@@jeffking291 The Dan are for people who take their music seriously because it moves them so much they desire to know everything about it, we are like great jazz lovers and really not to say anything derogatory about others but Steely Dan "lovers", are likely somewhat higher on the intelligence scale than most. It's music that goes deep and makes us think, as we dance into the sunset. Just a personal opinion after listening to them for the last 45 years. I bought 5 albums for my 12th birthday, Steely Dan - Countdown to Ecstasy, Hendrix - Axis Bold as Love, Bowie - Diamond Dogs, Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and Supertramp - Crime of the Century, to add to Sweden Baby James and Sgt Peppers and other great classics, man oh man, those were the days. Dr Why I guess I was a bit short with my comment. While Steely Dan is not my “ultimate favorite “, I do happen to like quite a lot of their music. I grew up in that era. We had a fearless Rock station that played all kinds of stuff.- and being it was an “ Album Rock “ station, they played far more than the “ hits”. I also like Jazz a lot. All sorts. As well as any “good “ music. So I wasn’t knocking them, just stating an “observation “. (( there are only a couple of songs I’m not crazy about, but it’s a “religious “ objection, and nothing more. Some quotes from Donald Fagen in regard to this song (from 2009): " "It's about that uneasy relationship between the patient and doctor. People put faith in doctors, yet they abuse their power and become dangerous." " If you read a drug connection into this song, you're on the right track. Fagen describes it as "kind-of a love-dope triangle," adding: "I think usually when we do songs of a romantic nature, one or more of the participants in the alliance will come under the influence of someone else or some other way of life and that will usually end up in either some sort of compromise or a split. In this song the girl meets somebody who leads another kind of life and she's attracted to it. Then she comes under the domination of someone else and that results in the ending of the relationship or some amending of the relationship. In 'Dr. Wu' that someone else is a dope habit, personified as Doctor Wu." - To confuse things even further: There IS (was) an, actual: "Dr. Wu" [Jing Nuan Wu] who founded a Taoiist clinic in 1973 (after being a venture capitalist on wall street!). He was an acupuncturist and artist who, in fact, helped one of the members of Steely Dan overcome a drug addiction, circa the mid-'70s [Hence: the lyrical tribute. 👍].

Very informative post, much appreciated! The lyrics, for me, find their most coherent form as metaphor when "katie" is the drug itself; I believe this is primarily a Becker composition, though I will entertain it as a Fagen take on a Becker issue (lol). In any case a wonderful, brilliant composition, only possible by Steely Dan, and Phil Woods' sax solo is sublime; the outro sax line is I think overlooked.

I love how much you've been diggin the Steely Dan vibe. There's just something about them that feels so good! A little something for all the Dan-heads on the thread - it blew my mind when I figured it out. What's up with the album cover of Katie Lied? It looks like a blurry photo of a grasshopper. It's not. Bright green (all-over) bush crickets are commonly known as... katydids. On the cover of Katie Lied... is a Katydid. That's how clever they are. I've been listening to them as long as I can remember and I'm still discovering new stuff in their songs. A little BTW as long as I'm talking. Jamel, the live version of Edgar Winter's Frankenstein is awesome as a novelty, but for the full effect of the mind-blowing artistry and composition - gotta check out the studio version. You're awesome, Jamel. Thanks for doing your thing for us.

Glad you figured it out! I thought this was common knowledge amongst the Dan Fans. The album title/cover pun also correlates with a line in the song "Doctor Wu": "Katy lies, you can see it in her eyes".
@duhman55544 жыл бұрын
Their lyrics are so dense that it like cutting away at a tree that never falls. This can be seen in the countless debates about Peg's lyrics. I've heard that it's about a blind bowler, a woman filming her first porno, etc. They tell these incredible stories and then throw in equally incredible instrumental parts to keep the story interesting, and the two feed off each other to create masterpieces. The only song by Dan that hasn't just completely blown me away is "Third World Man." There's just something about those two repeating chords in the beginning and throughout the rest of the song that totally loses me.
@liamsmom61773 жыл бұрын

My understanding of "Doctor Wu" is: Dr. Wu represents a real-life Doctor who helped Donald Fagen kick his drug/lifestyle problem. Fagen was extremely trustful and grateful to the Doctor for getting his Life turned around........until Fagen discovered that the good Doctor was having "relations" with his girlfriend aka. "Katy"........the song is so personal to Fagen that Steely Dan never performed it live........there's alot of deep personal pain in the lyrics.

Fagan is a musician and lyricist who writes fantastic short stories: bitter, sweet, dark, and innocent. And it's all wrapped in incredibly top notch music.

Wu wu wu! 100! On what you threw, great cadence on your breaks, great jabs on the asides. Timing on "Comment below!" Nailed it! Very wise.

Hey Jamel, love your reviews. That is a great interpretation of this song, I’ve listened to it for 40 years, and just assumed it was more of their abstract lyrics, but I think you’re right!

Thank you Jamel!! Your review on all the Dan compositions is awesome!! My favorite band of all time since 70s. Love the videos and your commentary (you have highlighted a few things I had not thought about) and your appreciation of this band. Love all your videos on various artists!! Keep up the good work brother!!

Danfans who bought the "Katy Lied" album in 1975 were two years ahead of the curve on "Doctor Wu" alto saxophonist Phil Woods. Most pop music fans wouldn't discover his genius until late 1977 with the release of Billy Joel's Grammy-winning hit single "Just the Way You Are." Sadly, Donald Fagen has been torturing his fans for nearly 30 years now by refusing to perform this gorgeous song in concert.

Being a fan of Steely Dan from the beginning, and a lover of jazz, I've been taking saxophone solos in their music for granted. Until several months ago, I shared this song on social media, and a friend pointed out the brilliance of Phil Woods on this one. Gives me a whole new appreciation for it. Yo, Jamel. Deacon Blues, bruh.

Trivia note... In The Eagles song Hotel California, the line about the “Steely Knives”...etc, was a tip of the hat to this band Steely Dan...from the history books, a post about the Hotel California songwriters... “There is a playful nod to the band Steely Dan in the song...see just below... The line "They stab it with their steely knives, but they just can't kill the beast," is a playful jab to rock band Steely Dan. Frey revealed in the liner notes of "The Very Best Of" that they alluded to the "Do it Again" rock band in "Hotel California" after Steely Dan made an Eagles reference in their song "Everything You Did."

Thanks for finally getting to this song, I've always dug it. I also enjoy your passion for this music, and as you can tell, there are many others that do. I got tickets for Steely Dan in June, if they lift these restrictions, would be my 8th time seeing them. Only time will tell. You have to check out Daddy don't live in that New York City, Royal Scam, Green Earrings, Gaucho, just to name a few. Should also give a Listen to "Cousin Dupree". Becker and Fagen were English majors, so they really know how to put a story to lyrics, coupled with their music writing, and a vast number of excellent musicians, equals success. Maybe you can do some Motown, some great music came out of there also. Thanks for what you do, got my wife checking your videos too, she really enjoys your reactions.
