@czromxl318212 күн бұрын
It's never going to be an alternative to Windows, do you know why? Because it's for Steam deck! There already are great alternatives like Linux Mint. Every con he said in this video is irrelevant because it's not a con. You don't make a ship and list "does not fly" as a con. Most people don't want an alternative, they want competition so their OS becomes less shitty without them doing anything.
@jedipadawan702312 күн бұрын
Agreed. Windows was highly flawed compared to MacOS and OS/2 when Windows 3.0 dropped but it was 'good enough' and had the name 'Microsoft' behind it. And that was enough for Microsoft to completely take over. Functionally Google apps is way behind Microsoft office or Libreoffice but it's 'good enough' for Joe Public such that most people I know are no longer aware of Microsoft Office. "I just do Google." As long as you have 'good enough', enough of a brand name and enough publicity you can take over with even an inferior product. indeed, history shows that marketing wins over technical brilliance almost every time.

SteamOS becoming it's own distribution IS a big deal. First and foremost, the handheld market that is now a dominant windows market will have a second "better" option, pre installed on the device. preinstallation is king in this segment. Second, Valve is using this opportunity to knock on Nvidia's and Intel door to help improve and work on the driver compatibility issues, so that these drivers will work with gamescope and other features like recording etc... This to make sure that whoever installs SteamOS, you will have a good experience. From the peeps that gave you Proton... I jumped ship into linux with my first ever gaming PC this month, went with Nobara, any and all advancements by Steam to Proton are welcome and the numbers rising for players on linux/SteamOS as a plataform give visibility that may put games with Anti-cheat incompatibilities under pressure to make them SteamOS compatible and in doing so allow everyone else in linux to play them. Its a net positive the easier it gets the more people qe can convince to make the jump, the more that join the louder our voice gets and the more siginificant catering to that market share becomes. We can make Linux more than viable for gaming but those of us who were willing to open the control panel every now and then on windows have to take the plunge to make it easier for those who wont, just like those could modify/upgrade GPU drivers did for us who couldn't/didn't know how before us

First of all, third party publishers shouldn't make it a hard requirement to have their shitty launchers in the first place. I'm already playing the game through steam so I shouldn't be further inconvenienced by using additional bloatware on top. Seriously, screw publishers for even trying to pull this nonsense off. I have steam and i have a steam account. That's literally EVERYTHING i should need to play games on my PC. I shouldn't need to download any additional launchers, and i shouldn't need to create any additional accounts for those additional launchers. I actually hope Gabe will make it so SteamOS just ignores the third party launchers entirely so the customers can actually just play the games they purchased without jumping through annoying hoops anymore.

I believe SteamOS will allow the installation of flatpaks, which can help with adding things like controller customization apps (if they are packaged as flatpaks). Also, SteamOS has a desktop mode, and in that mode, if you install other launchers (like Heroic), you can access games from Epic Store, etc. A lot of stuff can be installed via flatpaks for gaming on Linux, actually. And as long as they reside in the user's $HOME directory, they don't get wiped out by SteamOS updates. The bigger problem is that publishers of competitive titles still mostly refuse to allow their anti-cheat to function on Linux, which means Linux users cannot play those games.

If you talking about SteamOS solely for 50/50 about Gaming and Desktop, then all what you said is not wrong. Since most of the "Feature" is the gaming side of things. So, the desktop side of things can be later or they decide to "limit" since in theory could break the whole gaming experience side of things. But I can see they could unlock the desktop side of things and make it seamles to jump from big picture mode and desktop and jump from app to app with Controllers or Mouse and Keyboard. The launch of the Beta will be huge source for this kind of things for Valve. and tbh other game launcher can be good and bad for Valve, so they choose to "ignore it", and relied on the community instead. they didn't block some of the app anyway, and NVIDIA just add their GFroce NOW to Steam, so there is that. I think Valve choose to AFK and wait for the other Launcher to make their own Launcher on SteamOS. They do the right things.

I tried both Nobara and Bazzite on my AMD-based Alienware Alpha R2(Steam Machine, but I couldn't get either to install. After the first restart, it just took me to an empty dialogue screen. I gave up and aborted the install.

5:45 this is the problem with Linux support from developers, instead of focusing on a few distros in this case Stream OS every other "Linux expert/user" jumps at the opportunity to promote their flavor of choice (distro), for people that know the basics of Linux and distros this is no issue, but for the wider market common users/investors they only see a very very small user base fragmented into thing they don't understand.
@m.heyatzadeh12 күн бұрын
I think since Valve's main focus is on handheld devices, SteamOS won't add much to Linux desktop. Although with handhelds becoming more popular, more games will be playable on Linux without tlthe need to tinker and that's a good thing for Linux desktop.

Disagree. Reading a lot of comments online about how people are waiting for SteamOS to switch from Windows. People now want a replacement for Windows in a way they did not before but want a big brand name and 'One version' to switch to as a standard. A lot of comments on this and people waiting for SteamOS as their replacement OS. [Me? I am happy with MX-Linux KDE but gamers - which I am not really - in general want a name.]

I really hope they make a os that is easy to use for the averege user like me so the switch from Windows is easier and not so scary

I do not believe that Valve could be on the hook for anti trust if they release SteamOS as a generic ISO. A few points. It would likely be a free download and not shipped with any system integrater PCs. So it would always be the user's choice to install SteamOS. As well the issues with 3rd party launchers on Linux are the responsibility of those publishers, not Valve. This is more a generalized Linux issue and access to desktop mode and alternatives like Bottles, Lutris, installing a launchers .exe in a Steam Proton prefix enables users to ''add 3rd party apps'' to take terms from the Apple/Google court cases. If Valve shipped a console like set top box with no desktop mode access, then I think there would be cause for an anti trust investigation.

If they release a good compatible version for desktop, I will delete anything related to the Microsoft Spyware Organisation from my machines. I am even willing to pay for it.

So you're trying to tell me that this is not the "silver bullet" because on a current public version of their system made specifically for handhelds there are a few rough edges, that Valve themself say they're working on them and are part of the reason there's not an official desktop release? It's like saying the next AMD GPUs lineup might not be great because the current one doesn't have features that Nvidia has... Let them cook, let's see what happens instead of complaining about the things nobody but Valve has any idea on.

Taking the steamdeck (or steam OS) for a PC is a mistake. The hardware could change, but the thing is playing games and that's it. Juat because it can, doesn't mean it should.
@lucius197611 күн бұрын
On those handhelds SteamOS is superior to Windows already. Granted, some games do not work but that is the fault of the game developers. Once SteamOS will get track it will be fixed

If Valve could make something like Lutris that come with preinstalled scripts for Ubisoft Launcher,Epic Games Launcher, GOG Galaxy etc... like when booting into SteamOS for the first time , we should get interface with all these launchers and we connect to our accounts and then all games it should be in library with all games from different stores in one place with a small logo on the cover of each game to know from which launcher it would be installed! this will be great and much easier overall! sorry for my english !
@OraOraOra12 күн бұрын
I get your Point and I'd also like this, but you have to understand, that Valve is a company. Linux is still an open Plattform, Valve at least doesnt hinder you from downlading 3rd Party stuff. I mean they enabled Flathub, ship with distrobox and nix packagemanager and they allow you to add stuff as non steam Game.
@MichaelNROH12 күн бұрын
I'm not sure they can, since it's probably kind of infringing on some licenses whereas a launcher is not downloaded officially
@AyaWetts12 күн бұрын
Why would they? Their main goal is getting people to use Steam and buy Steam games... I sure wouldn't do any official support for competitors if I was at Valve, its just silly. Its not like it hard to get any of those to work on any distro, even have those all working on my Steam Deck.
@realskyquest12 күн бұрын
@@MichaelNROH There is umu launcher by open wine components, it has glorious eggroll, lutris, bottles, heroic devs working together to use a steam runtime to run windows games with protonfixes automatically applied and other nice features. Its gonna be integrated into bottles next and its already available on Lutris and Heroic.
@Moskeeto12 күн бұрын
It shouldn't be Valve's responsibility to ensure their competition works on Linux. It should be the responsibility of that competition. At the moment, there's already plenty of user-made tools to do the work for them anyway.

As long the Linux community prioritizes their own ego above all, with bad business models and even more fragmentation, there is no light at the end of this tunnel yet… People just want something that works, windows (even how awful it is…) does the job…

man i hope they put some effort into steam os, windows is so bad lately, they always release junky updates instead of betatesting them first, and it triggers the f out of people.

At the same time, I myself don't think it's a big deal at all. But I've also heard of some people who switch to Linux because of steam os. All in all, I don't think it can be bad for the Linux desktop.

Problem 3rd party launcher Valve can do everything they can fix the problem if 3rd party launcher keep breaking after each update it's mainly fault on 3rd party not making sure works with proton or make their own for linux. It's why Heroic and Lutris maybe way to go for a long time until linux market share is bigger. If valve do drop steam os for everyone will be few months after gamescope just working with out any problem with nvidia.

I know that steamos is not a replacement for Windows but I think it's pretty good I have my own steam machine my mini PC that I built and if you seen DDR3 and it's going to use a Intel Xeon CPU and an 8 gigabyte card that I was able to find and it works pretty good for me was the games that I can currently run I don't have any reason to be with Windows anymore but I'm not saying that everybody needs to switch because there's applications that you're not going to find a Linux or for some stuff you're not going to find support but still I think it's a great 👍 alternative to Windows 10 and 11
@mattias123412 күн бұрын
Excuse me but I have to play the devil's advocate now. it's not Valve's job to make sure that third party game launchers work in steamos, but it's them who should ask Valve to put their stores in steamos and invest in linux. But we know that it will not happen.
@amputatedhairstrands11 күн бұрын
@@mattias1234 spot on it doesn't make sense for valve to put effort into other stores if they put no effort in themselves, valve has been doing its part

It would probably be a good idea though, since this can end in three ways: - Publishers just make Linux ports of their launchers - Each publisher makes their own "SteamOS" - Publishers sue Steam for not giving them a fair shot by first opening Steam I think that 2 or 3 are more likely to happen with SteamOS, since everyone seems to want to de-throne Valve

This is part of the problem with people. If you just want a gaming OS then that’s all you’re going to do this might be great. If you want to do more like stream, productivity, creation, etc just use a user friendly Linux or Windows. Some of us just want a gaming OS for our gaming PC. We don’t want or need all this other crap, but here we go again. People want more and more. Here comes the bloat. People want their cake and someone else’s cake too. Just use Windows 11 and stop trying to bloat SteamOS. That or learn how to use two seperate computers.

Implementing proper user authentication, and full disk encryption should be a priority. Once Steam OS has that, I honestly see no issues for a large number of users opting for Steam OS as their main system.
