In this video we're checking out Steeleye Span. We looked them up for a second and saw that they are an English Folk Rock band. This should be truly interesting. Enjoy!

I grew up on Steeleye Span, Fairport Convention and Pentangle- the holy trinity of English folk-rock (and the originators of the genre). The singer here, Maddy Prior, has one of the purest voices around, and still sounds great. Another of their songs which is pure joy to listen to is One Misty Moisty Morning, but for something darker you must check out King Henry or Long Lankin.

Not Irish folk... ENGLISH folk (and on Come Ye O'er Fra France, Scottish folk... if you wanna watch this one make sure you get one with translation). Saw them twice in Ottawa in the 70s. Maddy looks very ordinary, until she starts to dance... then captures your heart. Well, my heart. Peace, love and bellbottoms from over Niagara way.

This reached Number 5 here in the UK Chart in 1975 when i was 7. They did have another hit earlier in 1972 called 'Gaudete'. This got to Number 14 in the Christmas Chart :)

Remember buying this album. There's a small piece of card that comes with it so you can view their faces on the cover at the correct angle. Not an Irish song at all, it's of Engish origin, as is the majority of the band and the songs they sing. Although most people didn't or couldn't tell the difference? Saw them twice, once in around '73 and again, forty years later. Still brilliant.

English folk rock gods👏👏👏👏👏...there are distinct differences between English,Irish and Scottish folk songs,especially the old original songs of which this is......Irish tend to generally be happy,Scottish tend to be reels which just make your feet tap,the English tended to be sad......but thete are always exception s...........love the reaction.

You need to see their live performance of Cam ye o’re fae France. You won’t understand the words, it’s about the Jacobite rebellion. Maddy’s voice is so pure and you will love it when she is dancing around the stage; hope you get the right live performance.

Folk Rock was a very popular genre at the time. I was a big fan of Steeleye Span and you have now reacted to their two biggest hits Gaudete and this one. They have some fantastic album tracks though. Some of my favourites are The Saucy Sailor, Fighting For Strangers The Boys Of Bedlam, Blackleg Miner and Alison Gross.

Steeleye Span are not ‘underrated’ by lovers of folk rock. This is a label lazily applied whenever referring to anything not in the popular mainstream. A band does not have a long career and large following by being underrated.

Like Gaudette this is played a lot at Christmas. Probably due to it's mentioning of the pagan Yule Green Willow. Huge Folk rock band that made some amazing tracks with songs/poems from all over Britain and Ireland. Many involved Folklore involving supernatural beings while others the plight of working folk especially women with no rights at all. Great musicians and Maddy Prior has a voice from beyond the vale

I think this is the band I've seen most live, at least a dozen times and I think the lineup changed at least half of those times which also led to style changes they ranged from very traditional folk to quite heavy folk rock. Love Maddy Priors voice. I don't think I've seen anyone react to Steeleye Span and I'm impressed with the wide range of bands you're covering.

Check out "Tam Lin" from their Liege and Lief album or if you like a challenge (from the same album) listen to the "Lark in the Morning" medley, it's an instrumental and the challenge is not to tap your feet or nod your head as you listen 😁 p.s. early congrats C&C the well deserved big 1k subs is just around the corner.

The song "All Around my Hat" is of nineteenth-century English origin. Most Irish tunes are copies of English, Scottish and Welsh folk songs.

@@TheRayhunt Well thats a nonsense statement for a start, most irish tunes are copies of english et al songs? Tri coloured ribbon is disputed, you are wrong just to assume its english just because the english said so. It does happen but when it does i think the irish sing the english songs better than the english do, Sam Hall by Flying column being proof in point.
@TheRayhunt
@TheRayhunt Жыл бұрын
@@macker33 The records in VWML show that a song with this chorus and broadly similar verses has been widely collected from English source singers from the late 19th century on. In the 19th century it featured in dozens of broadsheets and songbooks , going back to the 1830s. Peadar Kearney took the melody, changed the words, replaced 'green willow' with 'tricoloured ribbon' in the hat, and converted it into a song by 1916. He did the same with 'The Foggy Dew' - which originally was a song about a man meeting a young woman who told him she was destined to meet the man she would marry in the foggy dew.
@macker33
@macker33 Жыл бұрын
@@TheRayhunt The melody was around in ireland undreds of years before peader kearney ever got near it. No idea what the story with the foggy dew is. And vwml? seriously? if the cat had kittens the english would say they invented it.
