the vast majority of users do not use steam this way, so it is hardly the key factor in its success. the reason steam is supreme is because they got in the game early, and they have continually provided the largest library of content while their meager competition struggles to entice consumers with small libraries and with no real edge in their service that they can provide to the user over steam. people don't want to install another launcher just to play that one game that isn't on steam.

Things great about steam: 1. Valve actually makes their own games and doesn’t just buy the rights to other games 2. They allow you to trade in-game items and trading cards 3. They have community driven guides to games 4. You can gift games and gift cards to friends 5. You can use skins to change the look of steam 6. Music player in game 7. Browser in game 8. Allows mods on the marketplace to sometimes be bought but usually free 9. Occasional free games 10. Sales for important events 11. Events with prizes (usually a badge, some trading cards, profile accessories and emoticons)

funnily enough, when people mention the 30% cut Steam gets from being a Dev as a counterpoint especially when comparing it to like Epic's 12% cut, that argument does not cut it when you realize that the 30% comes with stuff that eases and helps a dev create a community for their product and even help in the process of creating content for said product as the dev; that and 30% percent being industry standard but hey. 12% to get your product in the store... and... _checks notes_ Ah yes, have the ability to monitor reviews for the product. Meanwhile, sure they get 30% but I get access to frameworks and a dedicated modding hub? Oo Discussion Boards, Groups, and Guide Boards too? I can grow a community for my product in just one app rather than have it scattered? I don't have to rely on third party sites and softwares to be able to expand community reach? Oh my god they even have a premade support page for general common problems. Also people forget that Steam doesn't only host games; They can host music, videos, art, and best of all, other Software that are not entirely games. Blender, Vegas Pro, hell the one app a ton of people use, Wallpaper Engine, is on Steam as well.

Not to mention that steam only charges 30% once your game has hit specific sales numbers, below which theyll charge substantially less while still giving you access to everything steam has to offer. GOG steadfastly refuses to make a linux launcher, and they're not as DRM free as they used to be, for example, they let Hitman 3 onto the store before they removed it after backlash, and some games now require GOG galaxy for multiplayer functionality which if you play multiplayer games is not really any more or less "DRM free" than steam is.

@@DoxxBoxx Well, the good news is, you don't have to use linux yourself, that's something for me to worry about. The bad news is, GOG not making a linux client means that people are not playing going to be playing their GOG games that require Galaxy for multiplayer on a steam deck, and also people are being robbed of options to use things they like as a result. However you feel about linux, it's never a good thing to be robbed of options. Options are the whole reason we use things that aren't steam to begin with. Steam is perfectly serviceable, but if you're using GOG to begin with that means Steam is lacking something you want so you bought a particular game there. It's the same principle for Linux vs. Windows. Windows is perfectly servicable just like Steam is, but GOG has some nifty features just like Linux does.

GOG is also a good storefront, although it can't compete with Steam, it's a very good complement for getting the best versions of some old games which have dogshit Steam builds (e.g. Crysis 1 Steam build still having SecuROM or Fallout 3 Steam build still having GFWL 🤮), it also has some exclusives like Diablo or the old Mortal Kombat games, and the biggest sell point of GOG is that MOST (some games still have DRM remnants like FEAR) of the titles are DRM-free, so you get true ownership of the digital license you bought. The launcher isn't a big deal but it looks nice, works most of the time and it has some features that Steam doesn't have like linking other launcher accounts or being to rollback to previous game versions.

ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer) was the first programmable, electronic, general-purpose digital computer made in 1945. It was Turing-complete and able to solve "a large class of numerical problems" through reprogramming. Although ENIAC was designed and primarily used to calculate artillery firing tables for the United States Army's Ballistic Research Laboratory (which later became a part of the Army Research Laboratory), its first program was a study of the feasibility of the thermonuclear weapon. ENIAC was completed in 1945 and first put to work for practical purposes on December 10, 1945. ENIAC was formally dedicated at the University of Pennsylvania on February 15, 1946, having cost $487,000 (equivalent to $5,900,000 in 2020), and was heralded as a "Giant Brain" by the press. It had a speed on the order of one thousand times faster than that of electro-mechanical machines; this computational power, coupled with general-purpose programmability, excited scientists and industrialists alike. The combination of speed and programmability allowed for thousands more calculations for problems. As ENIAC calculated a trajectory in 30 seconds that took a human 20 hours, one ENIAC could replace 2400 humans. ENIAC was formally accepted by the U.S. Army Ordnance Corps in July 1946. It was transferred to Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland in 1947, where it was in continuous operation until 1955.

As a Linux user, Steam is the greatest piece of software for gaming ever released on Linux. Because of Proton and the way it promotes Linux I can play games that normally I would never have access to. On top of that because of Steam sales, I was able to get the entire Doom franchise for $20 and the Wolfenstein collection for $15. With the release of the Steam Deck soon I will not only be able to play games on any device but also anytime and anywhere. I will receive my Steam Deck in Q3 and I wait every day for it. When my keyboard recently broke I ordered a Steam controller and although not arrived yet I look forward to playing games with it. Portal 2 is one of the greatest games of all time and Half-Life 2 is a masterpiece. I'm still playing through episode 1 and soon ill start episode 2. The PC gaming market is looking bright and hopefully SteamOS takes off on the desktop.

Great video! One thing that was not mentioned in detail is the Steam store. It is very clear, adapts to your taste and shows you popular games, but also sometimes small games that are mega good. Also it shows user reviews, small videos when you mouse over the game are played, updates from developer that you can follow and much more. In addition, the library is also so very customizable. Custom groups, even dynamic groups, developer updates at the top and so much more. Steam does so many things right and does one thing especially right. You feel comfortable using Steam, not like Epic where you want to close the shit as soon as you pick up your free weekly game.

Steam Deck is more portable than the Switch. Both of them aren't fitting in a pocket but while Nintendo expects you to throw a switch in a bag and potentially scratch the screen, Valve includes a carrying case with a pouch for accessories like a charger.

Not to mention they have some stuff that isnt even on steam. Like Diablo or first 2 Warcraft games. Granted, if you can't deal with older games you probably dont care about those but to me, as a person who just got interested in playing old games that aren't available anywhere else, GOG is very good.
