a preorder for the Steam Deck, but I think when it's my turn I'm just going to cancel. I have a Switch that I like playing on and I also have a gaming laptop (plus gaming PC). I think I would be a little more apt to follow through if it played all of my games, but with not being able to play all the games I have on PC it's not worth the cost.
