Really liked the video. Dad passed when I was just 17 but one thing I remember him telling me was not to skimp on three things when working on my car. Tires, brakes, and wheel bearings. I took that to heart. Great to see a video.

This is really helpful. I have a 1970 MGB and am learning how to do things like replace the bearings. This video was a life saver. Thank you!!!!

I must say this is the best video on KZbin describing the setting up of the front wheel bearing on a MGB. Your video is highly informative . Your skills are amazing. I will be copying off you. Love the fuel filter video. Going to purchase a flaring tool because of your video.

This car is the perfect addition to the channel! I have ‚59 frogeye sprite languishing in my parents barn in the UK which is in dire need of a full restoration. But for that I would need some serious welding equipment and skills. Not to mention a stack of dabloons in the old oak chest.

Thank you Phill, while I don’t own an MG I did enjoy your detailed and most helpful strip down and rebuild of her hubs and bearings. There are some similarities to our old land rover’s, but nice to see the important differences. I hope you are keeping well, given all that is going on around. Best wishes

I just replaced my bearings, races and seals on my ‘79 MGB. I used the shims to get the right amount of ‘tunk’ (thanks John Twist for that technical term) and then I shot for 60ft lbs of torque. Having taken A&P courses I really appreciate your approach to this task 👍🏻. Thx so much for your video 👍🏻🙂

One correction to the talk track. The axle thread is an 11/16”-16 thread. I had to redo mine, too, and did extensive research before I bought a special chaser for this unusual thread.

How did you harden and temper the chaser? I second the MGB being an excellent addition to this channel. Looking forward to more!

Plenty of heat! At home, it's a bit of an inexact science but you need to consider the heat soak time, the temperature range to be held and the tempering time/ heat relative to the size of the part. You can get colour charts which help you determine the temperature the part has reached. In this case, I just used an oil quench.

What's the point of initially tightening the castle nut until the bearings just about bind, before the shimming step? I don't understand what is happening inside with the bearings, that this step is suggested. Is it to ensure the bearing seats (tapered rings we pressed in) are fully seated ? I'm completing my hub and bearing job this upcoming weekend. I currently have both front hubs removed. Then I'll install the new laced wheels and tires (had stored in my basement for a few months) on the '72. Thanks for the video. My channel is Anthony hfe for vids on my classic cars and vintage audio. Happy Motoring !

I have a 75 MGB want to change to wire wheel can you show me how

I no longer have the car, but you'll need to change the hubs. No idea if the stub axles are the same, but the parts book will tell you that and if do, the procedure is the same as shown here.

Can I trouble you for the make/model of that dial indicator? thank you.Kevin

Hi Kevin, forgive me not watching the video through again to see it, but I use Mitutoyo and Mercer DTI's, the former is probably the better make. The mag base stands are old "Eclipse" models, worth seeking out as they are very good quality. Whilst I have some cheap modern mag base DTI kits, they are frustratingly poor quality, but they will get the job done.

Is a chaser a die, like you would use to cut a new thread?
@steamwally
@steamwally 4 жыл бұрын
Very similar, but designed just just clean up a thread that has been damaged.
