I absolutely adore these old clips of mainline running. This really was the golden age of rail tours where you had unique double headers and unusual engines in foreign territories. Nothing of this calibre today, not since a 7F and Evening Star left the main line scene. Superb footage, so honoured to be able to watch this. Also of note - Steam engines seemed to have a lot to shout about back then, especially Sir Nigel Gresley and Sir Lamiel.

Thanks very much. I agree with you about the mix of locos we enjoyed back then and I've always thought that loco performances were, shall we say, a bit more lively!

Another wonderful set of nostalgic clips. The opening shot of the sparks flying out of 4498s chimney and the subsequent fires was astonishing. Great video. Cheers, Dave.

Thanks Dave, that run of 4498 is one I'll never forget, quite appropriate that it took place in November too!

Another superb instalment Austin - I could watch these all day - and it's a real treat to see cine with the original sound, rather than over-dubs. Great to see Wennington Box again, and the flame throwing antics in the first shot would put 5972 to shame!
@acw710009 жыл бұрын
Thanks again David, that evening with 4498 still sticks in the memory. I think it was a next to last run before an overhaul and the crew seemed keen to put on a show as they so often did in those days. Stand by for Leander and the Midland Compound!

Fantastic footage in both parts. What a display by 4498. Quite alarming results compared to what occurs on the ML today. Awesome power from 92220 on a photo run past. Thanks for posting the two videos. I hope there is more to come!

Thank you very much, that run of 4498 still lives on in my mind, unforgettable and certainly not one that would go down too well today. Couple more episodes still to come

Absolutely fantastic footage Austin... Had to smile in the first clip of 4498 setting fire to the bank....Should have re-named the Loco..'The Fire Starter ' lol... This is a second chance to look at your amazing collection of Rail Clips...very fascinating. Gives us an insight to the many Years you have been a Railway enthusiast...Well done....Steve.

Wonderful collection of clips from 1981 Austin! As Bob says, these are priceless timepieces which really deserve to be kept for posterity and as a reminder of the locos in regular use at that time. I was very impressed with the start up of, firstly 5000 & 777, and later of Evening Star at a location I don't recognise. The locos concerned really let it rip blasting past you; where was it? The drivers all seemed more generous with the whistles than they do nowadays. Great work again and thanks for your hard work in putting them on line. Best wishes. Ken
@acw710009 жыл бұрын
Many thanks Ken, glad you're enjoying this archive footage. 5000 and 777 were seen in a runpast at Appleby then later at Ais Gill. Evening Star o a runpast at Craven Arms and then at Hereford where locos exchanged on the Welsh Marches Express. I should really have added location details originally but I'll go back and add them now and make sure further instalments have a bit more detail. Crews did seem more enthusiastic then and of course linesiders weren't considered the pariahs of the railway scene then

Crikey, that's a heck of an opening shot. I hope you've sent a link to this to Network Rail at York, it'd really wind them up. Some of those drivers were very whistle happy, weren't they.
@acw710009 жыл бұрын
Much more whistle about then than now I feel. Steam wasn't instantly banned after 4498 set fire to Giggleswick Bank! Thanks for watching

What can I say Austin other than I hope there is more to come from this series (and thank you to Ebay for providing you with the new projector)? Chris

Thanks Chris, the projector was a really good buy as previously it was touch and go when the old one would chew up another bit of precious film.

A good bit of nostalgia. You can see why they cancel rail tours to stop fires given the SNG shot.

@acw710009 жыл бұрын
Thanks Noel, that performance from 4498 is one I'll never forget. If I remember rightly it was a last but one run before overhaul and the crew were obviously out to enjoy themselves
