Rob, you spoke of distortion on these. With an actual handpan, the tones are more clear. Sustain is crazy on the tongue drums, and I imagine it doesn't pick it up well (unique timbre on them as well). You CAN run a handpan with distortion (an actual handpan though, dimples and ovals, not tongues) -----> a small experiment I ran using guitar rig through Logic - soundcloud.com/mike-mascioli-1/the-ideal-the-actual-2 - any distortion you hear is the handpan, just playing chords with it. Melodies are made with the same handpan I used distortion on. Don't even bs and say these don't djent!

I used to play metal on my sazlar but I don't have any videos of it. It's not hard. Rob, if you've ever played mandolin or better yet octave mandolin (or Irish bouzouki) you tune a saz Gg-DD-Aaa as concert standard which are the same 3 lower courses on an octave mandolin (except w/o octave pairings). Electro baglamas are sick and since you like low tuned stuff, the Divan Saz is a bigger, lower instrument of the same family.

@SoulSecureOfficial7 жыл бұрын
If I'm upfront, I don't really play metal any more and I'm also not really a great musician to begin with. For one thing, back when I played metal, I was a bass player and so I can't sweep pick or do much fanciness like you would expect from a guitarist. (plus, I was into, goth, black, folk and nu metal styles which is completely different from djent and NWOAHM and you aren't generally competing in the olympics in these genres if you get my drift) Nowadays, I play mandolin on my Church's worship team and the last show I played was as mandolin in a Christian Bluegrass band. As a solo artist I make Christian lounge/downtempo/chillout. The main reason it was easy for me to convert metal rhythm and melody playing into saz was it's tuning scheme and the fact that you spend a lot of time playing melodies up and down the neck. I'm pretty rusty on saz as well and was never anywhere close to as good as a trained player. I used to be able to play some Ahmet Koch songs on saz, but I tend to fumble around the finger board a lot :P To sum it up, I suck at music and the instrument I used to be intermediate on (bass) I pretty much don't play anymore.

There are low quality 10 note tongue drums for under $100 now They are still very beautiful to play, just might not be able to play some of the more advanced techniques due to excessive reverberations
@danw19554 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't imagine distortion would work with one of these since there is so much reverb and overtones between notes. What probably *would* sound cool though, would be some sort of ethereal chorus effect. I like the ability to tune them with magnets though. I'm guessing they'd have to be high strength neodymium magnets, so they don't slip when you're playing.😉

What's a bit of a shame is that a tongue drum is originally an instrument made from recycled material, usually a propane tank. So to see it sold for 400 $ (for the 14 inch one) is a bit sad... But I guess if there is a market for it...
@maximilianbehrens41017 жыл бұрын
Nicolas Bertin but are these instruments also made from recycled material?
@SilvaDreams7 жыл бұрын
Most likely, though a ton of steel now days is recycled metal. Though even if they used new metal stamping these things out is not exactly an expensive process nor is painting them work 400$ of work for 15$ of paint and metal
@AlchemistTongueDrums7 жыл бұрын
A couple of thoughts on that having made a few--I doubt Idiopan uses a propane tank. Like Hapi, they probably get a slightly thicker steel custom made and have them cut with an automated plasma cutter or laser and that ain't cheap to streamline the process like that. Also, the industrial neodynamium magnets they use? I guarantee that's at least 40-60 bucks per set for those good industry-standard magnets. Additionally, that's an epoxy powdered coat. That wasn't just sprayed on--they had to spray on powder and then COOK it on at 400-450 degrees while most likely hanging it with some apparatus that grips inside the hole so you can't see the spots where it was suspended from in the oven. Either the drums are MIG welded by hand and then meticulously grinded down also by hand to make a flying saucer shape, or it was manufactured in one piece which I doubt, or if it was it would be very expensive and complex. Next there's a bit of theory involved. You have to pick a scale that's high pitched to get a good tuneable range of multiple scales. On top of all this you're factoring the costs of maintaining a website, good recording and video equipment for demonstrations, shipping, mallets, optional rubber mute rings, bags, AND even the option to install pickups that allow you to plug it into an amp! They do all of this and have the drums ready to ship for your convenience versus the traditional guys who can take up to a month to make your drum--or longer if they're dishonest about their shipping time, here too I speak from experience. Furthermore the 400 dollar tag is for the top-of-the-line drum the offer. They give you tons of options as far as size, tuneable or not, and pickups or not. Now with all this work and effort put in, they ABSOLUTELY deserve the profit that comes with a 400 dollar price tag. I feel like a schill for Idiopan at this point, but the truth is that I've made a handful of these drums by hand so I recognize and respect firsthand the quality that these guys have achieved with their tongue drums. And don't worry, if you go on etsy or ebay you can still find $200 ones made by hand. I might even start selling them myself on the side. Take care.
@thugasaurusrex60047 жыл бұрын
Lol if you knew how much of a pain in the ass they are to make then you'd know why they're so expensive. They are the bottoms of propane tanks but if you mess one thing up on them it's very hard to go back and fix them lol you basically need to start over.
