How to make a steel drum...
The steel pan / steel drum - a fascinating instrument. I go to buy a brand new one and ask the maker how it's made and tuned
I find out that the making and tuning process is very difficult and skilled work, but the tuner - Toussaint Clarke - manages to explain it in layman's terms.
Toussaint explains how steel drums / steel pans are made and talks a little bit on how to tune a steel drum.
He talks about how to sink the metal to make the steel pan, and stretching the surface area of the drum. The metal has been known to burst in this process.

When I was in school, end of 70's in the music room there was a half-finished steel drum. Some kids and the teacher had tried to make one, but after a few years the kids quit and the teach gave up. Shame, but evidence that this isn't easy.

So you can maybe estimate the right size for the notes using volume ande resonant frequency. This is amazing wizardry, they are taking something that is so hard to model mathmatically and doing it implicitly! I love it!

Something about that bass sound. Been playing since the 6th grade. Bass And Double Tenor were my pans! I can scale away on a tenor. But that double tenor had a splendid sound!
