I’ve got a nasty rattling noise in third gear. Would you think this would be a bearing potentially?
@steamwally7 күн бұрын
It's always difficult identifying Series gearbox malfunction noises, you'll only really know when you pull it all to bits- sometimes you can identify the bits if you've drained out some chunky oil... The gearbox section of the Haynes Manual sums it up rather nicely, " The decision to overhaul must be taken based upon the amount of noise and malfunction the driver can tolerate." In the case of my old gearbox, the rear mainshaft bearing housing had spun in the casing and the noise/ vibration was worst for what ever reason in third... you could have a wide array of faults- if concerened, take it to bits.
@jameslast29226 күн бұрын
@@steamwally watching your overhaul footage, I did find what looked like a flat metal clip which you did mention will probably wear out at some point int! This may well be the cause of the knocking? Potentially.. looks like it’s coming out.. thanks very much. Keep up the videos really helpful.

Did you load the gearbox in first and then the transfer box in the end? I've just been considering if that's a sensible plan. I'm thinking I could then run it through the gears and check everything's okay at that point to minimise the amount of disassembly required if it isn't.
@steamwally16 күн бұрын
I fitted the gearbox, then the transfer box, then the overdrive and then tested before installing the prop shafts. Having fitted transmission units in Land Rovers whole and in units, I much prefer the later method. Be aware that without load, when you test the transmission you'll hear all kinds of nasty backlashy sounds- loading up the drivetrain with the transmission brake should hush it up a little which will give you some idea how it's going. TBH, you won't really know until you're rolling down the road.

Want to know how the parabolic cope if the back is loaded up. You mentioned the ride height settle after 18 konths of use. How much load do you usually carry to your shows?
@steamwally18 күн бұрын
Four years on, the springs are doing great! Just about approaching the time to think about changing some bushes but I don't think that's too sad. I'd estimate the normal load carried to be around 400kg- I should think you could double that and not have a problem, with the springs at least..

Yes, as your other video - that's an ACR port job. I saw the stamping. ACR manifold too. Suspect you're strangling it a bit with the 2.25 manifold. It came with a 2.5 manifold, was it smashed at the stud?
@somebloke556521 күн бұрын
Question? Looks like you used the Series rather than the 2.5 manifold. Agreed it'd mean moving the down-pipe back to mate the 2.5 manifold to the Series down-pipe, but is there another reason you went for the Series manifold?

How the Land Rover jumping out of reverse gear? I built mine about 12 years ago with a wrongly machined reverse gears and it’s got worse over the years. It will only manage about 10 feet in reverse now so it’s going to come out. It’s annoying as the rest of the box is still perfect

Are there any particular nuances when removing the Fairey overdrive and fitting the Roamerdrive? Every youtube I've seen so far has shown one being fitted for the first time so I'm wondering if there are any additional problems, other than the Fairey being a heavier lump than the cover plate to move out of the way. Is it as straight forward as undo bolts, pull it off, follow installation instructions?

Everything you need to know is in the instructions, follow them carefully and you'll be fine.

Hi there. Thanks for all the great videos. I've found them very helpful in rebuilding my Stage 1v8 Landrover. I have just rebuilt and fitted a Fairey overdrive - the later, evidently stronger LT95 variant. It goes well, little noise. What I have noticed though is that it gets very hot - too hot to hold my hand on. Does your one get that hot during highway operation? Thank you.

not that rolling back seem's to be an issue but gypsy's would pull a bit of wood up steep hill's tied so it drag's just behind the rear axle and if the horse need's to reat or stop it can as it act's like a chock the wood is the width of the axle and a bit extra simple idea

My first restoration project, never had a gearbox apart before, but now you have provided great detail on how I need to put it back together. Just wondered what type of grease you used. I also noticed that my oil thrower was out by approx the same as yours.

lol, why do I find your videos just after I need them! Your transfer box series saved my sanity and I freed up my MAP hub just before watching this and finding out how it really works:
@raygale41982 ай бұрын
These Jimnys are selling like hot cakes in Australia, when released they were selling for A$26,000 on road drive away, wait lists quickly blew out to many months. Suzuki seeing a winner have been bumping the price up steadily, they now sell for high A$30's and still are moving as fast as they can be imported. Owners of the early units have been selling their second hand cars for more than they paid for it new. The Jimny and its grand father Sierra have always been very competent reliable light 4wds. Getting the job done easier and cheaper than huge heavy fuel guzzling wagons. A good practical car that with a set of more off road rated tyres will go anywhere.

The 1.6 petrol on the old suzuki swift sport (to 2012 I think) was a great engine. Always thought they should have put a turbo on it and went from 5 gears to 6 and that little car would have been amazing

@steamwally2 ай бұрын
I agree in that it would be great to see a back to basics, British built vehicle along the same lines, though sadly I think JLR's market is now a world away from that of the new Jimny. I know these are popular but they are not selling in huge numbers at all, hence the very small number that have been imported to Britain, quite a niche vehicle in reality. I really hope they decide to keep selling them here, I feel the Jimny is the perfect vehicle for our roads, year round.

Very impressive vehicle. We were looking at a 2024 Jeep Compass recently but the price tag at about 40K USD was rather prohibitive. Especially now that we are retired. There are zero used ones to be found. They don`t last long on the lots, sold often in one or two days. And they are ridiculously high priced even so. This one suits you well.
@steamwally2 ай бұрын
The cost of vehicles has become rather frightening! Not really so very long ago I bought my first car new off the dealer forecourt for £6k... how things have changed. It was affordable to work for that, I think the last Fiesta's were about £22k for a basic model when they stopped producing those. Outrageous!

I know they stopped doing "saloon" Jimnys because of emissions regulations, but I have seen a few with four adults on board and I don't think rear leg room was a priority! Surprised they didn't delete the side windows when it became a commercial model though. Cheers
@steamwally2 ай бұрын
I think you can actually get panels to replace the windows if you want to, personally I quite like the visibility and it's quite light in the cabin too. TBH I think these make so much more sense as a light commercial, it's certainly far more useful to me.

With some of the comments you was making, I don’t believe this engine ran all day and approximately 1 L of fuel it would also be far more interesting if you had a suitable size pulley to drive either a car alternator or a permanent magnet generator and run the engine and shown everyone how many amps was being produced to charge the battery and it would also be able to see the engine on the road on and off load as you connected and disconnected the charging system. Not sure whether you’ve ever thought how many people, would buy an engine just to start it up and watch it tick over for four or five hours doing nothing that is not what engines was originally meant to do assuming your engine is 4 or 5 hp a Reasonable Load would be at least half it’s maximum horsepower viewers would be able to see it go under load and see how well it performed. You have done a sterling job with regards cleaning and getting the engine into an excellent state of health all we need to see is it now working and doing possibly the job? It was meant to do? I hope you are not offended cheers Derek.
