If you take your tag end of the mono after making you knot,pull it back through the egg it pulls your knot back into the hole in egg and looks cleaner of a finish

You are correct. It also gives you a cleaner straighter line coming out of the egg opposed to the knot. The way you said is the way the ve been doing it for years. This was one of my first videos almost ten years ago now. I was learning as I went with my video production and often missed simple steps like that in the video because of being nervous in front of the camera. That is for adding the tip.

What style of hook would that be called?

Hardway Outdoors that is a daiichi X510 hook. It is a very heavy wired hook which we use when fishing during the salmon runs. It's the only egg style hook we found can handle that large of fish

@@HolsingersFlyShopHi, when I started tying flys for our steelhead fishing I tied them on Mustad wide short shank hook in size 2 or 4 in the new fancy egg patterns. The Rangers at the time were not sure if the fly was even legal, but it sure caught fish if you could weigh it down enough for our fast flowing rivers. My best days fishing on that river (6am - 10am) was a 10lbs 8, 9lbs 3, 2 x 8 lbs and a 6lbs. That was just the ones I landed! I watched an angler next day catch his limit of twelve by lunch and he came back after lunch for his second helping (feeding a big family of locals!). All caught on a 8wt rod using the heaviest shooting head with a 2ft nylon leader! No finesse there. The bloke next to me had flown in from Hawaii as he did every year just to fish that river. Those days are gone, they have changed since Zane Grey put the river on the world map after writing his book The Anglers Eldorado. Cheers mate. Harera

could you use a fine silver or gold wire reverse wrapped over the mylar.

Yes you could it would help hold the Mylar in place. Usually I will just cover the Mylar with a little bit of Solarez Bone Dry

We are going up for the first time this year what time of month Is it good to catch steel head and salmon both?

Mark Romine October is best for the salmon. And you will get the male steelhead and browns will follow the salmon in to eat their eggs. November is better or the steelhead but the salmon are done

I can imagine the hookup percentage is low with that egg so close to hook

bakdrft2009 no just the opposite I've caught a ton of fish on this style of pattern. The hookup percentage is no problem because the bead is behind the hook and doesn't get in the way. I've caught trout is sizes ranging from wild stream bred browns to a 16 pound lake run brown. It catches fish.

Pretty fly but I would contend the steelhead don't give two hoots for the fly but are keying in on the trout bead. I bet if you just attached the bead to the hook as you do in this video and wrap the hook shank with red thread it will catch just as many steelhead. I use trout beads all the time with just a bare hook hanging about 2" below the bead and that set-up accounts for dozens of steelhead.
