I'm in PNW and the rarity of conditions like this guy's posts is insane - maybe once a year if we're EXTREMELY lucky do we get bluebird + dry + powder. Usually only ONE of those three, and that is still rare. If it's a powder day, there's no blue sky, zero vis, freeways are shut down, or gets mega crowded and rained out. If it's a bluebird day or dry, it's thin/ice. NEVER have I seen all 3 together at a resort here - for this "once a year unicorn", drive 8 hours roundtrip and deal with all the pent up gang bangers forming massive lines - maybe get a shot at 1 already flattened line from all the freaks that sat in cars overnight. Alternative is: get a splitboard/backcountry training and head to avalanche terrain and cross your fingers....

kzbin.info/www/bejne/qKfToWpmoZ5gpZosi=xpee9H3Um2py-GCx Here's a video of me riding some steep icy moguls. But honestly no we don't really get that many moguls here, you need soft snow to be pushed around, and you'll get them in places with more frequent heavy snowfalls. When I worked in Canada you got them alot more, but you also got way more powder days that I would happily take!
@WaffleIron911Ай бұрын
@@malcolmmooreThe PNW is great! I've ridden here my whole 30 years. Whistler could be considered PNW, depends if the previous poster include Canada or just the USA. While we usually get a decent snowfall, our snow is a bit wetter and heavier (Cascade concrete as we like to call it) compared to the light and fluffy powder Colorado might receive. If you ever come back check out Mt. Baker, Mt. Bachelor or Timberline/Mt Hood. As an advanced rider, I appreciate all your videos even if it's stuff I already know. You make the explanations very simple and easy to understand and it helps me with teaching and understanding even more! Keep up the great vids!

This reminds me of one drill I've internalized that I believe I learned from you. The drill where you make the closed turn, and even turn up the hill a bit. Then just roll back on the heels or forward on the toes, and the carves happen so easily. So you're basically using gravity to do the work of the carve.

This was a nice video. I have trouple on a Green slope due to the crazy steep start to it, shouldnt be a green slope imo.. but keeping all of this straight as a newbie is quite a lot: How and where to lean and keeping weight here and there. Leaning over the front of the board so the edges grip for the turn starts then let off to complete the turn. And then weave around the annoying skiier lol In Minnesota, where I live, we have bluffs, not mountains, so it is very hard to get more then 90 seconds per run in to practice, then its 5 minutes at least back up to the top.

Thanks, Malcolm! Through your videos, my skiing skills have greatly improved. I can now change edges on steep slopes and carve on appropriately sloped areas. Your courses have given me a better understanding of the overall system of skiing. I watched your series of videos again, including open/close door, twisting the board, short turns, and edge changes. I've found that I have a question that has remained unanswered: Is it true that you cannot twist the board while carving? Specifically, in slightly sloped areas, I can quickly turn by twisting the board but struggle to enter carving quickly to achieve pencil lines. In such situations, is it only possible to carve by leaning my body so both legs exert equal force? Sorry for using translation software; my expression may not be very accurate.

That's again very well explained and understandable but somehow everything after the edge change is not yet working for me and I am into a lot of skidding. How important are good edges (service) of the board. I am still skidding down the "fall line" on hard pists instead of traversing. And I am always distracted by all the other people around me and afraid to hit someone. But your videos already helped me a lot recognising bad habits and trying to change them. Thanks 👍

Hi Malcom, on this kind of slopes don’t you use the “pedal tecnique” or to anticipate the turns with the upper part of body?
@malcolmmoore16 күн бұрын
Yeah, pedalling is essentially the same thing as knee steering, however I don't like the term pedalling as it encourages people to push down their feet and lift up their toes, and whilst your feet do roll over, the movement is passive, and a result of your COM passing over the top. When you lead in with your front knee and hip it creates an upper body rotation, or what some people like to call anticipating the turn, yes..it's all linked 👍

Hey! Great video, Can I ask one question? Is the perpendicular part of the "S" - the traverse - really perpendicular or is it still going a bit down? I have this problem that when I make my turns, if I finish them early (not go fully 90 degrees) it works out great BUT on steep slopes I feel I'm not losing enough speed and I would want to turn later. If I'm perpendicular though, I have a problem with going to my toes or heels, I feel as if there is a bit of force down (the slope want me to be 45 degrees let's say) and due to this I can catch the edge and fall... Your advice would be greatly appreciated!
@nvoitekАй бұрын
Ok, I think I found an answer in your other video, it's like in falling leaf, after you go 90 degrees you start the turn with your front leg, so that the front of the board catches the other edge, you don't just tilt backwards or forward with your whole body because that's how I catch the edge and fall. When I started carving I forgot about torsion and that you can control your feet independently. Damn, you were right it's an essential video

How much does the sidecut radius matter when doing these kind of carved turns? For example the Korua transition finder wich has a larger radious at the rear that pulls your more down the hill, compared the Stranda shorty wich has a smaler radius at the rear and will allow you to easier pull across or upp the the hill.

Love the videos! Would you recommend to wear wrist guards, because I heared that they can actually cause more harm than good?
@insulin801Ай бұрын
Never break your fall with your hands on snow. Wrist guards might protect you, but they also may just move the fracture point from your wrists up to your forearms. Start practicing falling with your arms tucked in. Seriously, fall on purpose and un-learn the instinct to brace the fall with your hands.
@fabes326Ай бұрын
@@insulin801agree with not breaking your fall with your hands. It’s a lot easier to break your wrist than your arm. Adding wrist guards will be extra protection to the wrist. If you are wearing wrist guards and that’s the so called reason you break your arm, there is a very high probability that you would have broken your wrist without wearing guards. Pick your poison. I would personally wear the wrist guards while first learning to ride, than not wearing any. But yes, don’t try to break your fall with your hands.

@@lennartdanneels5566 if you are just learnknf to board. I would recommend using impact shorts (demon makes nice ones). Elbow and knee pads, POC mountain bike pads are very nice, comfortable, and don’t restrict any movement. If you do get wrist guards, don’t get the really big bulky ones that looks like you are wearing a robotic arm. You will have a hard time putting gloves/mittens over them. When I started out (older age) I rocked that stuff and still do. Easily saved my body and allowed me to do 4 full strait days of lessons. Just a little sore from using muscles that I haven’t used in a very long time, hot tub cured that. Just my opinion.

Remove as much of the traverse as malc says. If you can’t make a turn in that space because it’s too crowded, I guess you’re side slippin’, pointing it until a section you can get a turn in, or waiting ….
@danhentes8569Ай бұрын
as lennie13 said, the best thing you can do if you are still a beginner and dont master the turns well is to avoid an accident (caused by you or not). so, if it is way too crowded, either you wait, either just slide slowly untill you pass the difficult area.

Hi, Is there a time the board is flat based? It seems going from edge to edge.

Can you tell me what is the exact place your at and what is the date of the recording? I'm going to Switzerland soon and wonder about conditions

In Saas Fee but in November! I reckon conditions there are good though ATM!

I wish I had steep groomers like where you're are. I'm usually dealing with some skier made moguls on the steep trails

Are these ‘step on’ bindings or other kinds of bindings?

Side note on the audio: are you using builtin camera microphone? There's something unplesant in the audio, I think it's the wind noise cancellation adding distorions to your voice. Also board sound is bit too loud and it sounds like you would be riding deeply frozen, packed snow. Peace.
@malcolmmooreАй бұрын
I had to filter the audio a bit because the slope was pretty icy, so yeah, that icy noise is exactly that, an icy noise! It's hard to get the balance sometimes between removing as much unwanted noise without affecting my voice too much.

Are you filming in the 8k 30fps mode, or 5.7k 60fps mode? Kind of undecided which mode to shoot in, 60fps gives you a little more wiggle room for slo-mo shots but at the same quality as the X3.
@malcolmmooreАй бұрын
30fps so I get the better overall image quality! I know for these tutorials I'm not going to slow it down so I go for that instead.

I never know what to do with my back foot since everything happens with my front foot and my center of gravity.. Are you making any movements with the back foot or is it just there for the ride?
@malcolmmooreАй бұрын
It works too, most people need to focus more on the front foot but the back foot is very important too. Check out the knee steering videos that I link up in the video description for more info on what it does!

is this footage from the most recent snowfall in the Alps?
@RuizhiYangАй бұрын
The snow line seems to be November or very early December. I was there around then and it was similar to the video
@malcolmmooreАй бұрын
Yeah this was filmed in mid November when I was in Switzerland, my previous videos were filmed more recently, I just happened to hold this one back for a little bit. I prefer to release more beginner videos early on and get onto more technical stuff as the season progresses!
@debbieelliott9982Ай бұрын
I just came across your videos, and love the way you explain things. Can't wait to get out and try your tips. I rode a gully for my first time last season, and absolutely loved it. The challenge I had was in maintaining where the horizon line was (not sure if I'm using correct terminology). The transitions between heel and toe-side turns were so quick, it was hard to maintain perspective of heading down the gully, while simultaneously heading down the side of a turn. I have been unable to find any information instructing how to ride a gully. Am I the only one with this problem? If not, could a video please be made on this? Thanks!

I'm gonna try and get this one done this season!

@@malcolmmoorethank you so much! I posed my question on a women’s Facebook snowboarding page and was unable to get a response (there are many instructors on that page) and also asked another social media snowboard instructor, to which I got no response.

How do you deal with steep slope full of moguls
@oferevoz2712Ай бұрын
Only snowboarder in Switzerland. Not even 1 passed in your whole movie
@evanjohnson1740Ай бұрын
Malcom, you post excelent information and technical advice. The only qualm I have is 1. resorts in the PNW dont have slopes like carpet so variable/chop/moguls are much more feequent and 2. crowds are real and you cant take an entire piste to yourself unless its not busy. I think you should post about pivot turns in steeps as people like tommy bennet speak about using these in America where most slopes are not above alpine line with limited real estate. I get why you preach the basics to folks who cant actually carve and rely on skidded turns to make it down the hill. Keep up the comtent, but keep reality involed at times mate 😉👍
@malcolmmooreАй бұрын
The thumbnail says 'Groomed Slopes' and I still manage to offend! Anyway can someone tell me what these PNW resorts are? My memory of riding there was awesome conditions with loads of snow, but maybe I was spoilt and had a lucky season, it seemed like a powder day every week! Lots of fresh snow does of course lead to a bigger and faster build up of moguls and bumps, as all of that snow gets moved around so easily, however I would definitely take that over the hard and icy snow that we often get, caused by dry periods that can easily last a month. Anyway, I'm riding the conditions that I have and making my videos there!
