Hello! I am a museum curator from Nottingham, England and have been working on a project for the last 15 months researching the local history of printing. We have several 19th century platen & lithographic printers and I am researching their operation and how the different parts relate to each other. This video was a great help! Thank you so much!!

My grandfather did this type of printing for years. My aunt still has his printing equipment. I am very happy to see people utilizing this type of printing still.

I did this for many years also. I was a printing press operator for the City of Los Angeles.

If I want to change the color, do I have to clean those rollers and how do I clean them? Did you remove the wheels and wash them with detergent?

Your doing some really nice work, I was amazed to see your manual cutter. I spent 38 years in the printing profession & had not seen a manual cutter before, very cool. Nice video, Thanks

My Dad had a print shop I ran a Chandler and Price 12 X18 letterpress hand feed. Started setting hand type when I was 12. Ran a office press too.

It's a proof press!! Letter press is a craft! I was a craftsman on all letter presses as well as offset! I started in printing at 16 running letter and small duplicators! 38 years and I seen the transformation from letter to large offset when I retired! It was a good run for me until automation shewed the field!! Now presses can be ran by owners instead of hiring a pressman! Sad!!

I remember I started die cutting on a 12x15 1945 Kluge but then they brought in a 1968 SBB Heidelberg cylinder and now everything is super different now. Still super cool but I've never made my way to printing. Hopefully I'll get there to printing

Very nice and a pleasure to watch. Your shop looks a lot like my own - C&P,s Vandercooks - even down to the old ATF Chief in the background. Of course, I let my Chief go years ago and do only letterpress these days - mostly using hand-set foundry type. Not to say lithography is dead, but I prefer letterpress, myself. But if I *were* still doing offset, the Chief is the press I would want to have. It's the best of that size press ever made, imho. I spent today doing a boring number/perf job on my Heidelberg Windmill, but even that simple job was fun...

Wow, that's nice! there's definitely something about Letterpress. more artisan & personal looking than offset-litho. All you need now is a working Linotype machine to complete the set!

I work in printing for 15 years, I know the printers that have worked with your own machines, are now retired. I have always worked modern machines, I would like to compliment you for your tenacity and passion to work the vintage machines. I would like to ask you why you pushed to continue this profession? Now we continue to use digital printing though the old machines are always useful for the die cutting of small sizes and low quantity.

Thanks Pablo! Yes, its very common to name machines, since they always seem to have a life of their own :)

In Letterpress printing, if you can FEEL, the printing it has been done incorrectly. My father would walk through the shop when I was 8 years old, pull a sheet from the feeder, feel it with his hands, if he could feel any of the letters, he would throw the entire job into the garbage can, and tell me to START OVER, and do it correctly. Correct letterpress printing, you don't "feel" impressions in the paper.

1 final comment.... wearing that wedding ring, is a good way to lose your finger. My family owned the largest commercial print shop in the state of Ohio for over 100 years. I am an engineer in the trade, and I can tell you story after story of those who lost fingers, hands, and entire arms doing what "everyone does" until the day comes, it happens. Don't wear that ring. I in fact, new a guy who reached up to pull 1 ream of paper off the shelf, he stepped up 1 step. When he stepped down, the weight of his body, and in that split second of the edge of the shelf catching his ring, removed his entire finger. And the problem with that accident, is that it pulls the nerves out of your arm, out the hole in your finger, so sometimes, you loose the use of your arm. I see I'm 11 years late.

You most certainly need a motorised guillotine/cutter. There are many beautiful compact ones available. While a nice vintage cutter should be part of you hardware inventory, that cut you made with hand driven pressure seemed awkward.
