The nathan 6 chime whistle gets its voice from the fact that the 6 chimes usually don't all play all together. The different chimes come in and out of sounding as the steam pressure and steam density changes- and as the whistle's temperature changes from being used. It sounds to me like the squeal is one of the high chimes playing when a light hand is on the whistle, then as the whistle valve opens the other chimes come in while that squealing high note cuts out and you end up with the loud but kind of raspy sound closer to a nathan 5 chime instead of a 6 chime since the 6th chime stopped playing. With proper technique quilling the whistle, and matching the dimensions of the disc and opening to steam conditions, it is possible to summon up the legendary sound of Casey Jones himself. When the Nathan 5 chime was designed, it was said to mimic that sound. The 6 chime just adds one additional note to produce a minor chord as well as the G Major 4th that the 5 chimes play.

Obviously the other chimes got fixed during NKP 765's most recent 2005 overhaul. It would be quite something if ONLY those high chimes still played like they did in the 80s before she was taken out of her first excursion career in 1993. Reminds me of the good ol' New River Train days, the days before 1995, that is... :)

Rail Joy Productions yes it does remind me of the New River Train Days. Honestly I'd rather hear here 6-Chime from the 80s/90s all the time. This new one is awesome too but I'd rather here her first one (80s/90s 6-Chime).

so G major 4th, (I'm assuming you mean a suspension) G Bb C D? The top note is definitely and E. Ive heard it more as a C7 with the 9th

The bowl that’s on the bottom of most whistles is turned to produce different tuning pitches. The sound from the 80s and 90s was produced by the bowl being just loose enough and the steam pressure being right to move the bowl a smut has, causing that tone to play

FWRHS needs to retune her whistle back to sounding the way it did from 1984 to 1993 in my opinion. That and sometimes put her original whistle and original bell on for certain events.

Her original whistle was cracked during the early 80s and now has NKP #700's whistle. I personally like the sounding of the whistle from 84-93 also. The way its tuned is awesome now but I would prefer it the 84-93 tuning. They say the reasoning of it sounding different is because as whistles age, they become weak sometimes so tuning it to a different sound might be better for the whistle so it doesn't crack like 765's. I wish they would stick the auxiliary whistle from the New River Train Excursions back on 765 (I think the first time it was put on was 1987-1991).

unfortunately what we had back in the 80's and 90's will be difficult to repeat since some unique steam cutting over the years of service was made on the plate at the bowl of the chimes. they were cleaned up during the rebuild back in the 2000's and is almost impossible to replicate without machining a new plate..... I loved it back then as well.

It's upsetting to hear that 765 will go down for the 1472 Day FRA Inspection, if this is rumored then who will takeover the excursions for 765? Maybe 624 might fill in for her when she joins the FWRHS!
@GTRailFanProductions6 жыл бұрын
I talked to Fort Wayne and 765 will not have to go under for her 1472 Day inspection. During their one their off-season they did their 1472 Rebuild. She will be good til 2030. Now this year the only thing that might out her under I'd getting PTC.

Definitely heard the same thing with her whistle beginning at 26:08 in the runby! Seems unusual for that to happen again... A treat, nonetheless! :)

Rail Joy Productions It is a treat. I couldn't believe my ears because it was squealing pretty bad for a couple seconds, then the beautiful 80s/90s 6-Chime came out for like 4-5 Seconds! It was amazing and a nice treat. Thanks for watching GT Rail Fan Productions and hit the subscribe button to see more great videos like this!

you think it's weird that in today railroading it take three or four disels compared to one steamy to pull a long freight or passenger train
@renegadeoflife877 жыл бұрын
In the days of steam, each locomotive required 2-3 men aboard to operate and many more in the yard and backshop to keep the engine healthy. Pulling as much as possible with each locomotive was first and foremost in the profitability-driven minds of railroad manager, as these engines were expensive to operate. With diesels, the entire train can be managed safely by only 2 people: driver and conductor. It costs little to provide more locomotives than is required, as the extras can be activated in mere minutes notice to cover for a failed unit or to provide extra traction and braking power. Makes the railroad a lot more robust than in the age of steam, because a failed locomotive is not as likely to tie up the line and trains aren't stalling on the grades nearly as often as they used to. There's video of #611 stalling on the Saluda grade here on youtube, she tied up the track for quite a while while waiting for help climbing the 6% grade. 765 being a fast freight has a somewhat better track record regarding steep hills and heavy consists, but it can still happen.

David Archer a Nathan 5-chime is like the whistle on the Polar Express. That sounds nothing like 765's whistle. 765's is a 6-Chime. Since when did FWRHS say it's a 5-Chime...
