@@CuriousGeorge1111 Whilst I have heard some discussion of it describing a fash-ist (misspelled for our protection!) rally, it interests me that the lyrics likewise could be applied to arena-rocker musicians. Coincidence that Roger Waters also felt that "chain lightning" enough to write "In The Flesh"? 🤔

This track was a staple on their live tour, starting about 10 years ago. They turn it into a jam with keyboard & guitar solos, and add a smokin' hot horn arrangement. Hopefully Donald can stay healthy and they'll have a few more live tours. 13 piece band as tight as a drum, yet they really swing. Seen them 19 times. You need to experience Steely Dan first hand.

Always been one of my favorite SD songs. The solos are outstanding and as you alluded to, they always had the best musicians available and these guys were next level talented themselves so in their earlier years, it was mainly them on the records. That Donald on the Fender Rhodes and Denny Dias on the guitar solos.

You are mining more Steely gold! 😉 Your Gold Teeth a personal favorite, for it's sly sophistication, and smooth, funky, precise, bouncy groove. Some observations: I hear tell that this is the last song that The Dan composed as a band. That means future Doobie Skunk Baxter is in there. As I understand it, the song tells the tale of a grifter who has played her game too long. Now her tricks don't work anymore, and people are on to her machinations: "I have seen your iron and your brass [clockwork] Can't you see it shine behind the glass" Cathy Berberian was a famed singer, and some songs even she couldn't sing: the grifter has taken it too far, people are on to her, and she can't pull of her scam. Finally, 😁, "There ain't nothing in Chicago for a monkey woman to do." Is from Count Basie's "Goin' To Chicago Blues". Depending on who you as, a monkey woman is either overly sexually pleasing, or addicted to heroin---take your pick. Hope that brought a smile to a face. Thanks for another great reaction, guys--for me, they are comfort food. 🍲. Peace!

Hey guys. Looking forward to your take on more Don. I am with the commenters who are waiting for "Maxine" (Nightfly) by DF. It's deep, and so intricate - that David Letterman's "Late Show" band director/keyboard player Paul Shaffer could only play along for the first 30 seconds before he gave up in an interview with Don 2 or 3 years ago. Don said he had spent all of the first year of Covid writing more music. Hope we get to hear it soon. Keep it up. (Another DF to try... Title track from "Morph the Cat")

Becker and Fagen loved the Cotton Club and early blues. Midnight Cruiser tells of their love for that bygone era. The line "Their ain't nothing in Chicago for a monkey woman to do." is from some old blues song, by someone like Muddy Waters.

I love this track ! I have to admint that I was not so keen on it in 1973. I was not into either jazz or jazz/fusion back then. They easily could have put out a double album with this track taking up one whole side similar to what the Allman Brothers did on "Eat a Peach". They could have turned this into a 20+ minute "jam session".
