1225 is so accurate to the locomotive in the Polar Express movie because it technically IS the locomotive in the movie. Warner Brothers approached the Steam Railroading Institute to ask if they could use the engine in the movie and SRI agreed and gave Warner Brothers copies of 1225’s blueprints so the animation team could make a mostly accurate copy of the engine. WB also used almost all the sounds of the 1225 under steam for the animated locomotive as well, with the only exception to that being the whistle, which is off of Sierra Railway number 3, and is a Lima 5 chime.

Looking good Barney! 1225 is truly a beautiful locomotive. I had the opportunity to turn a wrench on her, on more than one occasion. Just the grunt work, because I am still learning. I would not have it any other way. I truly enjoy being a volunteer for Steam Locomotive Institute (SRI). I miss my SRI family. Can't wait until this covid situation is (relatively) over... I noticed several key differences between the Real PM 1225 and the PE. In the movie, instead of Yanking back on the throttle to open it, The engineer pushed it forward to open the throttle. The Power Reverse was also changed from 1225's precision screw reverser that used a wheel to change the valve timing to a much more traditional Johnson/Quadrant bar with the Lever. Obviously the whistle chord has a unique design, and less obvious is the addition of a BTTF Flux Capacitor on the Fireman side of the cab. Some interesting mistakes I noticed were when the kids were driving the train, the Johnson bar lever was red and appeared to be installed sideways and was located on the engineer's left side. It later changed into a different thinner lever located on the emgineer's right side when the engineer took over the controls in the frozen lake scene. I also find it funny how the kids had trouble stopping the train because they were arguing over which was the brake, but Never bothered to close the throttle, literally just leaving it wide open. The engineer on the other hand was having trouble stopping the train because of a jammed throttle that snowballed into a bigger problem when the cotter pin fell, without ever touching the brake like.. The complete opposite of what the kids dealt with. And the fact a "Magic Train" would somehow have a burnt out light bulb with the headlight noticeably flickering in the "flat top tunnel" scene forcing the crew to make their way to the front of the locomotive to change the bulb, wide open throttle, and leaving a little girl who conveniently lost her ticket to supervise the controls as a punishment of some sorts. Also wanted to point out how when the engineer was trying to drive the train across the ice towards the tracks with his Bunta Fujiwara level drifting skills, the order in which he was engaging the throttle, reverser and brake were all mixed up. But I guess I shouldn't nit pick that far xD

Truely a great explanation of the basics of Locomotive controls. I love how this engine appears to be as close to original design, unlike so many of the restored locomotive we have here in Australia. Don't get me wrong, some re-engineering for better functionality is fine. But I have worked several different restored locomotives and every time there seems to be some unnecessary modifications that make the locomotive look hideous. Anyway Great work fellas, a Beautiful Engine.

You know, many of different types of U K origin steam-driven railway locomotives on 3 different types of gauges of track that are officially standard gauge @ 56.5" respectfully alongside several narrow-gauge @ 27"alongside minimum-gauge @ 18" respectfully of railway tracks! In fact, if memory actually completely serves me correctly, the officially well-knowingly famously popular Bluebell Railway in England as the officially well-known home of the famously well-known Stepney the Bluebell Engine himself that's been in operation SINCE 196O certainly happens to basically have been 1 of the U K'S own officially official well-known 1st preservation standard gauge(56.5") heritage railways!

BESIDES, IT'LL GET TO PULL PLENTY OF EXCURSION TRAINS ALONG THE BLUEBELL RAILWAY DESPITE IT'LL BE OFFICIALLY BURNING A BIG LOAD OF COAL WITH A HIGH THERMO OUTPUT ALONGSIDE HIGH SULFUR CONTENT MEANING THAT WHITE STEAM CERTAINLY WOULD BE CHUFFING FROM THE FUNNEL ON THE BOILER! PLUS, ONCE EVERY SINGLE DECADE, I'LL BE FITTING IT WITH A NEW BOILER WITH A FRESHLY RENEWED BOILER TICKET FOR EACH TIME THAT EACH OF THE OFFICIAL PREVIOUS BOILER TICKETS HAVE EXPIRED!

I seriously do personally happen to actually 1OO% scientifically know that the boiler ticket for a steam-driven railway locomotive's own official boiler actually lasts for exactly 1 whole entire decade by officially watching an official video on KZbin several times by NWR1991 that's officially titled A New Boiler For James where everyone helped to raise enough money as everyone gave what they had among 'em WHILST some couldn't give much to get a new boiler built specifically for James the Red Engine himself when his own official previous boiler ticket expired!

I just thought of a question ... How do you determine the current setting of the reverser wheel?
@FanRailer4 жыл бұрын
Two ways; the first is largely done by feel, listening to how the stack sounds, and by looking at your steam chest / back pressure gauge. Back pressure is the residual pressure of steam as it leaves the cylinder as exhaust. Excessive back pressure is wasteful and actually robs the locomotive of power as it basically begins to work against itself the higher your back pressure is. Most if not all railroads had guidelines on how much back pressure you could operate with going down the line. Starting, you normally throw the reverse lever or wheel into the full forward position, crack the throttle, release the brakes , and wait for the train to start moving. As the train increases speed, you open the throttle more, and start coming back on the reverse gear, making sure you stay under that prescribed back pressure limit (usually between 12 and 16 lbs). The second way, which is the high tech way, is through the use of a locomotive valve pilot. This was a device used in the cab that combined the function of the speedometer and valve gear setting vs speed indicator into one gauge. Through dynamometer car testing, etc., the optimal valve gear settings for each speed range could be plotted, then a cam calibrated to control the valve gear setting needle on the gauge. The valve gear needle itself was designed to show the engineer what the optimal speed was for his current valve gear setting. So as the gear was adjusted via the reverse lever or wheel, the valve gear needle would move to indicate what speed the current setting was most optimal for. This way, the engineer could achieve maximum operating efficiency by keeping the valve gear needle and the speedometer needle super-imposed.

I understand that steam engines need to have two means of injecting water into the boiler, but why does this engine have a cold water pump and a injector? Why not just use two of the same injector? Is it because the pump puts more water into the boiler than the engineer's injector?
@FanRailer4 жыл бұрын
The cold water pump supplies the feedwater heater (can be controlled by both the fireman or the engineer), which is somehow omitted from this video. Both methods of supplying the boiler with water should be about equal in capacity (~10,000 gallons per hour) The feedwater heater is the preferred method for supplying the boiler with water when the locomotive is in motion, as it uses the exhaust steam to pre-heat the water before pumping it into the boiler via the hot water pump. This saves live steam (which would be used if the engineers non-lifting injecter were used instead). When the engine is sitting idle, obviously there is no exhaust steam available , and so the feedwater heater is no better than the non-lifting injector in terms of economy of usage.

What does blowdown do, or needed for?
@voidjavelin2329 күн бұрын
The blowdown valve on a steam locomotive is used to remove sediment, sludge, and dissolved minerals that accumulate at the bottom of the boiler. Over time, impurities in the water can form scale and deposits inside the boiler, which can reduce efficiency and potentially cause damage. The blowdown valve allows the operator to periodically release a portion of the water and steam from the boiler, flushing out these impurities. It involves releasing a blast of steam and water out
