The other day I saw #611 being hauled through the Enola Yards in Harrisburg, PA. It caught me by surprise as I was zipping bye on the highway. I've been to the Railroad Museum in Strasburg a few times with my children over the years. Now they're grown up and I'm planning on taking my grandsons to Strasburg and redoing the Museum experience again.

Is 611 the largest engine to ever run on Strasburg's tracks? It looks MASSIVE compared to old 89.
@SgtNuker5 жыл бұрын
@@thunderbird1921 I wouldn't think she's the largest engine to ever grace Strasburg's tracks because of those engines at the museum, BUT I would hazard a guess that she's the largest to be used to pull a train on the line.
@KLTrainz5 жыл бұрын
@@SgtNuker The largest engine to arrive on Strasburg rails prior to 611 was Nickel Plate Road berk #757, weighing 802,000 lbs and is 100ft long. Now 611 arrives and weighs 872,000 lbs and i 109ft long. 611 now holds the record!

I remember as a kid taking the train with my grandmother from Welch, WV to Roanoke,VA. It was the Norfolk Western Powhatan Arrow pulled by the beautiful "J" Series steam locomotives. My family took several trips via the N&W trains. It was such a wonderful and comfortable way to travel. These are very precious memories!

Most of the Strasberg passenger car are ex Boston and Maine railroad originally from the great passenger fleet then downgraded to the commuter fleet into north station in Boston, the last great fleet of wooden passenger cars. Then in the 50's when the Budd RDC cars took over all passenger operations the wooden passenger cars were downgraded to work train service. This is where Strasberg acquired their passenger fleet from. And they were happy to get them from full coaches to combines ( passenger and a section of the car was for bulk cargo) One reason why they bought so many cars and chose wooden cars over all the good steel cars on the market is they built a wood shop and hired local carpenters, Amish carpenters that are used to build without power tools and the quality if a little long in coming as a wooden passenger car is much more difficult to build and more difficult to rebuild. If I recall the output of the shop is roughly one car a year which looks like it just was outshopped by a company that specialized in passenger cars in 1872 from Jackson and Sharp which built passenger cars and boats starting in 1872 and quickly became known as a quality builder of boats and railroad cars.
