How to electrify a steel tongue drum (without a 1/4" Jack):
Use a Piezo Contact Microphone Pickup or a
MAGNETIC Contact Microphone:

This will also work to make an electric kalimba or acoustic guitar! And of course makes recording a steel tongue drum or recording a handpan now very easy. Or you can play the steel tongue drum through an amp as well!

Can you provide a link for the double-sided drum you are playing at the beginning of the video? What is the scale for the flip side (starting at 2:47)? How does it sound playing fingerstyle?

@@DylanFerno Yes. Sorry, that probably seems like a really basic question! I play acoustic, and want to move into electric playing. I'm by no means a musician so just trying to figure out how I'd do that in the simplest way. What would you recommend for a complete beginner?

Would you say it is worth it to get the electro-acoustic New wave, or just buy the acoustic one and buy a cheaper magnetic pickup? 🙃

I would get whichever one you like the sound of and note selection the best. The New Wave drum really has a unique sound, plus more notes, a good built in jack etc. ..but if you only want it because of it's pickup, yes, you can use the magnetic mics on any tongue drum. That being said, I only have experience with the Etsy magnetic mic (link is in the description), which works great, but not any cheaper magnetic mics that may be available. The cheaper pick-ups from Amazon, like in this video, may struggle with getting a loud enough output. @@DylanFerno the one for the second link you posted above, if you go to the 'Customer questions & answers' section, someone asked if the drum is steel or copper and the reply from ralph j. kirkhart jr. says 'magnets will not work on these...' So I'm wondering if they are using a new alloy now & if this is a general trend in manufacturing.

@@rhyothemisprinceps1617 Oh I see it now. Strange because I have the exact same drum as you can see in the video but I ordered from Ali Express and not Amazon. I would think those generic brand drums are all manufactured in the same way so I imagine it would be magnetic and the customer who answered the question could be wrong, but I can not guarantee it as I ordered from a different seller. If you plan to tune the drum or use a magnetic pick up it is important otherwise it should be okay as is anyway.
