Jonathan, on your injector issues, a few cautions that you may already know. Those union fittings are usually individually lapped to the injector their on, may not seal on a different body. Also, their designed to operate in a specific boiler pressure, and temperature feed water. If the boiler pressure is above or below the rated work range, they will either balk or refuse to work. Same with the feed water temp. As a rule of thumb, if the feed water is above your body temp, it won't pick up. The injector don't need pre heated feed as the injector will heat the water at the delivery line. The piston pump is the one that can benefit from preheat. Now there are injectors that are designed for different pressures and temps, one would need to look the specs on the ones your using. These feed problems are the reason that we are required to have 2 means of feed water, in case one fails. Many times a bucket of cool water poured on an over heated injector will get it working. BTW, love your videos!

What you have done with these steam engines is nothing short of amazing. Certainly this is one of very few collections this size in the US that are not only mostly operational, but privately owned and maintained. Years ago I worked as a volunteer at the New England Wireless and Steam museum in Rhode Island which was owned by the late Bob Merrium. They had a yearly steam up where all of the stationary steam engines were operated, but that took a large group of volunteers, and not as many engines as you have!

I remember when you got your 1st engine. You kept saying- "oh maybe I'll make it run, maybe not... if anything I'll just inject it with air...." and- "I don't think I'll light light up a boiler as they are probably unsafe.... " HA! You've come a LONG way and its been fun sharing the experience! Now look at you! You're running 10+ engines on some of the baddest old boilers one can get their hands on. Doesn't seem to be anything you 'can't" do! Love the fact you've studied and preserved this old machinery!

Love it! If the exhaust is putting water onto the roof, go to a larger diameter discharge pipe and extend it 4-6 feet. This will allow the discharge to cool and the condensate will drain back down the pipe rather than being spit out onto the roof. 🙂 Or, decrease the size of the discharge pipe and insulate it. This may allow the exhaust to remain steam and force it up and out farther away before it condenses.

Would you consider hooking up the steam boiler with old school radiators to heat your shops or even your home? My stepdad still resides in the home I grew up in in Baltimore and that house (built in 1927) still has those old caste iron radiators. Naturally they have a relatively modern natural gas fired boiler, (it was an old asbestos covered oil burner when I was a kid). Staying up there in the winter and hearing those old radiators pop and clank as they heat my old bedroom sure brings back fond memories.
