At least I did not have to try them in front of people, would have been so humiliating to be approached by some guitar player while playing and hear him whispering in my ear.

I guess you can throw me in that pool, as well. I never used them but I know a lot of chicken pickers grow their nails out, which is a no for me, so I assumed people used these like fingernail substitutes.

Using bare fingers provides a much better dynamic range than plastic finger picks. The sound of metal scraping just doesn’t appeal to me. However, I’m thinking about cutting my long, hard fingernails because they raise eyebrows in professional settings, there’re just aren’t very presentable. I suppose I’ll have to make do with plastic fingernails for now. Thank you for the video, very informative !

@murraysmusic51213 жыл бұрын
i have a solution. you can either raise the neck of the guitar by putting the in between your left and right leg, similar to that of a classical guitar. you can also rotate the pick on the index finger so it’s almost on the corner of your index fingers nail. those tend to work for me. hope that helps
@aaronvannatta93294 жыл бұрын
so the main purpose of fingerpicks is to preserve your fingertips? I'm a beginner, but I'm interested in genres that happen to use almost exclusively fingerstyle picking, and I feel like it's a difficult thing to pull off in the long term without growing your nails out. For whatever reason I thought fingerpicks were meant to take place of the nail, is that wrong? Might be a stupid question, but I dunno what I dunno, y'know?
@cameronh1234564 жыл бұрын
It just gives more of a tone than the skin of the fingers would give.
@PeterKeaneMusic4 жыл бұрын
Hi Aaron - there are various options besides fingerpicks...bare fingers ( Mississippi John Hurt ), natural fingernails ( Merle Travis / Chet Atkins ), fake nails/extensions ( James Taylor or Pete Anderson) - just need to experiment and see what you like best. When I was playing in noisy bars every night I needed to really cut through AND not get blisters so fingerpicks really were essential. Nowadays I typically use bare fingers with just a bit of nail.
@gracebcct4 жыл бұрын
@@PeterKeaneMusic I do believe his question was focused, like I was that the pick is on the meat of the finger not replacing the finger nail. So the question was, is it more difficult to hit the string with the bottom meaty part verses the fingernail itself which is what most of us beginners are trying to accomplish. As I picture it in my mind I think I can see where it would be easier to pick from the underneath meaty part rather than the nail. Thank you so much for your response. I'm looking forward to hearing from you.

On and off I've been wanting to learn finger style picking for guitar as just strumming chords gets really boring for me. Yet my hold up is how the HELL do you actually finger pick, like what the method do you use. I refuse to grow out my finger nails as that would be super annoying for me. I also do not like the idea of nail extensions. Using a regular pick I feel is limiting cause I always wonder how guitar players get such a full sound if they're not using a pick and if they are, it's probably limiting being stuck with just that one note at a time, like what if you have to play two as part of the bass?? I'm understanding more that most guitar players have their nails grown out, or they're using some type of extension. If only I had a finger style picking guide because it's too overwhelming to learn it on my own...

@@yogadaily9864 it’s perfectly fine to just use bare fingers. I did that for many years and still do around home if I don’t need a lot of volume.

The metal ones sound too grindy whereas the plastic ones are nice and doinky. The metal ones remind me of playing with a quarter when you can’t find a pick. Anybody remember those days? 😅
@bobgreen81422 жыл бұрын
Very useful! I play fingerstyle and like a bit of fingernail for crispness and to protect my fingers but have a tendency to break nails, usually non-guitar related. Also, I play bass which ideally should be done without fingernail interference, so maybe a set of picks would suit me. I wasn't keen on the scrape of the metal picks so I will try a set of plastic picks.

Fingerpick scraping on strings is the reason I hate to use fingerpicks. It takes away from the the delivery of the performance..
@murraysmusic51213 жыл бұрын
there are a couple of ways that you get around it. i typically rotate the pick on my index finger and leave the middle as is. if you don’t want to do that, you can place the guitar in between your left and right leg, very similar to how a classical guitar is held. both work, but you might need to experiment around to get your preferred position.
