A compilation of clips filmed on the West Highland line and Mallaig extension in Scotland between 2012 and 2017 featuring LMS Black Fives 44871 and 45407 and LNER K1 62005. 2019 marks the 125th. anniversary of the opening of the line but sadly in this year it has suffered a number of problems due to bad weather and part of the line will be closed for a couple of weeks in October while essential maintenance is carried out

This truly is a piece of art. No background music, narration, or anything else to distract the viewer. Just stunning settings, and the sound of railroading 's past. I think my favorite segment starts at about 8:50. It is of a train pulling a grade over a long trestle and around a curve. Magnificent.

Thanks very much Jim. I think music on railway videos is hated by the majority of enthusiasts, the sound of hard working locos is enough for me. The shot you mention was filmed at Rannoch Viaduct, a wonderful lonely spot.

The Double Header clip reminded me of the trains we had being pulled over Shap on the way to our summer holidays in Scotland when I was a child. Great work and a wonderful way to see the trains in the fabulous landscape. Lots of happy memories too. Thank you.

Thank you very much for your kind comments. When I film on Shap these days I often long for a time machine to go back to the days of steam! We used to go to the West Country on holiday so my childhood memories are of gleaming Great Western locos with their highly polished copper and brass

I have watched a lot of videos about steam trains, but this sets the bar at a new height. The clarity of the picture and sound is incredible. There were a couple sequences where I wasn't watching a video; I was right there standing in the field. Wow!

I twice went on hiking vacations in the Highlands, Skye, Lewis & Harris.....took the train from Stirling to Ft. Williams, we had to have gone through some of this area.It was not on a steam train but the country was so beautiful. At one spot that seemed to be in the middle of nowhere the train stopped to let off a fisherman and I was told they would pick him up on the way back. These were the first train trips I ever took,what a great way to travel........thanks so much......

Many thanks Peter. I'd really love to travel over the full West Highland line behind steam. I often think it would be nice if passengers could travel when the empty stock goes up for The Jacobite. I'm sure it would sell out even though you'd have to make your own arrangements for the return

I've watched a lot of your videos, but this..., this is something else!!! I'm a huge GWR fan but outside of the GWR I think my favourite British steam locomotives are the Black 5's. Stanier was onto something when he and his draughtsmen designed them! This is too good for a small screen - this should be on a DVD and be being watched on a good sized TV with appropriate sound! 😍😍😍

@@acw71000 I was wondering if it was just trolling. Needing to know all the locations is not crucial and should not inspire rage. There are much more important things to get upset about! What matters is the care you take to find good vantage points, the logistics and figuring out timings. This very complex film making that you do brilliantly. BTW I think it was you who compared the looks of Black Fives favourably to Britannias. I think larger diameter smokebox doors would have looked better on Brits. Staniers locos look the way they do because they were styled by a certain draughtsman. I can't be sure but I think his name may have been Coleman. I will check... Yes. I checked. It was Tom Coleman. His contribution tends to be forgotten. It was he who pursuaded the LMS to develop something bigger than Princess class locos and he schemed-out what would be the Princess Coronations... A big influence on I think all designs credited to Stanier. I would go as far as calling Black Fives 'Coleman-Staniers'.
@acw71000
@acw71000 4 жыл бұрын
Interesting abut Tom Coleman. I suppose when you think about it there were a lot of folk putting in their thoughts and ideas into various loco designs but it's the 'big names' who get all the credit

@@acw71000 I can recomend a two volume book by a senior draughtsman called 'Under Ten CMEs' written by E A Langridge and published by Oakwood Press. It covers a career stretching from Drummond to Harrison 1912 to 1959. It helps to know a bit about locomotive parts and workshop techniques. But I am sure you do. Longridge designed the bogies for Class 24 and 25 for example and lots, lots more. A real insider's view.... with over forty references to Coleman.

I’ve just come back from there and the only thing missing in this video is ‘Smell-a-vision’! 😆 One can’t explain the freshness and cleanses of the air up there and how you managed to capture this sequence in film (sorry video) is absolutely wonderful my friend!.....and you did it with out it obviously raining 😆 If l was told once l was told a 100 times whilst l was there. “You don’t come to Scotland for the weather” 😆
@acw71000
@acw71000 4 жыл бұрын
Have to admit that 'Smell-a- vision' would be very appealing! We've been very fortunate with weather on our visits to Scotland, with 2012 being a highlight with clear skies and very cold temperatures. The lochs were so still with a little mist above them, quite magical

Thing is Austin no one could possibly understand the complexities of shooting a film like this until you’ve actually been there and realise it could be sunshine one minute, pouring with rain and 90 mph winds the next with perhaps a dash of snow and then back to sunshine. And that’s ALL within 25 minutes on a Scottish summers day! 😆😆😆😆 Thank you again for such an amazing film though mate! John
