Pruning of Fall Raspberries is Best done in Spring to give canes a full season to grow and are harvested in Fall. They are also called fall bearing raspberries or Primocane since they produce the same year as they grow. I no longer grow summer bearing raspberries (floricane raspberries) since having discovered fall bearing raspberries. Which type do you grow?

I'm in Wisconsin. Because of SWD I grow summer fruiting raspberries (Killarney, Royalty, Jewel and K-81-6). I cut the floricanes down to the ground right after cropping or harvest, reduce the green canes down to the 4-6 strongest, tie the green canes to the wire in a fan shape and I'm good to go, just like Monty Don thought me.

We grow both summer and fall raspberries on the border of our small backyard. The summer variant I have moved a bit to pots and otherwise they grow in the front row before the fall variant. What I did last year is twirled some hemp ropes over the fall raspberries to hold them upright as much as possible, and not too stiff so they do not break with violent winds (rarity). That worked out great! Without it they will hang forward due to the weight of the fruit.

Thanks for the great video. I'm still thinking on what fruit shrubs to plant between my trees, so no pruning here (yet). In our place, spring is also very early this year (last week 18° C). 5 cherry trees already in full bloom. This weekend though, there's frost predicted. It's realy stressing when the seasons get hustled up like that. And to say that I'm still the lucky one with my permaculture orchard, only 5 of the 180 trees at risk. A local conventional orchardist came on the news because all 9000 of his pear trees are already in bloom.

Fall bearing raspberries produce twice, so why not keep the canes and get the summer harvest on last year's canes?

Definitely a pain when knowing which kind of raspberry(s) you have - and when to cut primo canes or secondary cane species. Make it easy - whack them all down - and all new bearing canes pop up !

Thanks for the tips, I missed kind of the argumentation behind cutting them down. Will these second year canes not fruit? I've just pruned mine in half and they have already leaved out so I'm going to leave them be for now.
@StefanSobkowiak

Yes they will produce fruit on second year canes but it takes away energy from that falls crop. Leave some and try.

Great tips, but I’m overrun by raspberries throughout the pasture. I want to know how to eliminate them where they’re undesirable. (And I don’t have enough pasture for goats or sheep) I know I can pay someone to bring their goats but it’s too expensive
@StefanSobkowiak
@StefanSobkowiak 2 жыл бұрын
Roll them or mow them regularly (as goats would) that will exhaust the roots in 2 years.
