This circuit that can indicate the water level (Or any other conducting liquid) in a tank.. The circuit is made by five BC337 transistors, five LEDs, five 330 ohm Resistors and one Buzzer.
Here we are using transistor as a Switch. Initially there is no voltage applied to the base of the transistor and the transistor is in OFF state (no current is flowing through collector and emitter) and LED is OFF. When the water level reaches to electrode in the tank, the positive side of the battery gets connected to the base of the Transistor through the water. So when a positive voltage has been applied to the base of the transistor, it gets into ON state and current starts flowing from collector to emitter. And LED turn ON.
* I recommend using stainless steel electrodes to prevent oxidation of them by the electrolysis phenomenon.
After trying the excellent service offered by JLCPCB I recommend it, the quality of the circuits is high, customer service is always available and professional, the time of realization is short and the delivery of PCBs is by express courier.
JLCPCB is a great place to get hight quality custom circuit boards at an extremely low price, you can buy 5 PCB Boards (Any Color) for 2$

sensor wires will electrolyse due to dc current flow, common wire should be AC coupled by using a square wave and a series capacitor. this ''improvement'' is not my own but common knoledge from magazine projects like this in the 60's and 70's. (yeah i'm old)

Yes lez briddon, you're right, the exposed wire ends do corrode on DC power. So AC electricity would be preferable. This corrosion also appears on the cheap moisture meters, because the copper traces corrode very fast in continous operation. Maybe more expensive materials like gold or titan would slow down that process, but alternatin current would still be preferable to slow down the occuring oxidation of the material.

People have already commented on the electrolysis but you could also keep exactly the same circuit and use reed switches on the outside of the container, vertically in a line and then inside the container, have a tube in which there's a magnet glued to a float. This will work in any liquid.

Nice and simple idea. Maybe for the next version you use a ultrasonic distance sensor. Water is a really good reflector, so the readings are accurate, so you can add a display with exact value and it can´t corrode. There so many things you could improve with that version. You could add a button, that wakes up the microcontroller from deepsleep for a minute. In that case you can run it for a very long time on a small battery.

This is a really bad design. First of all, water is not conductive. Impurities in the water like metal ions will make it slightly conductive, but the resistance is so high that this circuit will not work with most tap water, because it relies on NPN transistors. NPN transistors require current to activate, and the highly resistive water will limit the current below the transistor's threshold. You could mitigate this somewhat by using MOSFETs, but that still wouldn't fix the problem.

I’ve made the exact circuit before. But what I have found, which isn’t a terrible problem, is your positive voltage from your electrode at the bottom, once that connects to any of your base pins, you have started an electrolysis process, if you look close to your base pin wires, you will see small bubbles forming and possible start to float, this is hydrogen being generated and your wires will eventually get corrosion build up and inaccurately read your water level, and or dissolve completely. What I did to correct this problem was to have a ground at the bottom of the tank rather than positive voltage. Then used XOR logic gates to detect that ground once the water level rises. Therefore no positive voltage is in your tank, no hydrogen is produced, and your wires won’t corrode. But. Over all good job. Jlpcb is a great place for boards. Keep going. Try using logic gates. Or a base to ground driven transistor.

If you designed this for pure water, it won't work, there has to be some impurities in the water to conduct electricity. Tap water is okay, it has the impurities. Also won't work as a gasoline level circuit for the exact same reason, gas doesn't conduct electricity. And use copper for the electrodes. I have used this idea for decades now and it works fine. Another issue, if you are going to use this and there is any chance of the electrodes (sensors) contacting each other, use a current control resister both in the power supply line to the sensors AND in the line connecting to the base of each transistor.That way IF anything shorts, the circuit will not short the power supply and burn the circuit up. Just a thought!
@Stefano91ste
@Stefano91ste 5 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for the advice, the circuit is mostly designed for educational use. Copper oxidizes too quickly, better than stainless steel or gold-plated contacts.

So simple.. Beautiful! It won't work with distilated water))) Electrodes simple to wash, it could be stainless, it could be different lenght. We use it everywhere. But we allways need relay output (simple or solid state relay) to control valves, emergency lamps or pumps. What about work with liquids with different resistance wastewater or pure water (near distilated)? Maybe use some potentiometer (in some controllers we could see few switches to chose resistanse of liquid).. Or much higher voltage but use short pulse. What you (or anybody) think about that.. P.S. somebody offer to use pressure sensor to control tank liquid level. What you think about that? I think, that is expensive. I can't visualize how change or clean pressure sensor in tank with wastewater))) Liquid sometimes not only liquid)))
@Stefano91ste
@Stefano91ste 5 жыл бұрын
Hi, Thanks a lot! With waste water or anyway not pure it works the same, perhaps with salt water there would be too much conductivity.. We must experiment:) Regarding the pressure sensor I think it can be very convenient, but in that case you would need a more complex circuit and managed by a microprocessor like Arduino.. it would all be more expensive and complicated. Then it also depends on where you want to install it and for what purposes. Let's say that using a pressure sensor you would get a completely different circuit, which would nullify the educational purpose of this video .. ie create something wonderful with very few common components :)

Just in my perspective. Its not practical to have a buzzer coz not all the time this a person who will hear it and shut the pump/line of. Instead you'll probably need a cut off or limit switch when it reaches the limit and start when in low. Just my opinion. Its good to have a water level indicator just add a high/low limit cut off/start. Thanks ive learn alot from your vids.,😊

agree, in scope of bigger water tank (even not too big, as it's on video thumbnail) it's technically too complicated, too many wires to too many sensors on walls of a tank. Great video. Wanting to replicate the project, I wanted to know two things: the first if the card can feed it at 12 volts dc, the second if in place of the buzzer I can mount a 12 volt DC relay. Thank you.

Hi, thank you :) 1) No, Max 5Volts DC 2) It could only be done by adding a power transistor, as it is the circuit is not able to drive a relay

It would be a good idea to add a base resistor to each transistor. What do you think?
@Stefano91ste
@Stefano91ste 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jakub - it's a good idea, as long as you use this circuit for normal tap water you don't need the resistors at the base, but if you want to use it for much more conductive liquids (for example salt water) a resistor at the base of each transistor would be perfect !

Okay 👌🏽, this is great. Btw did you check this one with actual water tank. I have checked, with the distance it’s not working. Normally we are using overhead water tank. We have to place this unit alt least in near the water supply value. So distance between water sensor and circuit aprox. 15m. I think current is not enough for this distance. Any surjections ?

Will the alarm remain uninterrupted when the level is top?
@Stefano91ste
@Stefano91ste 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, because the red LED is thought of as an alarm state, meaning that the water must never reach that level, and if it reaches it it must be lowered. however being outside the pcb, a switch can be placed between the pcb and the buzzer for turn off it.
