I played guitar in a band for whom a minor chord was a giant challenge. I used add2 and 4ths constantly to build their sound because they could be layered onto their major and barre chords with little risk. It gave us a whole new sound, eventually working its way into the band’s writing.

That is a really interesting story actually and bears a lot of exploring, how you can add to existing simple chords without fear of it interfering like you say. Thanks for sharing

Very interesting and informative video. You keep talking about stacks of fourths... I'm so tempted to comment "so what"!

Haha! You gotta be hip to get that one! Most others would miss it by Miles!

Did Tim get these? (I had to think a little - we Southern men have to keep our heads)

Im a guitarist and guitar music composer and I really enjoyed your explanation about why we like the tension of the imperfections of life abstracted in music. I had similar thoughts about the many minor 2 and 9 chords in Flamenco. Nice to find someone with similar thoughts. Thank you for sharing.

Huge Brian Wilson fan! Love '60s garage and surf bands. Even I wrote a song with a G add 2/B thanks to Tim!

I'm laughing hearing you play around with these chords, hearing almost every Steely Dan song in them!

Your videos are invaluable. You are peerless in the music theory/ songwriting community on youtube. You look at things from really interesting angles that nobody else is seeing. Your videos are getting better by the week. Thanks so much for your efforts.

Led here by SD facebook group. Great video and like your musical musings. As someone who is still trying to get his head around jazz harmony this is very useful for me. Also - great singing voice.

I liked the video. May I suggest that in the start of the vid there is some aimless scrolling that could be cleaned up along with the mouse dancing around a bit too much? I have some experience, so see what you think. Content was terrific.

The verses in Southern Man (Neil Young) repeat mi11- mi 7 (although I suspect he didn't conceive it that way).

Loved the G add 2 / A add 2 thing. It's little things like this that make me reach for my guitar. Edit: Turns out that add 2 is kind of tricky on the guitar. Nines are way easier. Maybe there's a tuning that could facilitate add 2s? Also, stacked fourths is basically the standard guitar tuning EADGBE. :)

using just 1 stack of 4ths ..ie: A D G .(and moving bass note)..../G=Gadd9/or add2......./A=A11......./Bb=Bb6/7....../B=B7#5#9...../C=C6/9...../D=Dsus4..../Eb=Ebmaj7#11...../F=F6/9

Great video but just wanted to point out that as far as chord naming goes, you were incorrect with calling the A add2 "A9" every time the B is on top. It's still an A add2 whether the B was above or below. When naming chords, it's always assumed that every tension listed under the highest is included. So if you were to call it A9, then the 7th has to be included. If there's no 7th, then it's just A2 or A add2 whether the B was on top or on bottom.

Very informative video. Edgar Winter put out an album called jazzin the blues. The song keys to the kingdom off that album really had me scratching my head as far as the chords being used. Check it out if you get a chance. Thanks for your expertise!

add2 or add9 ..really 2 names for exactly same chord. and whether you call it 2 or 9..is by choice and has nothing to do with chord inversion, or note placement...albeit, very commonly confused
@TimSmolens3 күн бұрын
It is a bit of semantics but when I see add2, I am placing the added 2 in the lower part of the voicing.
