Fantastic - I just found this series in 2023 and I have always wanted to build a 6" Burrell. Well done mate, from New Zealand

Thanks! Not really sure how to explain that one... I just decided to 'get on with it' one day and then it was in steam before I knew it :-)

So... how do you go back down that hill with regard to keeping water over the crown sheet? Uphill would be easy to do that... but how to safely go back down the hill? Great videos!
@chriscrockerwhite
@chriscrockerwhite Ай бұрын
There are a few techniques I use. Put a lot of water in so it's fully covered - downside is that you then probably have too much water when you're at the bottom. Instead put a reasonable amount of water in such that it's sloshing about and covering the crown as the engine moves - you can force it to slosh about with the reverser if required. Also damper fully closed and firehole door cracked to bring a protective buffer of cold air between the fire and the crown. Probably in reality you use a blend of all three depending upon the situation, environment, weather etc., there's a lot of 'feel' and intuition in running an engine as I am sure you know :)

Love it, There's nothing like cruising around on something built by yourself, and it looks like you've done a proper job to. I would love build one myself but I've been on the web site and the monthly costs are more then my mortgage so if I'm honest. I'm going to be looking at building something a little bit cheaper as I would struggle to afford the 2 model never mind the 4 inch one. I've been looking, and dreaming about the 6 inch (half size) which if were honest will defiantly be out of my price range but there are very impressive. Might just stick to my old grey fergie instead.

Amazing stuff Chris, after completing your build would you still recommend one of the Steam Traction World kits?
@chriscrockerwhite
@chriscrockerwhite 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely - the kit enabled me to build an engine in the time I had available. People (used to?) talk a lot of shit about STW, but I'd just have a half completed engine now and for the foreseeable future if it wasn't for them. As it stands there are a few jobs to do to keep me busy but in the meantime I can enjoy steaming whenever I get a chance, which isn't very often these days.

@@chriscrockerwhite that's really good to hear, thanks for getting back to me. I've been watching your videos and honestly I'm finding them genuinely inspiring, even my wife is on board with me building an engine. How did you find the fit and ease of build on the STW kit? That's where I've heard there are problems!
@chriscrockerwhite
@chriscrockerwhite 2 жыл бұрын
@@doobypoppop7850 I thought it was fine. Maybe that's where the ideas that they are bad come from - if you treat it like Lego you're going to be disappointed (or at least would have been back in 2013), but if you treat each part as something to have your input on, and finish and fettle to the standard you want before fitting, you'll be fine. Honestly I wouldn't want to just bolt things together out of the box, the final engine will be so much better if you give each part some time and attention.

@chriscrockerwhite
@chriscrockerwhite 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Mandy thanks for the compliment! I have no idea really as it's more than just the kits - you need a fair amount of paints and other bits and pieces to do the work to a good standard. I was lucky enough to get in on the first run of the SCC kits which meant they were a little cheaper than the current list price.

ChriX Builds Thank you for the info but without paint and other bits what range would I be looking at my son has got quite a few tools and help to do the job now just need a rough price!!! As I don't know how to find one......... He has said that it would probably be better if he started with the 2 inch and over time upgraded to the 4 inch when he is ready!!!
@chriscrockerwhite
@chriscrockerwhite 6 жыл бұрын
I definitely wouldn't recommend getting a 2 inch if you really want (and have space etc. for) a 4 inch. It's a much different miniature, far less able to go on the road and round the rally field, although not impossible! As for prices try contacting Steam Traction World to see what the current deals are, they have various different options including a roller now which looks really cool.
