@@StefanGotteswinter Regarding streaming, as you said yourself: It is not detracting from your usual content, so what is there to lose? It's enough that 0.1% of your audience will tune it to listen to you, even if all you end up doing is randomly mumbling, and you interact with 100 people, so give it a try, you can always stop or make changes later. Regarding a schedule, I think like 16:00 CET on Saturdays is the best time for international streamers. You catch the Americans at breakfast, The Europeans waking up from their nap, and the Asians/Australians late night on a Saturday when they can stay up late. :)

Hi Stefan. Seeing you clean the lens at the start of the video made me think of something: more than most people who use cameras, you understand abrasion and surface finishing. I've always seen camera people cleaning lenses and wondering how much they are scratching the surface when they wipe. I know it falls outside of machining, but it could make an interesting subject for a video.
@StefanGotteswinter
@StefanGotteswinter Жыл бұрын
What I did there in the beginning of the video, I would never do to a dirty lens, 100% guarantee to scratch it :D Cleaning of parts and tools is an incredible wide topic, good idea, I might do something on it.
@markstorey4243
@markstorey4243 Жыл бұрын
That would be great. I realize most people here are interested in metal and plastic, but that particular subject does interest me. I work in the film industry and I've seen camera assistants wiping lenses (with some care) worth tens of thousands of dollars and wondered if they were really damaging those lenses.

Hi Stefan yes congratulations on 100K. I hope you don't get too consumed by these counters though. Mr. Pete complains about his views but I think he forgets that he is emulated by dozens of other youtubers and offers very special introductory material and historical (US anyway) perspective. Like Robin R. and Paul Sellers you offer a pretty unique take on the machining (well Paul is woodworking with a smattering of steel) world and just because your parts tend to be finger sized or smaller doesn't mean those of us working with wiggly consumer machines making parts for tractors can't adapt your ideas to our applications. I also really appreciate German approaches to things that are just different than the way things are done in NA. Live stream would be fun but I usually miss these and have to enjoy them after the fact anyway but by now you have some hard core groupies that will follow you anywhere anytime so go for it. I seem to be always interested in sharpening, resharpening, and making and grinding tools so hopefully a few shop projects that include cutting tools will continue to be included in the future. Anyway I really appreciate you taking us along on your journey. All the best. Gambatte Kudasai!

Congrats on the channel milestone! Regarding the inserted drill: I've been curious why I haven't seen them used much in youtube shops. I think Kurtis (CCE) is the only other person I've seen use them in a non-CNC application. When I used to work in a very large industrial steel shop (circa 2006), our tooling company put us on to them. At the time we were using twist drills with a braised/ground carbide tip and these new inserted drills were advertised as a cheaper solution (more $$ for the drill body, but less $$ in inserts over time). We were running them on ~2 cubic meter 3-axis CNC Mazaks. I don't recall the RPM, but the vertical feed rates we got was much better than the braised tools. We were pushing a 20mm drill through mild steel at over 650mm/min.

One feature all of the u-drills we have at work is you can offset them in X to drill a larger hole. The Kennametal and Sandvik drills we have often have either a range or maximum size etched on them. I've also never had luck boring with them, but drilling bigger has saved me a couple roughing passes and it's usually not louder than drilling on size. I *have* been startled by the coins hitting the window of the machine before, though.

Congrats! Without good content it would not have been possible. After finding your channel I've looked up much of your older content too! I've loved how much I've leaned from them. Telling why you do things you do is so valuable to me. Do I want professional quality of video, editing, audio and audio editing? I like it, but the content is more important. I'll rather learn something from lesser quality video than watch a pro film I learn nothing. I think one magic of tool building is that is it fundamentally problem solving. You need to do something where you need a tool to do that. Making one solves the problem. Same thing in customizing equipment but in smaller scale. Sure, youtube is full of hacks (with owful results) but your tools are not hacks but thought to the end making good results. Love to see those too!

When you use that Indexable drill in your Emco lathe and Multifix holder you can connect coolant to the rear end of the drill. I use pvc piping and quick couplings normally used for compressed air. Lathe coolant pump would do great. Maybe coolant mist with compressed air would work, but i have not tryed that. Never can have enaugh attachments on Deckel (Euromill how it is called in US). Many thanks for your great channel and content. I am your subscriber from the early days, also on Blondiehacks, Abom and Cutting edge eng. All the best.

7:14 Hydraulic! Then you can get into "hydraulic competition" with Cutting Edge 🙂 48:20 it is good when your machine does not have super high torque, and you can run them at much higher rpm than a twist drill. Air through the coolant holes on the lathe is easy to make and might help to remove chips and cool a little.

2 stories on insert drills and lathes , for a while mori seiki installed large laminated glass windows on their lathes. a huge upgrade on the various plastic windows . then insert drills became almost overnight ,the drill of choice that pushed out disk would fly out at high speed and hit the edge of the inner glass and the whole window would would crumble as safety glass does. Soon after that , the factory shortened the glass and placed a steel plate to stop the impacts on the sheet metal of the door. Second ,we installed a lathe at a stainless steel specialist ,with optional high pressure coolant (1000psi /69MPa). unfortunatly the transfer pump from the coolant resevoir to the HP pump resevoir was undersized, resulting on a momentary stop in coolant delivery. With a hight pressure and high volume flow a hole could be drilled very fast .Without the cutting and clearing effect of the coolant ,the drill died an instant horrible death. oops🙄

You did say many years ago if you were stranded on an Island and could only take one machine tool it was a Deckel with all the accessories! Your getting there one air BnB road trip at a time! I now officially want one 🤣 The micro drilling attachment is brilliant. These shop talk videos you do from time to time are very interesting and informative. A gas spring for the bandsaw feed mechanism would be a good cheap way to do it. They have a fairly consistent spring force through their travel and can be sourced with internal hydraulic damping. You would just need a latch of some kind to hold the table it in the compressed state to load stock on the saw, same as you would need for a gravity fed table. You can get gas struts that have an adjustable pressure as well, just let the gas out until it feels right. The only think I would think a gravity feed system is you have more control over the feed pressure by just throwing more or less scrap metal in the counterweight bucket, but otherwise a gas spring would be simpler and more compact. Congrats on the 100k!

I believe that the palmgren table was made for a drill press. I think that there were situations where a shop did not want to tie up a mill for certain drilling operations and the palmgren table was a middle ground. It would allow for semi-accurate bolt circle drilling without layout.

I think a livestream as you described it would be something approaching a Q&A. Doing a regular installment of Q&A would be an easier task as a livestream, since you wouldn't have to prepare any questions and so on. But I think more people could be involved when it was a video, due to timezones, as you mendtioned. Maybe a good compromise could be to do a livestream, so the people can enjoy it live, but also watch it on-demand afterwards, like WAN Show on LTT. You could also ask the viewers who didn't get tocwatch it live to leave questions for the next livestream, so they'd be more involved, rather than just missing it (mostly). My last idea on this is that you could schedule the streams for a different time each stream (within reason) so everyone could enjoy you live every once in a while. These are just my two cents of ideas, and are to be handled as food for thought, not to push you in any direction. Keep up the great content, I learn something new on every single video of yours!!❤
