Steffi had the aura when she was playing like nobody has. Even if she always against publicity, she was the most favorite sports lady for majorities, not only in Germany, she has had millions of fans in India, China, other Asia, Europe and even in the US countries . She is still in the hearts of her zillions of fans.

Those were the days of true sportmanship, spirit to compete without animosity and rivalry without bitterness among Steffi Graf, Seles, Arantxa, Mary Pierce, Novotna, Fernandez etc. Winning a grand slam was very tough in those days and winning all four majors in a calendar year was almost impossible, but still Steffi managed it in 1988! If Sanchez forehand was more dangerous she had won Wimbledon, but she won every grand slam, when it's was not in single, she won it in doubles or mix. Vaaaaaamooooos Arancha!

They were both playing so we'll. Good stuff there and at 5 all final set at Wimbledon. Doesn't get much better.

Hands down the most intense game ever played in a ladie’s Wimbledon final. I wish Arantxa had taken this one home but luck was on Graf’s side that day.

bullcrap it was due to skill and a well earned victory, Credit also to Sanchez Vicario who put up a hard fought challenge befitting of her number two seed.

It's amazing that Graf won 22 slams with a slice backhand! Her forehand definitely the best shot ever in women's tennis...

Serena got 23 without stabbing her competition. Steffi would at best get 18 if Seles wasn't stabbed.

@Illya Kuryakin Venus always wilted against her sister. How many slams did Serena win when she beat Venus in the finals? What sibling rivalry? Venus was weak mentally when she faced Serena in big matches.

I really wish Arantxa had won the game after such an effort. At the same time both played incredibly and Steffi played well to win. After this match the UK audience sort of became Arantxa's home crowd till the end of her career, fantastic!

Well said! Everyone was against Graf especially the media. Anyone who stood up against Graf would be crowd favorite. Graf took the unfair situation silently. She worked herself to so many Grand Slam titles ... before the England crowd gave her the respect she truly deserved. The Hingis idiocy proved that. In the end, Graf became the greatest female tennis legend, even Serena could never surpass.

FloridaIndependent lol that was not my intention. Actually I was trying to say how well Arantxa was up to the test and fought till the end to win the crowds with would support her till the end. I was saying this because there was a time when Spanish players were hated and dismissed after Seles' comeback. The same applied to Graf but she handled it well by her winning. Arantxa, meanwhile, had to wait until 1998 FO to prove herself and regain her popularity (Martinez did not; she was not strong enough). In the end both Arantxa and Steffi endured criticism but overcame as champions.
