What do I want to do when I grow up - same answer as when I was 4 - I want to be an artist. My dad did not call me stupid, however, he said, you only make money after you have died, when you are an artist. Still, to this day, even after painting for years, this stupid thought gets into my head. Not as much as before. But thank you because I have a wonderful gallery a five minute walk from me, and I know the owners, I will go speak with Ms. Stremmel on Monday.

Thanks! I have a small gallery in Saint Paul Minnesota that is just one year old and I have gone back to the drawing board recently after working with some of the most challenging, ill prepared, mediocre artists who don’t want to be coached but can’t figure out why they don’t sell. I said yes to everyone and I ended up with a bunch of art that wasn’t ready to sell, wasn’t inspiring. Basically, I needed coaching too. 🙂

It's so true that Americans believe art is not a viable career- but look at Europe or Mexico- they have such love for their aspiring artists- watch Landscape Artist of the Year and see all the extra ppl that show up just to paint- it's AMAZING- what a supportive community

I have that exact core wound (being told at a young age that I couldn’t be an artist) - and I’m STILL healing/overcoming it. I hung in a gallery that had a hodgepodge of works by local artists, but the gallery is no longer in business, and...I’m not aware of a gallery here in Vegas that represents works with a style as primitive/crude as mine. But I would love to have a gallery see the art in what I do...and sell it! You mentioned an artist who’s husband represents her work, are there people (like agents/managers) that sell for artists or get them into shows and galleries? 🦋💕

I live on the island of St. Thomas and we have 1 art gallery. When I approached the owner she said she only displays “investment art” lol

Stefan is 100% correct. I walk in the gallery (co-op) and I see the same paintings they had months ago and I think to myself. "These people suck at selling paintings". I then proceed to pick the brains of whatever artist (usually female) is manning the desk. then later, the overweight lesbian artist with a crew cut and horn rimmed glass's comes in (I think this chick has a GPS monitor on me) and she tries to save the female artist at the desk from me, the big scary guy "who must be up to no good" if he is talking art with the cute female artist behind the desk...That is my usual visit to the Gallery. lol....(I am a street, watercolor artist. Hard, sweaty work)...Only time my stuff has been in a Gallery is if the Gallery owner come up to me on the street and buys my paintings which has happened several times.

Hi Stefan, this video was very interesting. Does the size of your painting matter while displaying in a gallery? Also, do we show them a photograph of our painting when showing them a sample?

If the artist is already good at marketing then what does the artist need the gallery for? Marketing is the gallery's only selling point.

Do you have a strongly-held opinion on painting under a pseudonym? It makes marketing difficult, but I'm not painting for commercial reasons. I'm an architect who has spent the last 35-plus years developing my professional and business reputation, and I have serious misgivings conflating that hard-earned reputation with developing an artist reputation unrelated to my craft. I charge a great deal of money for my signature on building projects, and that "same name" on fine art in this Age of Google is disconcerting. As a result I feel inhibited... My name is unique-enough that any comptent Google-search will spit-out my professional life and contact info. In fact by-law it's public knowledge as l'm state-licensed so it's on the online public record. But it shouldn't have a bearing on "...is it a good still-like?", marine-scape, ...or a more outre topic. Or the reverse.
@MelanieMaguire3 жыл бұрын
I think (like singers/writers etc) you can paint under any pseudonym you like. Banksy - nobody knows what his real name is. There are plenty of instances from art history where the artist used a different name for his artwork. Unfortunately I can't remember who! Good luck!

I wish people that post videos to can a wider audience and potential customers by phone etc would not make snide comments about "people trying to get things for free by youtube" and put down people who come to watch. I considered heavily flying to a plein air event as I saw the name here and Im not a plein air painter and waffled back and forth as in 3 months asked like 10 questions here, never a response. I also asked if there was a patreon so I could pay monthly as I don't live close for classes. Im disappointed I waited 2 weeks to see a new video and planned on using the phone service, to hear snide remarks about youtube watchers. do you offer online live classes like many in GoToMeeting or skype? No. I bet many would be students would take live classes. But if you shame us for being watchers as we don't live close- that hurts to be honest.

Stephan Baumann needs to do something about the Echo's in his studio (or Class Room) the Echo Blurrs his Voice terribly on the web. Hard to understand regardless of volume. I just want to leave because of the Echo preventing me from listening to something I really want to hear.

My local gallery only juries in once a year, in August and usually only take 1 or 2 new artists out of an average of 30 or so who apply. I applied a few years back.... they told me I made it to the final table.. top 3-5 but didn't get in. In fairness, realistically, I wasn't ready yet. I was planning to apply again this past year but August turned out to be a very busy month and I just didn't have the time.
